The Collings DS is the original 12-fret dreadnought shape, first designed as an oversized Hawaiian guitar almost a century ago. Collings retained the body shape and wide neck with slotted headstock from that bygone era, but their DS models are thoroughly modern guitars with a unique sound all their own.
The longer body, with the bridge closer to the center of the lower bout, delivers an open, airy tone with smoothness and warmth not typically found in modern, 14-fret dreadnoughts. Whether flatpicked or played fingerstyle, these guitars have lots of headroom and the wide dynamic range invites everything from mellow accompaniment to biting leads.
This particular DS2H features an Adirondack Spruce top and Rosewood back and sides. Rosewood is a tonewood known for its warmth, well balanced tone, and visual beauty. When combined with Adirondack Spruce on the top, the guitar has plenty power and headroom for dynamic playing styles, yet is very suited to fingerstyle playing due to the slope shoulder body style. The Rosewood provides a deep, rich low end that is clear and powerful, without overpowering the smooth, shimmering highs.
Also custom on this guitar, is a hand-rubbed varnish finish. The varnish process takes a lot more time, both in application and drying, and is certainly not conducive to volume production. The difference in tone, however, makes the process worth the trouble. The varnish creates a faster response with warmer trebles and a greater overall dynamic range. The low end is amplified while maintaining stunning clarity and definition.
Further custom appointments on this Collings include Adirondack Bracing, offering a more efficient transfer of string energy to the top, since Adirondack is much stiffer than the standard Sitka braces. This allows for a more responsive and powerful sound board. Add to the mix a sunburst finish, torch inlay, and a 1 3/4" nut width, you have a truly custom guitar that instantly sets itself apart from other slope shouldered dreadnoughts... in playability, looks, and most importantly... the sound.
