The Santa Cruz Firefly concept: Current technology has allowed artists to lay down tracks from remote locations creating a need for a sophisticated guitar that travels well and still delivers a professional performance. Santa Cruz has accomplished just that and much more with the Firefly!
The smallest guitar in our shop, the sound that comes out of this small Santa Cruz is much larger than expected out of any small-bodied guitar. A gorgeous cedar top provides ample warmth and quick response that is especially nice when played fingerstyle and is rich and clear when played with a pick as well. The sound is full, loud, and lively with an amazing clarity and definition from string to string. This firefly definitely processes the Santa Cruz balance, thanks to Richard Hoover masterfully tap-tuning each cedar top to match the tonal characteristics of each body cavity. Richard also varies the top's thickness, from thin at the edge to slightly thicker at the middle, to make it respond with more volume and air, much like a speaker cone.
The Firefly features a 24" scale length, a full inch and a half shorter than Santa Cruz dreadnought guitars, and 14 frets to the body. The standard and familiar 1 11/16" nut width makes the guitar comfortable to play, as opposed to the thin necks of many small-bodied guitars. This makes playing the Firefly much more similar to standard sized guitars without significantly adapting your style.
This firefly has a few finish scratches on the top of the guitar in the pickguard area and on the back of the guitar. There are some dings and scratches on the lower edge of the soundhole, which we photographed but is difficult to see. There is an approx. 3/8" scratch in the wood just beneath the pickguard as shown in the photo and very slight fretwear in the first position.
