2011 Santa Cruz D/PW Custom Old Growth Sitka Spruce and Mahogany Custom

Though it began life as a Santa Cruz D/PW-M, this custom instrument was customized almost beyond recognition, making it a truly unique and special Santa Cruz.  The topwood is constructed using a set of old growth Sitka Spruce, carefully selected by Richard Hoover himself.   The secret to the desirable tone of vintage instruments lies in aged wood (crystallized resins) and the relaxation of tensions built in during manufacturing. It's not just the species of wood - but the era in which it grew and was cut, and the method in which you build it.

This guitar was built with Adirondack top bracing and hot hide glue construction.  Adirondack bracing makes the top stiffer, providing additional volume and headroom.  Hot Hide Glue adds responsiveness across the spectrum.  This type of glue was used on the early guitars we have all fallen in love with, but later phased out due to the time required to use it, not to mention the mess it makes.  The sonic benefits can't be ignored, adding not only responsiveness, but a new level of detail and clarity.

The voicing of this special D/PW is reminiscent of the Tony Rice model with its spectacular balance and note definition. An enlarged soundhole balances out woofy bass frequencies and also has the desirable side effect of allowing  a microphone to be placed closer to the soundhole without introducing proximity effect.  The bracing is moved back significantly compared to a standard D/PW, which is what instantly reminds us of the balanced tone of the Tony Rice model.  The scale also matches the TR Pro model, measuring in at 25 1/4".  In true TR fashion, the headstock has no inlay and the logo was moved to the 12th fret.

For the ultimate in modern playability, the neck has a custom profile, resulting in a sleek modified V.  With a 1 11/16" nut width, lightning fast runs can be played with ease!

This guitar has one ding on the edge of the headstock, as seen in the detail photograph. The original owners name is on the label, though we blurred it out to maintain privacy online.  Original Ameritage hardshell case included.
