Wow! We have a few incredible sounding D1A models in the shop right now, this one steps up the tone quite considerably with a varnish finish... it certainly lives up to every bit of the hype and more!
Although a bit more fragile, the varnish finish is more flexible and allows the wood to resonate more, significantly smoothing out the mids and highs of the Mahogany back and sides and Adirondack top enhancing the low end considerably. For the die hard rosewood fans here in the shop, this guitar bridges the gap between rosewood and mahogany, projecting incredibly articulate note definition common with mahogany and the power and low end associated with rosewood. It would be an understatement to say we are floored with the sound of this guitar and the varnish really makes this instrument sound special.
This guitar is loaded with custom enhancement including a 1 23/32 which increases the string spacing at the bridge to 2 1/4 and is the perfect compromise for players who feel 1 11/16 is to crowded but 1 3/4 is a bit too wide. Other custom visual options contributing to the overall muted elegance of this guitar include the absence of fretboard inlays, tortoise bound headstock and fretboard with B/W purfle.
If we didn't have to ship this D1AV out to a customer, we would have never put the guitar down... it is simply amazing!
