The Bourgeois Country Boy is Dana's standard 18-style dreadnought, featuring a Sitka Spruce top and mahogany back and sides. This guitar adds a custom hot hide glue assembly option that further increases the responsiveness of the dreadnought body style.
Hide Glue was the original glue used on the early Martin guitars but has been phased out by many luthiers due to the added time it takes to work with... not to mention it is very messy! Hot Hide glue sets up like glass, offering a more immediate and efficient transfer of energy throughout the top, making the overall guitar more responsive with a clarity of tone that is unmatched.
Sitka Spruce is a top tonewood that is favorable for many players, as it is one of the most versatile tonewoods available. In regards to stiffness, Sitka is much more flexible than Adirondack, therefore exhibiting increased responsiveness and a richer low end when played at moderate levels. While not quite as powerful for the heaviest of pickers, Sitka lends itself quite nicely for fingerstyle playing as well, allowing you to cover much more musical playing styles than an Adirondack dreadnought will be capable of... not to mention that many players simply don't play hard enough to comfortably drive an Adirondack top. Sitka Spruce is in many ways the perfect compromise!
Mahogany backed dreadnoughts are inspired from the legendary D-18 style of guitars. They are known and loved for their dry tone with crystal clear definition. Mahogany guitars historically record very well... in fact, even Clarence White himself played a D-18 on many of his classic recordings, as the mahogany gave them a more balanced recorded tone than the famous D-28 that Tony Rice now plays. Recently, Ray LaMontagne has been playing his Sitka topped Country Boy. Stop by our shop and find out why!
