Here's what Dana says about Madagascar: "Madagascar rosewood will probably get you closest to the sound of Brazilian, and at a much lower price. Madagascar has much of the same rich overtone range as Brazilian, as well as a slightly "reverby" quality. It's a little heavier than Brazilian, so I have to be careful about selecting the right top and the right neck in order to keep the weight down and not adversely effect its response characteristics. " Since Dana himself still picks every top, back and side for each guitar we build, this isn't a problem with his builds.
