SOLD: Collings OM1AC with Adirondack Red Spruce Top

Collings OM1AC with Adirondack Red Spruce Top

OM stands for Orchestra Model, but 80 years after this body shape was first designed it has become the most popular 14-fret model with fingerstyle guitar soloists who choose to play on steel strings. Yet flatpickers also find it appealing, and when the graceful cutaway is added the OM1 is often used by lead players who routinely explore all 20 frets. The compact shape makes the Collings OM1AC equally easy to handle onstage or when sitting on the couch, and the relatively shallow body (barely over 4 inches deep) results in balanced tone and an immediate response.

This particular model is custom designed to the exact specifications of Pete Huttlinger's OM1AC. Perfectly suiting Pete's style of playing, it features a custom Adirondack Red Spruce top, bringing punch and clarity; mahogany sides and back, bringing brightness and note definition; a custom 1 3/4 nut width and a custom cutaway for easier access to the lower frets.

Pete Huttlinger used his OM1AC on the album, The Santa Rita Connection - and it is featured on the cover. If you are looking for that award winning fingerstyle sound, this is the guitar for you. To see Pete play this guitar, click here for a Collings showcase.

SOLD: Collings Custom 002HE w/ Engelmann Spruce Top

The dimensions of Collings' 002H are similar to the original design first introduced around the Civil War. The comfortable size and timeless appearance of the Collings 00 is matched by the ease of playing a wide (1 13/16) neck and shorter string scale affords. The tone of a typical 00 is balanced and precise, and we've seen it adopted for a wide range of playing styles from the singer/songwriter fair to ragtime solos - but it really sings when used for fingerstyle. With this in mind, we ordered this guitar with a few custom features with the discerning fingerstylist in mind.

This 002H is built with an Engelmann Spruce top. Engelmann is the one of the softest spruces used in guitar making, a quality that lends itself to light playing. As opposed to Sitka, Engelmann Spruce has much broader and stronger overtones, with an effortless response due to its weight. While this guitar may not have as much headroom as a standard 002H, it easily makes up for it in responsiveness - a perfect quality for fingerstylists and light players. This sweet little thing has a warm, rich tone with that signature Collings' volume. The 1 13/16 nut width is matched with a 2 5/16 string spacing; giving ample room for bare fingers and picks. We opted for a solid peghead for all of those who just can't stand the slothead.

SOLD: Collings CW Dreadnought w/ Mahogany

Collings CW Dreadnought w/ Mahogany

Just when we thought we had heard Collings' loudest mahogany dreadnought - in walks the CW. What an absolute bluegrass cannon! Collings states that the CW is named after the famous Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, Kansas. But based on the enlarged soundhole and dalmatian pickguard; we believe the CW may share the initals of a certain bluegrass hero.

The CW is the result of numerous requests and custom orders by Collings players for a dreadnought ideal for flatpicking. The Adirondack Red Spruce top is bracing with scalloped Adirondack bracing, while the tongue brace is left out. These core changes hark back to the way early 14-fret dreadnoughts were built. The bracing pattern and construction allows for even more headroom, projection, and explosive volume then a typical dreadnought - making it a flatpicker's dream. Allow me to put emphasis on just how loud this guitar is - it's just incredible! The power and strength this guitar boasts is unmatched - easily cutting through any bluegrass circle you can find. We opted for the mahogany version of the famed CW this time around, and we were rewarded with crisp, defined, airy notes that jump out with clarity and projection.

The CW pays homage to the distinct characteristics of famous dreadnoughts in the world of bluegrass. The body is bound in tortoise and graced with a striking dalmatian style pickguard. The fingerboard is also bound in tortoise, but is left simple with no inlay. A true powerhouse and not for the faint of heart, but not to be missed by serious flatpicking pros!

SOLD: Collings Custom C-10 Deluxe w/ Engelmann Spruce and Deep Body

Collings Custom C-10 Deluxe w/ Engelmann Spruce and Deep Body

We have fallen madly in love with C-10s of all kinds lately. The variety of custom options are somewhat dizzying, but we have listened to your requests and built some of the most popular combinations. The newest addition has an extra deep body, Engelmann Spruce top, and Collings killer sunburst. It channels a very Nick Lucas-esque vibe: but with the signature sustain and power Collings' are known for. From Dylan folk hybrid strumming to blues fingerpicking - this C10 delivers!

The C-10 is built with a narrow waist and small upper bout; resulting in a precise, focused response. The smaller upper bout is gratifying and untroubled - a true dream to play. It's this unique body size that allows the C-10 to project a more focused mid-range then other smaller bodied guitars. The extra deep (4 5/8) body depth is the secret to this model. The increased size brings an added level of projection, power, strong bass presence, and rounded trebles. The response to fingerpicking is just incredible! The Engelmann top responsive effortlessly; articulating with gratifying balance and airy, woody overtones.

The body is bound in ivoroid, with a simple purfling. And just look at that drop-dead sunburst! The folks at Collings have done it again! With its unique shape and asymmetrical headstock's lines echoed in the curvilinear pickguard, Collings has yet again provided us with a spectacular guitar!

SOLD: Collings Custom C-10MGAVar w/ Madagascar Rosewood and Varnish Finish

Collings Custom C-10MGAVar w/ Madagascar Rosewood and Varnish Finish

We've realized that anything varnish coming out of Collings' shop is incredible, but this one is breathtakingly spectacular! You Collings' fans are always searching for Madagascar Rosewood, especially considering the increasing rarity. We are pleased to say this is one of several coming to our shop, but is still in quite short supply. While you won't read it on Collings' website, the C-10 is very similar to the Gibson L-00 of old. It is built with a similar narrow waist and small upper bout; resulting in a precise, focused response. I'll be the first to say that this one blows the doors off of any old L-00 I've ever played!

The smaller upper bout is gratifying and untroubled - a true dream to play. It's this unique body size that allows the C-10 to project a more focused mid-range then other smaller bodied guitars. That being said, this one does not lack in the bass and trebles - thanks to the gorgeous Madagascar Rosewood and Adriondack Spruce. Madagascar evenly responsive across the entire tonal register and have a crisp, sparkling trebles commonly associated with Brazilian Rosewood. The open, responsive, and rich tone this C-10 exhibits when strummed is perhaps only surpassed by its remarkable response to fingerpicking. Blues and folk tunes feel right at home, with a strong bass presence with a thumbpick. The Adirondack provides practically endless headroom, while boosting the trebles with a lovely crispness.

As if it didn't have enough to offer tonally, this guitar is also finished with a hand rubbed varnish. The luthiers at Collings use an alkyd resin varnish on their varnish finished mandolins and guitars. It does not have the sheen or gloss of lacquer, but has a deeper looking luster like early oil varnishes from the 1800s or the early Loar instruments. The difference in tone is undeniable. The varnish creates a faster response with deeper and warmer treble, and a greater overall dynamic range. It feels like a vintage guitar, and responds just as well. This guitar is truly special, and won't be around for long.

SOLD: Collings Custom D1HA w/ Adirondack Top

Collings Custom D1HA w/ Adirondack Top

There are certain traditions and build philosophies that are engrained in our minds over the years. For some reason or another, herringbone purfling is usually reserved for rosewood guitars. No we don't want to step on any toes, but the real shame behind with this idea is the tonal difference a herringbone purfling brings to ANY guitar. In our experience, mahogany dreadnoughts with herringbone are nothing short of brilliant. So, we ordered a D1A and awaited the results. We are pleased to say that it is quite the breathtaking guitar! Like most all Collings, this guitar has a ample volume and presence, which is backed up by an Adirondack Red Spruce top. Adirondack was the legendary topwood used on most pre-war American-made guitars. Adirondack is much stiffer than Sitka Spruce, resulting in quick response and tremendous volume. When coupled with Mahogany, notes are airy, crisp, and well defined. The advantage to using herringbone is the edge of the top must be routed slightly larger to accommodate for the width of the purfling. It results in a more resonate and responsive top - right out of the box. This D1HA has a wonderful breathe and life to it. Surely not to be missed!

SOLD: Collings Custom SJ w/ European Maple and Full Body Sunburst

Collings Custom SJ w/ European Maple and Full Body Sunburst

The SJ is Collings' version of what is commonly called a small Jumbo. Although the 16 inch lower bout is slightly wider than a dreadnought, and the sides almost as deep, the tight curve at the waist creates in a very different sound chamber.

SJs, especially in European Maple, boast a tremendous volume and mid-range response. The beautiful thing about European Maple, besides its stellar figuring, is it's suprising bass response. In the short time this guitar has been hanging around our shop, everyone who plays it is blow away by the low-end and bass. Players looking for the bass and overall volume of a large guitar, but with lots of treble clarity and midrange crunch, often find just what they need in the curvaceous SJ. This particular guitar is custom finished with the always stunning full body sunburst. With the buzz around the store, this one won't grace our presence very long.

SOLD: Pre-Owned: 2006 Collings 000-1A Cutaway with Adirondack Top

2006 Collings 000-1A Cutaway with Adirondack Top

The 12-fret 000 has the same general appearance as the Collings 00, but in a larger size with longer string scale. Although it's the same width and depth as the OM, the longer body typically produces more bass and overall volume. This makes the Collings 000 ideal for string-band purists or any guitarist who wants a maximum of power from an instrument of comfortable size with an elegant, old-time appearance.

The Adirondack top on this cutaway provides ample power suitable for most applications. While the tone is not as deep as a dreadnought, the tone is punchy, bright, clear and loud while being considerably smaller than it's larger siblings. The cutaway allows soloists a few extra high notes while retaining the playability that 12-fret guitars offer.

This guitar is in very good overall condition with a minor dent on the top under the bridge and one near the top of the upper bout near the binding. There are also a few minor dents on the top and bottom sides and sides and some very light finish scratches on the top and back. These flaws are too small to photograph. Includes hardshell case.

SOLD: Pre-Owned: 2001 Collings OM3SB Sunburst with Sitka Top and Rosewood Back and Sides

2001 Collings OM3SB Sunburst with Sitka Top and Rosewood Back and Sides

Here is a fantastic example of a 9 year old Collings OM3 with a beautiful sunburst. The OM size, nearly 80 years after it was designed, has become the most popular 14-fret model with fingerstyle guitarists who play on steel strings, yet flatpickers also find it appealing. The OM3 model has been a personal favorite for Pete Townsend since he first began using Collings guitars in 2000. The compact shape makes the OM3 extremely comfortable and easy to handle either onstage or sitting on the couch. The relatively shallow body, at just over 4 deep, results in balanced tone and immediate response.

This OM3 is Collings' highest appointment level from the factory. The backstrip on this guitar is an upgraded multi-color mosaic and quite stunning. The 1 3/4 nut gives players a bit more fingering room over the standard 1 11/16 nut. The sunburst on this guitar is a fine example of Collings' work along with almost a mirror image on the headstock overlay. The guitar has aged beautifully and has opened up nicely. The mid tones are punchy and the treble is crisp and immediate.

This guitar has a K&K pickup system installed. The condition is good overall but there is some wear consistent with the 2001 build date. There are some minor dents and scratches on the tip of the headstock, as shown in the photograph. There is minor fretwear on the bottom 3 strings in the first position. Not able to be portrayed in the photographs, there is light finish scratching on the top, back, and sides as well as the pickguard. There is a a dark area in the wood on the back of the headstock that we believe, after discussing with Collings, is a natural result of the wood used and the way it took the stain. Includes hardshell case.

*NEW PRICE* 2001 Collings C-10 Custom w/ Sunburst Top

While you won't read it on Collings' website, the C-10 is very similar to the Gibson L-00 of old. It is built with a similar narrow waist and small upper bout; resulting in a precise, focused response. The smaller upper bout is gratifying and untroubled - a true dream to play. It's this unique body size that allows the C-10 to project a more focused mid-range then other smaller bodied guitars. This mid-range is combined with a crisp low-end and rounded, mellow trebles. The Sitka Spruce top adds versatility, standing up to flatpicking, fingerpicks, and bare fingers alike. The C-10 is, in our opinion, perfectly appointed. The body is bound in ivoroid, with a simple purfling. And just look at that drop-dead sunburst! The folks at Collings have done it again! With its unique shape and asymmetrical headstock's lines echoed in the curvilinear pickguard, C10 models offer a welcome alternative for those who find that most small acoustic guitars look too much alike.

This particular guitar is in great condition. There are some marks on the headstock, as seen in the detail photos. There is also a slight finish mark on the back lower bout near the center. There is also two slight indentations on the top, near the lower bout on the treble side. They are near each other, and both roughly a 1/4 in length. It includes the original hardshell case.
