Collings OM3H German Rosewood Deep Body OM

Collings OM3H German Rosewood Deep Body OM

The OM body size has been favored by fingerstyle players for years, but has made its mark in flatpicking and strumming with its unique clarity and projection. Living up to the pedigree and namesake Collings has established, this OM3 is no exception that is a true delight to play.

The OM3 is built with a custom German Spruce top, Indian Rosewood back and sides, a solid Mahogany neck, and Ebony fingerboard and bridge. It boasts the projection and tonal clarity Collings is known for, while still maintaining a good measure of warmth on the bottom end.

German Spruce, a special appointment on this guitar, provides a rich, complex tone and is perfect for many players who play fingerstyle as well as flatpick. German Spruce is stiffer than Sitka, providing more headroom and power, yet more flexible than Adirondack so that it responds well to a lighter attack. This allows the guitar to be played fingerstyle while maintaining a high level of comfort, without sacrificing the invaluable headroom offered by a stiffer spruce.

Accompaniments like the Adirondack bracing make this guitar that much more menacing.  Adirondack Bracing offers a more efficient transfer of string energy to the top, since Adirondack is much stiffer than the standard Sitka braces.  This allows for a more responsive and powerful sound board. The body size of the OM lends itself towards a more focused and defined tone than a typical dreadnought size.

ON LAYAWAY: Collings Custom OM1C Pete Huttlinger Signature Model

Collings Custom OM1C Pete Huttlinger Signature Model

From Collings' Website:

Pete Huttlinger is recognized around the world as one of the greatest fingerstyle guitar players of our time. His amazing ability to play melody, harmony, rhythm and everything in between has long captivated fans and fellow musicians alike. Pete bought his first Collings in March of 1997. Over the years, he has continually supported and promoted Collings instruments and, in the process, has become a great friend. Unfortunately, our friend's life has recently been turned upside down while he deals with a serious medical condition.

Pete has a congenital heart defect and has become extremely ill during the past year. He suffered a massive stroke last fall and then underwent major heart surgery in May. This procedure left him with a mechanical pump implanted in his heart, requiring him to carry a battery pack that must be worn at all times. He is now gaining strength and is awaiting a heart transplant. Our prayers and heartfelt wishes are with him and his wife Erin.

For decades, his beautiful playing and warm spirit have uplifted many hearts. Now, we would like to give something back. In his honor, we are proud to introduce the limited edition "Pete Huttlinger Signature OM1" model. We will limit the number built to 50 and each of these special guitars will have a custom signed and numbered label.

The Pete Huttlinger model is an OM1 Cutaway with Pete's signature elegantly inlaid in the 12th fret. We'll be offering the guitar in both Sitka and Adirondack top versions to reflect Pete's two main touring guitars. To help Pete and Erin with their astronomical medical costs, $1,000 will be donated for each guitar sold. Any additional donations can be made to the Pete Huttlinger medical fund through his website at http://www.petehuttlinger.com.

SOLD: Collings C10 Dlx German Custom Sunburst

Hear This Instrument: Collings C10 Dlx German Custom Sunburst
Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
Collings C10 Dlx German Custom Sunburst

While you won't read it on Collings' website, the C-10 is very similar to the Gibson L-00 of old. It is built with a similar narrow waist and small upper bout; resulting in a precise, focused response. The smaller upper bout is gratifying and a true dream to play. It's this unique body size that allows the C-10 to project a more focused mid-range then other smaller bodied guitars. This mid-range is combined with a crisp low-end and rounded, mellow trebles.  Of all our acoustic models, the C10 is perhaps the easiest for electric guitarists to adapt to, thanks in part to the more rounded neck profile.

This C10 features a German Spruce top, standing up to flatpicking, fingerpicks, and bare fingers alike, although it is particularly suited to fingerstyle players. This C-10 is, in our opinion, perfectly appointed. The body is bound in ivoroid, with a simple purfling. The sunburst is to die for and the tiger stripe pickguard compliments this finish perfectly. With its unique shape and asymmetrical headstock's lines echoed in the curvilinear pickguard, C10 models offer a welcome alternative for those looking for a smaller guitar that really separates itself from all the rest.

SOLD: Pre-Owned: 2007 Collings 001 Sitka Spruce and Mahogany

Hear This Instrument: 2007 Collings 001 Sitka Spruce and Mahogany
Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
2007 Collings 001 Sitka Spruce and Mahogany

Collings' offers the 00 in its original, 12-fret configuration, a guitar shape that was first designed around the time of the Civil War. Its dimensions are similar to a typical classical guitar, with a slotted headstock and small pyramid bridge. The comfortable size and timeless appearance of the Collings 00 is matched by the ease of playing a wide neck and shorter string scale affords. The tone is balanced and precise, and we've seen it adopted for a wide range of playing styles from simple vocal accompaniment to ragtime solos. When you want the durability of a modern guitar but one that appears rooted in an earlier, simpler time, the Collings 00 is the perfect choice.

The topwood on this guitar is Sitka Spruce, which is very versatile and known for it's lush bass response and easy playability.  The back and sides are mahogany, which produces clear and distinct notes and is very well appreciated in the recording studio, as it is known to be a bit more balanced in front of a microphone than rosewood. A surprising amount of low end means chords are rich and lush, balancing the clear high end of the Mahogany back and sides quite nicely.  This guitar is quite responsive whether played soft or loud... it maintains balance throughout the dynamic spectrum.

This 2007 Collings 001 is in excellent condition with just a few light scratches and small dings to the top, none of which are through the finish. Original Hardshell Case included.

SOLD: Pre-Owned: 2011 Collings D2HG German Spruce with Adirondack Bracing and Indian Rosewood Back and Sides No Tongue Brace

Hear This Instrument: Collings D2HG German Spruce and Indian Rosewood
Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
2011 Collings D2HG German Spruce with Adirondack Bracing and Indian Rosewood Back and Sides No Tongue Brace

The square-shouldered 14-fret dreadnought is the most popular steel-string acoustic guitar body shape in the world. While Collings is certainly not the first to build them, they bring a new tonal clarity to the depth and warmth usually associated with such a large, deep-bodied guitar. Although its bass response makes the dreadnought ideal for vocal accompaniment, Collings versions are also often employed by bluegrass flatpickers who must compete with inherently louder instruments such as banjos and fiddles. The wide range of woods and neck sizes offered allow dreadnought fans to find a Collings model ideally suited to their playing style and tonal preference.

This 2011 D2HG is always an instant shop favorite, featuring a German Spruce top, Adirondack Spruce bracing, and no tongue brace.  We love German Spruce here at Artisan because it not only offers a rich and complex tone, but is versatile for many different playing styles.  German Spruce offers exceptional stiffness together with low weight making the tops more responsive.   We often find German to be a perfect compromise between Sitka and Adirondack, since it responds so well to fingerstyle playing and also holds up to a heavy pick attack.

Accompaniments like the Adirondack bracing and the removal of the tongue brace make this guitar that much more menacing.  Adirondack Bracing offers a more efficient transfer of string energy to the top, since Adirondack is much stiffer than the standard Sitka braces.  This allows for a more responsive and powerful sound board.

We are also a big fan of leaving the tongue brace out of these instruments.  As people search for the mythical tone of old guitars, this brace comes into scrutiny. Martin added the tongue brace in 1940 and it has become standard every since. The absence of a tongue brace frees the top to allow enhanced vibration and results in a richer, fuller, tone with more low end resonance.  It is speculated that Martin added the brace to prevent top cracking, but the years have proven this to have been unnecessary and actually decreases resonation.

Incredibly hard to distinguish used from new, this 2011 Collings D2H is in absolutely pristine condition. There are a few very light scratches on the back that can be seen in the photographs below. There was a strap button installed on the heel of this guitar and has since been removed and professionally repaired at Glaser's here in Nashville. It is such a well done job, it was unable to be even photographed! The  Original Hardshell Case included.
