Browsing Huss & Dalton

Huss and Dalton Guitar Company began in late summer 1995 when Jeff Huss and Mark Dalton had the idea to build the guitar they wanted to play. While appreciating the traditional design, both had a vision of a guitar that paid homage to tradition while incorporating improvements in the structural design and cosmetics of the steel-string guitar.

Huss & Dalton guitars feature two distinct construction styles. On all of the standard series models they employ the use of a 25′ radius built into the guitar top. This is achieved by building an arch into the braces and also preparing the sides in the same radius to accept the soundboard. A positive by-product of the radiused soundboard design, besides its load bearing properties, is a boost in the mid-range. This helps Huss and Dalton guitars to have a more balanced tonal quality than traditional designs. The Traditional series features the same 25′ radius prepared into the braces but the sides are left flat for a more traditional build style. This build style tends to have a more traditional tonal character, emphasizing a bit more bass. All Huss & Dalton guitars are braced with hand split Appalachian Red Spruce, which has a greater strength-to-weight ratio than other brace woods.

Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
Huss & Dalton Traditional OM Custom Italian Spruce & Sinker Mahogany

This Traditional OM Custom from Huss and Dalton has an airy, sweet, and lively tone that only Italian Spruce and "Sinker" Mahogany can bring to the table. Balanced, crisp tone, and responsiveness is the name of the game here; all with Huss & Dalton's trademark "bell-like ring" they have become known for. This guitar is especially suited for fingerstyle players or players with a lighter attack. The even response and airy, shimmery qualities are characteristic of Huss and Dalton OMs, and this one captures that to perfection.

Huss and Dalton applies the same building style to their OM as they do their standard dreadnoughts. The  Huss & Dalton Traditional OM top is built with a 25' radius. A positive by-product of the radiused soundboard design, besides its load bearing properties, is a boost in the mid-range without overpowering the bass and trebles. This is design function is showcased in this guitar - boasting unsurpassed tonal balance. The Italian Spruce top is braced with hand split Adirondack Red Spruce, as are all of Huss and Dalton's guitars, which is a stiffer bracing material that makes for a more responsive and lively top due to a more efficient transfer of energy.

The Sinker Mahogany back and sides produces a tone that is clear and incredibly powerful.  The low end is spectacular and much more prominent than many standard mahogany guitars.  The midrange, while maintaining stunning clarity and definition, is very smooth and pleasant, making for a very balanced D-18 style sound without the harsh upper mids and trebles that can sometimes jump out.

Pre-Owned: 2004 Huss & Dalton TDR Custom Adirondack and Brazilian Rosewood

Hear This Instrument: 2004 Huss & Dalton TDR Custom Adirondack and Brazilian Rosewood
Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
2004 Huss & Dalton TDR Custom Adirondack and Brazilian Rosewood

Huss and Dalton has only been making guitars for a relatively short time- since 1996, however, they have quickly established themselves as a premier builder in an era of excellent luthiers. While keeping an eye on the past, they certainly also have a eye to the future of building. This 2004  TDR Custom with an Adirondack Spruce top and Brazilian Rosewood back and sides is a modern interpretation of the classic Dreadnought.

Adirondack spruce, also known as Eastern Red Spruce,  is the legendary topwood used on most pre-war American-made guitars. Properly quarter-sawn, Adirondack is much stiffer than Sitka and Engelmann spruce, both along and across the grain. This allows builders to make thinner, lighter tops, resulting in lightning-quick response with power to spare.

The back and sides chosen for this custom guitar is Brazilian Rosewood. As many may know, Brazilian Rosewood is an extremely rare tonewood with deep bass and brilliant trebles that was used on the famous vintage guitars we have all grown to love. In a session recording, Brazilian Rosewood will not be as overtone heavy as Indian Rosewood can tend to be. It also retains a wonderful amount of clarity, to provide definition to your flat-picked lines, as well a chordal passages.

Huss and Dalton's guitars are exclusively braced with Adirondack, which has a greater strength-to-weight ratio than other brace woods. This allows the top to be braced using less material (narrower & taller braces), making the top much more responsive & opened up. Coupled with Brazilian Rosewood, every note is well rounded, punchy, incredibly present, and did we mention; loud?! However, loud does not mean that this instrument is not responsive, in fact, far from it.

Some of the other fine appointments on this Huss & Dalton TDR include, Tortoise binding on the body, Tortoise pickguard, Brazilian Rosewood headstock overlay with Abalone Torch inlay, Herringbone purfling, Nickel Waverly tuners, Belly style bridge, and short pattern slotted square inlays.

This Custom Huss & Dalton TDR is in excellent condition. There are a few minor scratches to the top back and sides, as well as a couple very minor indentations that are photographed below. Original Tweed Ameritage Case Included.

Pre-Owned: 2008 Huss & Dalton FS Custom Amazon Rosewood and Engelmann **NEW PRICE**

Hear This Instrument: 2008 Huss & Dalton FS Custom Amazon Rosewood and Engelmann
Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
2008 Huss & Dalton FS Custom Amazon Rosewood and Engelmann **NEW PRICE**

The Huss & Dalton FS, or fingerstyle,  features some of the  most elegant appointments offered by Huss & Dalton. The FS uses elements of several different models including the depth of the Huss & Dalton OM, the light top bracing of the 00, and the body shape of the CM model.

This 2008 Huss & Dalton FS Custom features an Engelmann Spruce top and Amazon Rosewood back and sides. Engelmann exhibits a richer, more complex tone than Sitka, while being remarkably easy to articulate and drive with a light touch. When combined with Huss and Dalton's hand split Adirondack bracing, this helps to further stiffen a softer top, which allows for greater volume production, crisper top end, and more defined basses than normally associated with Engelmann.

Amazon rosewood is often regarded as an alternative to the endangered Brazilian Rosewood. Visually Brazilian and Amazon can look very similar, but often times Amazon Rosewood is not quite as figured as Brazilian. This Piece of Amazon Rosewood has deep and rich brown colors as well as some complementary lighter brown streaks. Amazon Rosewood has a smooth low end as well as nice clean mids and his. When combined with an Engelmann top this guitar shines as a fingerstyle guitar with great balance and a broad dynamic range. This guitar stunned us when flatpicked, excelled at fingerstyle chordal accompaniment, and has quickly become a shop favorite in the very short time it has been here!

This guitar is in excellent condition and very difficult to distinguish from new. There are just a few light scratches to the headstock, top, and back of the guitar. We did our best to capture these scratches as you see in the detail photographs below. Original Hardshell Case Included.

Huss and Dalton TD-M Sinker Mahogany Adirondack Spruce Herringbone Top Purfle

Hear This Instrument: Huss & Dalton TDM Sinker Mahogany
Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
Huss and Dalton TD-M Sinker Mahogany Adirondack Spruce Herringbone Top Purfle

Our Huss and Dalton TD-M, built using old growth "sinker mahogany," is nothing short of spectacular!  Huss and Dalton recently purchased 10 sets of this special wood and we are honored to have this monster sinker mahogany dreadnought in the store.

"If you like wood with a story, then it doesn't get any better than this material. This is material from the bottom of Belizean rivers. Belize used to be a British colony. The British exported a lot of Mahogany from Belize throughout history and during the 19th century they used the rivers of Belize as their main source of transportation. Occasionally the denser Mahogany logs would sink!  These logs for over 100 years had been lost and forgotten, until now!Read the rest of this entry about Sinker Mahogany here.

The topwood on this guitar is Adirondack Spruce, one of the most aggressive and powerful woods available.  Adirondack provides virtually unlimited headroom when played hard, perfect for heavy handed bluegrass players who are competing with louder string band instruments such as banjos and fiddles.

We've also opted for a custom herringbone  top purfle on this guitar.  Not to be confused as just a cosmetic upgrade, the herringbone purfle on this guitar makes the mahogany backed dreadnought much warmer with increased low end and richer high-end and an instant broken-in feel in regards to responsiveness. The tone ends up falling somewhere in between traditional mahogany and rosewood guitars... offering the detail and clarity that only mahogany can offer, but with the herringbone, gaining some of warmth and richness usually associated only with rosewood guitars.

Huss and Dalton TD-R Custom European Spruce and Indian Rosewood

Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
Huss and Dalton TD-R Custom European Spruce and Indian Rosewood

Huss and Dalton's Traditional flattop series brings the best of the past to the present. As is true with all of the instruments Huss and Dalton offers, the T-DR show a reverence and respect for past builders, but with a passion for ingenuity.

The back and sides of this TD-R feature a gorgeous set of Indian Rosewood.  Rosewood is associated with rich, deep bases and sparkling high end with lots of power.  This Huss and Dalton TD-R features  a custom European Spruce top, which brings richness, punch, and complex overtones with lots of headroom. Not as stiff as Adirondack, European Spruce is a bit stiffer than Sitka Spruce offering a great amount of power for flatpicking but allows for comfortable fingerstyle playing as well, with mid-tones that you don't have to fight to pull out of the guitar, even with bare fingers.

Another clear advantage to Huss and Dalton's guitars are their use of Adirondack Spruce for top bracing. Adirondack has a greater strength-to-weight ratio than other brace woods, thus allowing for a more efficient transfer of energy through the top, making the entire guitar more responsive.

Huss and Dalton Road Edition Dreadnought - Sitka Spruce and Mahogany

Introducing, the Huss & Dalton Road Edition - Limited Edition

Established in 1995; Huss and Dalton began when Jeff Huss and Mark Dalton had the idea to build the guitar they wanted to play. While always appreciating the traditional design, both had a vision of a guitar that paid  homage to tradition while incorporating improvements in the the structural design and cosmetics of the steel string guitar. With innovation in mind, as well as value, we are pleased to introduce the Road Edition from our friends at Huss & Dalton.  These guitars will have the full-on H&D tone and volume in a more affordable package.  The Huss & Dalton Road Edition is a limited edition production,  this guitar is one of two Huss and Dalton Road Edition we have on order.

Featuring simplified appointments such as "T" style peghead with no volute with Indian Rosewood veneer, Indian Rosewood Bridge with Ebony pins, however on our model- custom Bone pins, Drop-In Saddle, Kluson Style Gotoh Nickel Tuners, Black/White/Black top purfling, Black Body Binding, and a Tortoise pickguard. These appointments are be classic, simple, yet offer the same refined workmanship you would expect from Jeff Huss and Mark Dalton. The "Road Edition" is an excellent opportunity to get a hand-crafted guitar, built in Virginia - USA, at an excellent value.

The Road Edition features a Sitka Spruce top, Sitka has a lower stiffness-to-weight ratio than Adirondack Red Spruce .  A positive side-effect of this more flexible soundboard is that it doesn't require as much strength (or string attack) to produce it's signature balanced sonic tone.  A player with a lighter attack or even fingerstyle players will find Sitka Spruce much more suited to their playing style. When paired with mahogany, you get a guitar that is extremely well balanced with a dry, woody tone.  Mahogany guitars are also known for being generally easier to record, as they are much more balanced in front of a microphone before you even reach for the EQ. This guitar plays like a dream, is comfortable, and sounds like an old friend! Warm, woody, & dry - with nice crisp trebles.

Huss and Dalton also utilizes Adirondack Spruce bracing as a standard construction method on all of their guitars, an excellent feature, especially at this price point. Adirondack braces are stiffer and lighter, providing more efficient transfer of energy across the top... Discerning players appreciate the quicker "snap" and power from this feature.

As the Road Edition is only available for a limited time, consider ordering yours before they're gone - Call or email your friends at Artisan Guitars!
