Browsing Huss & Dalton

Huss and Dalton Guitar Company began in late summer 1995 when Jeff Huss and Mark Dalton had the idea to build the guitar they wanted to play. While appreciating the traditional design, both had a vision of a guitar that paid homage to tradition while incorporating improvements in the structural design and cosmetics of the steel-string guitar.

Huss & Dalton guitars feature two distinct construction styles. On all of the standard series models they employ the use of a 25′ radius built into the guitar top. This is achieved by building an arch into the braces and also preparing the sides in the same radius to accept the soundboard. A positive by-product of the radiused soundboard design, besides its load bearing properties, is a boost in the mid-range. This helps Huss and Dalton guitars to have a more balanced tonal quality than traditional designs. The Traditional series features the same 25′ radius prepared into the braces but the sides are left flat for a more traditional build style. This build style tends to have a more traditional tonal character, emphasizing a bit more bass. All Huss & Dalton guitars are braced with hand split Appalachian Red Spruce, which has a greater strength-to-weight ratio than other brace woods.

Huss and Dalton Road Edition – Ready for the road!

Huss and Dalton Road Edition - Ready for the road!

Huss and Dalton Road Edition - Ready for the road!

Established in 1995; Huss and Dalton began when Jeff Huss and Mark Dalton had the idea to build the guitar they wanted to play. While always appreciating the traditional design, both had a vision of a guitar that paid  homage to tradition while incorporating improvements in the the structural design and cosmetics of the steel string guitar. With innovation in mind, as well as value, we are pleased to introduce the Road Edition from our friends at Huss & Dalton.  These guitars will have the full-on H&D tone and volume in a more affordable package.  The Huss & Dalton Road Edition is a limited edition production,  this guitar is the last in the series of the Road Editions we have on order.

Featuring simplified appointments such as "T" style peghead with no volute with Indian Rosewood veneer, Indian Rosewood Bridge with Ebony pins, Drop-In Saddle, Kluson Style Gotoh Nickel Tuners, Black/White/Black top purfling, Black Body Binding, and a Tortoise pickguard. These appointments are be classic, simple, yet offer the same refined workmanship you would expect from Jeff Huss and Mark Dalton. The "Road Edition" is an excellent opportunity to get a hand-crafted guitar, built in Virginia - USA, at an excellent value.

The Road Edition features a Sitka Spruce top, Sitka has a lower stiffness-to-weight ratio than Adirondack Red Spruce .  A positive side-effect of this more flexible soundboard is that it doesn't require as much strength (or string attack) to produce it's signature balanced sonic tone.  A player with a lighter attack or even fingerstyle players will find Sitka Spruce much more suited to their playing style.

Huss and Dalton also utilizes Adirondack Spruce bracing as a standard construction method on all of their guitars, an excellent feature, especially at this price point. Adirondack braces are stiffer and lighter, providing more efficient transfer of energy across the top... Discerning players appreciate the quicker "snap" and power from this feature.

We have prepared this limited series Road Edition dreadnought for the summer festival season ahead... Complete with the LR Baggs new M-80 sound-hole pickup, nickel hardware matching strap button, and a high quality Franklin strap!  Package priced at a value that simply cannot be beat, this Sitka topped Indian Rosewood powerhouse dreadnought will get you seen and heard in all the right circles.

The L.R. Baggs M80 Pickup:  The soul of your guitar is in the body - from the tone woods that it's made of to the fine details in the way it was put together. A typical magnetic pickup hears only dry strings. Our patented and iconic M1 was the first magnetic soundhole pickup to capture the upper frequency resonances of the guitar's body for a more natural sound. The M80 pushes this idea to the limits by sensing the entire frequency range of the top, back, side and neck resonances in all three dimensions. Tap on the body and you'll swear that there's a full range mic inside of the guitar - but it's all coming from the M80. This all-in-one pickup installs in minutes and faithfully captures more of your guitar's acoustic soul than any single pickup ever created. Amplify more of the guitar you paid for.

Guitar Strap: Franklin Straps – Original Series – 2.5" Natural Leather with Contrast Stitching - Chocolate w/Gold Stitching

The Franklin Straps Original Series offer supple glove leathers and soft garment suedes, double-ply end tabs, outlined with careful stitching in contrasting colors for a refined, and tailored look.  Models with floral tooled leather end tabs have an elegant Old World appeal.

Adjusts from 46" to 56".

Pre-Owned: 2004 Huss & Dalton TDR Custom Adirondack and Brazilian Rosewood **New Price**

Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
2004 Huss & Dalton TDR Custom Adirondack and Brazilian Rosewood **New Price**

Huss and Dalton has only been making guitars for a relatively short time- since 1996, however, they have quickly established themselves as a premier builder in an era of excellent luthiers. While keeping an eye on the past, they certainly also have a eye to the future of building. This 2004  TDR Custom with an Adirondack Spruce top and Brazilian Rosewood back and sides is a modern interpretation of the classic Dreadnought.

Adirondack spruce, also known as Eastern Red Spruce,  is the legendary topwood used on most pre-war American-made guitars. Properly quarter-sawn, Adirondack is much stiffer than Sitka and Engelmann spruce, both along and across the grain. This allows builders to make thinner, lighter tops, resulting in lightning-quick response with power to spare.

The back and sides chosen for this custom guitar is Brazilian Rosewood. As many may know, Brazilian Rosewood is an extremely rare tonewood with deep bass and brilliant trebles that was used on the famous vintage guitars we have all grown to love. In a session recording, Brazilian Rosewood will not be as overtone heavy as Indian Rosewood can tend to be. It also retains a wonderful amount of clarity, to provide definition to your flat-picked lines, as well a chordal passages.

Huss and Dalton's guitars are exclusively braced with Adirondack, which has a greater strength-to-weight ratio than other brace woods. This allows the top to be braced using less material (narrower & taller braces), making the top much more responsive & opened up. Coupled with Brazilian Rosewood, every note is well rounded, punchy, incredibly present, and did we mention; loud?! However, loud does not mean that this instrument is not responsive, in fact, far from it.

Some of the other fine appointments on this Huss & Dalton TDR include, Tortoise binding on the body, Tortoise pickguard, Brazilian Rosewood headstock overlay with Abalone Torch inlay, Herringbone purfling, Nickel Waverly tuners, Belly style bridge, and short pattern slotted square inlays.

This Custom Huss & Dalton TDR is in excellent condition. There are a few minor scratches to the top back and sides, as well as a couple very minor indentations that are photographed below. Original Tweed Ameritage Case Included.

Pre-Owned: 2009 Huss and Dalton TOM-R Custom Sitka Spruce and Brazilian Rosewood

Hear This Instrument: 2009 Huss and Dalton TOM-R Custom Sitka Spruce and Brazilian Rosewood
Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
2009 Huss and Dalton TOM-R Custom Sitka Spruce and Brazilian Rosewood

Brazilian Rosewood is an extremely rare tonewood with deep bass and brilliant trebles that was used on the famous vintage guitars we have all grown to love.  An international embargo on trade on Brazilian rosewood products guarantees that the relatively few sets remaining in this country will continue to spiral in price as the supply dwindles.

This guitar features a Sitka Spruce top that compliments the Brazilian back and sides beautifully! A sitka spruce top makes for a very versatile guitar, whether played with fingers or a pick.  Sitka is very warm with rich basses and doesn't require as much strength to pull the tone out of the guitar.  This guitar is highly responsive and virtually plays itself with even the lightest pick attack. The custom ordered low profile neck shape fits comfortably in your hand and makes for hours of effortless playing.

All of Huss and Dalton's standard series models employ the use of a 25' radius built into the guitar top. This is achieved by building an arch into the braces and also preparing the sides in the same radius to accept the soundboard. All of Huss and Dalton's Traditional series feature the same 25' radius prepared into the braces but the sides are left flat for a more traditional build style. This build style tends to have a more traditional tonal character, emphasizing a bit more bass. The Sitka Spruce top is braced with hand split Adirondack, as are all of Huss and Dalton's guitars, which is a stiffer bracing material that makes for a more responsive and lively top due to a more efficient transfer of energy.

This guitar is difficult to distinguish used from new, with just few light finish scratches. There is a small 1cm dent to the lower bout of the guitar that is not through the finish, this dent can be seen in detail in the photographs below.  Original hardshell case included.

SOLD: Huss and Dalton DS Custom Red Spruce and Mahogany Short Scale

Hear This Instrument: Huss and Dalton DS Custom Red Spruce and Mahogany Short Scale
Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
Huss and Dalton DS Custom Red Spruce and Mahogany Short Scale

Huss and Dalton DS Custom Red Spruce and Mahogany

Huss and Dalton Guitar Company, Inc., began in late summer 1995 when Jeff Huss and Mark Dalton had the idea to build the guitar they wanted to play.  While appreciating the traditional design, both had a vision of a guitar that paid homage to tradition while incorporating improvements in the structural design and cosmetics of the steel-string guitar.

We have chosen to order a custom DS based on the classic Gibson Slope-Shoulder sunburst model - world renowned for it's full, balanced expression, warm bass, and excellent projection, thanks to advanced bracing techniques utilized by Gibson at the time.  Gibson nicknamed the J-45 their "workhorse" and players such as Bob Dylan and Buddy Holly helped the guitar live up to the name. We took a look at specifications from the period, and chose correctly.

Built with Adirondack top, like you would expect from a pre-war inspired slope shoulder, this one has all the volume, yet never loses clarity...ever! Additionally, if you are going to build a pre-war inspired guitar you've got to attach the bracing with Hot Hide Glue, which was the original glue used on the early guitars but has been phased out by many luthiers due to the added time it takes to work with... not to mention it is very messy!  Hot Hide glue sets up like glass, offering a more immediate and efficient transfer of energy throughout the top, making the overall guitar more responsive with a clarity of tone that is unmatched.

A  Rosewood fretboard and bridge really makes this instrument stand out from the standard models and produces a little less punchy tone than an ebony FB and bridge with nice overtones. We have found that traditionally speaking, to truly have a J45, you have to have a Rosewood fretboard and bridge, as well as a short scale, rather than the longer 25-1/2" scale on square shouldered guitars. This is now one of our favorite ways to order the slope shoulder from any of our builders!

Last but not least, the appointments are a finishing touch, and again, a nod to the past, with one foot firmly in the future - unbound fretboard and headstock, with Waverly tuners and elegant Ivoroid buttons, and a true "Cut-Through" saddle. This is truly a wonderfully versatile guitar with all the Vintage inspired appointments and bell-like resonance one would expect from the fine builders at Huss and Dalton. This Custom Slope Shouldered Huss and Dalton DS Custom guitar is a absolute powerhouse. Big in sound, yet not short on clarity, this guitar is a nod to the best traditional slope shoulder guitars of the 30's and 40's. Great for strumming, but also ideally suited for players who are looking for a dreadnought body style to venture into the world of fingerstyle playing. If you are looking for the perfect recording guitar to sit in a track perfectly, or just want one of the finest interpretations of a Slope Shoulder, your ship has come in!
