Browsing Huss & Dalton

Huss and Dalton Guitar Company began in late summer 1995 when Jeff Huss and Mark Dalton had the idea to build the guitar they wanted to play. While appreciating the traditional design, both had a vision of a guitar that paid homage to tradition while incorporating improvements in the structural design and cosmetics of the steel-string guitar.

Huss & Dalton guitars feature two distinct construction styles. On all of the standard series models they employ the use of a 25′ radius built into the guitar top. This is achieved by building an arch into the braces and also preparing the sides in the same radius to accept the soundboard. A positive by-product of the radiused soundboard design, besides its load bearing properties, is a boost in the mid-range. This helps Huss and Dalton guitars to have a more balanced tonal quality than traditional designs. The Traditional series features the same 25′ radius prepared into the braces but the sides are left flat for a more traditional build style. This build style tends to have a more traditional tonal character, emphasizing a bit more bass. All Huss & Dalton guitars are braced with hand split Appalachian Red Spruce, which has a greater strength-to-weight ratio than other brace woods.

Huss and Dalton's OO produces a surprising amount of volume out of a small bodied guitar. Very clear and balanced in tone, it is braced for light gauge strings and designed with the fingerstyle player in mind.

SOLD: Huss & Dalton 00-SP w/ Engelmann Spruce Top

We adore Huss and Dalton's 00s, trying to keep them in stock all the time. Despite our best efforts, they just rush out they door as soon as we order them! Their 12-fret 00 produces a surprising amount of volume out of a small body guitar. Huss and Dalton choose Engelmann Spruce for their 00; a top perfectly suited for fingerstyle players. Engelmann exhibits a richer, more complex tone than Sitka, while being remarkably easy to articulate and drive with a light touch. Even the softest of players with be able to appreciate the overtone and response this 00-SP displays. The 00-SP has ample warmth and richness that fills a room. Studio musicians will appreciate how incredibly balanced it is across the fingerboard. No frequency is left unrepresented.

Perhaps one of the coolest feature is Huss and Dalton's new satin finished necks. The finishing process they use is a bit different than other satins we have felt. There is no stickiness whatsoever, your hand practically glides along like a sparrow in the air.

Huss and Dalton braces even their 00-SPs with hand split Adirondack Spruce bracing. A stiffer wood than Sitka, this allows for a more lively and responsive top without sacrificing volume and projection. The 00-SP is braced for light gauge strings, on par with most fingerstylist's needs. Other design features that such players will enjoy are the pyramid bridge and traditional slotted headstock. All these little details are design with purpose in mind, adding increased sustain and a lovely liveliness and breath. We love the 00-SP, and are such you will too!

SOLD: Huss & Dalton TD-R Custom

Huss & Dalton TD-R Custom

Huss and Dalton's Traditional flattop series Rosewood dreadnought brings the best of the past to the present. As is true with all of the instruments Huss and Dalton offers, the T-DR show a reverence and respect for past builders, but with a passion for ingenuity.

We opted for a custom Adirondack Red Spruce top, which brings richness, punch, and complex overtones. Adirondack is ideal for flatpickers or players who play with a heavy hand. It maintains clarity and ample volume at all dynamic levels. One of the clear advantages to Huss and Dalton's guitars are their use of Adirondack for top bracing. Adirondack has a greater strength-to-weight ratio than other brace woods. Coupled with Indian Rosewood, every note is well rounded and warm.
