Collings OM 42ACVnVarn Adirondack and Indian Rosewood, Varnish Finish, Adi Bracing, Vintage Now Neck and Bridge with 42 Style Inlays and Cutaway

Collings OM 42ACVnVarn Adirondack and Indian Rosewood, Varnish Finish, Adi Bracing, Vintage Now Neck and Bridge with 42 Style Inlays and Cutaway

'OM' stands for "Orchestra Model," but 80 years after this body shape was first designed it has become the most popular 14-fret model with fingerstyle guitar soloists who choose to play on steel strings... yet with an Adirondack Spruce top, flatpickers also find it very appealing with virtually unlimited headroom and power when you need it.

The compact shape makes the Collings OM equally easy to handle onstage or when sitting on the couch, and the hand rubbed varnish finish on this custom model results in balanced tone and an immediate response with a much larger bottom end than is generally found on OM sized guitars.   Varnish finishes are very time consuming, but the tonal benefit makes it well worth the wait.  The overall tone is smoother and not as "jangly" as a new nitro finish.  This makes the guitar sound more vintage right from the start.

The top of this guitar is Adirondack Spruce, the stiffest of the topwoods.  This makes the guitar have lots of power with virtually unlimited headroom and a lightning fast attack with unmatched clarity and definition.  To take this principle one step further, the top bracing is also Adirondack Spruce, making the top even stiffer.

The neck profile on this guitar is the "Vintage Now" option.  This is their medium neck profile, which is very comfortable, adding a little bit of mass to the overall neck shape.  We also find the greater mass of the neck contributes to a richer, fuller sound.  The nut width is a comfortable 1 3/4" on a Vintage Now neck.

The back and sides of this guitar feature an exquisite set of Indian Rosewood.  Rosewood back and sides make a guitar that is very rich with a full low end.  Rosewood also imparts a natural reverb type effect, with lots of overtones and note decay.

Visual appointments on this guitar include a flowerpot inlay on the headstock and 42 style abalone top purfling, with 42 style snowflakes on the fingerboard.

The tone of this special guitar sounds much more like a dreadnought than an OM.  Everyone in the shop is floored by the massive tone and projection of this instrument... it's that good!

Collings OM2H Sitka and Indian Rosewood

Hear This Instrument: Collings OM2H Sitka and Indian Rosewood
Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
Collings OM2H Sitka and Indian Rosewood

‘OM’ stands for “Orchestra Model,” but 80 years after this body shape was first designed it has become the most popular 14-fret model with fingerstyle guitar soloists who choose to play on steel strings… flatpickers also find it very appealing as the OM body shape allows for a more balanced tonal fingerprint than a Dreadnought would. No wonder that when Eric Clapton recorded his famous " Unplugged" record,  he chose an OM body size!

The compact shape makes the Collings OM equally easy to handle onstage or when sitting on the couch. The tone is focused and powerful, as are all Collings' guitars.

The topwood on this Collings OM2H is Sitka Spruce, paired with rosewood back and sides.  This is a classic combination that is highly versatile for many playing styles.  Sitka can be played fingerstyle or with a flatpick and can excel at both.  It is ideal for flatpickers who don't require the stiffness of Adirondack, offering more volume and responsiveness from a lighter touch.  When combined with rosewood on the back and sides, Sitka is very lush and has a warm, rich low end.  The highs are also crystal clear on a Collings, since only the highest grade Sitka Spruce is chosen for their instruments.  You really can't go wrong with this model!

Collings 0002H Cutaway Sitka and Indian Rosewood

Hear This Instrument: Collings 0002H Cutaway Sitka & Indian Rosewood
Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
Collings 0002H Cutaway Sitka and Indian Rosewood

The Collings 12 fret models have been inspired by the traditional slotted headstock beauties of yesteryear. The 000 12 fret guitars trace their roots back to the late 1920s, with a very similar look to the Collings 00 the 0002h is a bit larger in size with a longer string scale.

This Collings 0002h Cutaway features a Sitka Spruce top, paired with rosewood back and sides. This classic combination is very versatile and complimentary for many different playing styles.

Some other features of this Collings 0002h include herringbone purfling, ebony fingerboard and pyramid bridge, M.O.P. Collings logo, and hardshell case. This guitar also features a cutaway, ensuring easy access to the upper frets.

Collings OM2A Custom Abalone Rosette Adirondack Spruce and Indian Rosewood

Hear This Instrument: Collings OM2A Adirondack with Indian Rosewood
Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
Collings OM2A Custom Abalone Rosette Adirondack Spruce and Indian Rosewood

'OM' stands for "Orchestra Model," but 80 years after this body shape was first designed it has become the most popular 14-fret model with fingerstyle guitar soloists who choose to play on steel strings. The compact shape makes the Collings OM equally easy to handle onstage or when sitting on the couch, and the relatively shallow body (barely over 4 inches deep) results in balanced tone and an immediate response.

Here is a special order OM2A from Collings featuring an Adirondack Spruce top with Indian Rosewood back and sides.  This Collings OM2A also features a custom Abalone Rosette.

Adirondack Spruce is the legendary tonewood used on the early guitars we have all grown to love.    The stiffness to weight ratio makes Adirondack great for players who dig in a bit harder and desire virtually unlimited headroom.  The use of Adirondack Spruce for the bracing makes the bracing lighter and more responsive, offering a more efficient transfer of energy throughout the top.

Santa Cruz D/PW Bearclaw Sitka and Mahogany with Hot Hide Glue and Adirondack Bracing

Hear This Instrument: Santa Cruz D/PW Bearclaw Sitka & Mahogany with Adirondack Bracing and Hot Hide Glue
Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
Santa Cruz D/PW Bearclaw Sitka and Mahogany with Hot Hide Glue and Adirondack Bracing

The Santa Cruz D/PW series are consistently some of our favorite instruments. The pre-war forward shifted bracing pattern favors bass response making these guitars very powerful with a big bluegrass "thump!" Even with this forward shifted bracing, the Santa Cruz team doesn't allow these guitars to lose the signature string balance, as these guitars are equally responsive up and down the register.

We have ordered this D/PW with a few special features that really makes the guitar stand out from the rest. It begins with a special Bearclaw Sitka Spruce top featuring stunning bearclaw figuring. It is our experience that this bearclaw figuring makes the sitka a bit stiffer along the cross grain, making the top more powerful with more clarity and definition.

The upgrades continue with the addition of Adirondack Spruce braces and Hot Hide Glue assembly. Adirondack Bracing offers a more efficient transfer of string energy to the top, since Adirondack is much stiffer than the standard Sitka braces. This allows for a more responsive and powerful sound board. The Hide Glue does much of the same thing, as it sets up hard, like glass, and when used on the bracing offers an incredibly efficient transfer of tone through the wood. The combination of both these features on the already great D/PW makes this guitar a genuine powerhouse.

National Style 1 Tricone Cutaway with Brass Body

National Style 1 Tricone Cutaway with Brass Body

National Reso-Phonic’s Style 1 Tricone shares many of its features with the original National Tricone created by the Dopyera brothers in the late 1920s. This beauty has, as John Dopera himself once said, Tone that flows like a river.

The tricone design is perfect for players who focus on open tunings and slide. The beauty of the design is the increased sustain without sacrificing any volume. Classic players like Tampa Red heavily relied on the original National Tricone, and he would be pleased to have this one in his hands.  This custom National Style 1 Tricone model has a cutaway for easy access to high frets for soaring lead lines.

The brass body is polished to a mirror-like shine and nickel plated. The tone of brass is unmatched – that’s why it has been used for decades. The mahogany neck, finished in a rich mahogany burst, has an ivoroid bound ebony fingerboard. The vintage-style National tuning machines sit on a traditional slotted headstock, finished with the distinctive National shield decal.

Santa Cruz D/PW Mahogany and Bearclaw Sitka With Custom Herringbone

The Santa Cruz D/PW series are consistently some of our favorite instruments. It is our experience that this bearclaw figuring makes the sitka a bit stiffer along the cross grain, making the top more powerful with more clarity and definition.

The upgrades continue with the addition of a herringbone top purfle and matching rosette. The herringbone purfle is a classy visual feature and we find it also adds to the tone and responsiveness of the instrument. By cutting into the outer edge of the soundboard and replacing with herringbone, you are making changes in how the top is isolated from the side of the guitar, how freely it moves and in what direction. In our experience the addition of the herringbone makes the guitar feel a bit more "opened up" right from the start.

The finishing touches on this special D/PW is the headstock, featuring a striped ebony overlay with the "Vintage Script" logo inlaid in Ivoroid.

National Style N-14 German Silver with Custom Chicken Foot Coverplate

National Style N-14 German Silver with Custom Chicken Foot Coverplate

The National Style N-14 is constructed with the famous "German Silver" alloy.  This material, used for the body and coverplate, is the same alloy used by the Dopyera Brothers to create the first National Tricone guitars in the late 1920's.  German Silver produces a bit more clarity and focus than the bell-like brass bodies.  The tone is a bit mellower and more controlled, with a bit less reverberation and overtones and a more extended low end.

National's reproduction Style N-14 Fret meets the demands of players needing easier access to the higher frets. Based on the original models, the hard rock maple neck clears 14 frets to the body. The German Silver body is made of thin gauge material polished to a mirror-like shine and nickel plated. The custom chicken foot coverplate, formed back, and inlaid rosewood peghead complete the authentic look of this guitar.

National Triolian

National Triolian

In 2009 National introduced the Triolian 12-Fret. The National Triolian captures the look and feel of the late 1930’s W-Series Triolians.  The name refers to the original cone design of the first 12 prototype models, which had a single cone top covering up a tri-cone setup inside. They kept the name, even after switching to a single-cone design for the production models.

The thin-gauge steel body is highlighted by flat cut “f” holes, a formed back, and traditional sieve-hole coverplate.  Each body is hand painted in walnut-burst to capture the look of the originals.  The maple neck clears 12 frets to the body and features an ivoroid-bound rosewood fretboard complete with inlaid mother-of-pearl position markers.  Tuners are vintage-style engraved, open gear.

This Triolian  is loud, punchy, and brash without being harsh on the ears. The signature sound of the early models of the 30’s were made famous by Delta Blues players such as Blind Boy Fuller and these current models will blow the originals out of the water. If you are a Delta Blues piedmont style player, look no further… this is your instrument!
