National NRP Steel

Hear This Instrument: National NRP Steel
Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
National NRP Steel

The new NRP from National is built from light gauge steel and features a "nickel rubbed finish" (same as the cover plate on the El Trovador models), and priced the same as their NRP painted models.

The rubbed finish is desirable for two reasons... It has a vintage look, and it doesn't show fingerprints. For years we have ordered this finish as an option on otherwise highly polished nickel finishes, and it looks good and wears well. This finish usually carries a $300 upcharge on other models like the ResoRocket Style N, and the Style 1 Tricone, so we expect it to be very popular.

The thin-gauge steel body is highlighted by rolled f-holes, a formed back, and traditional ribbed sieve-hole coverplate. The thin-gauge steel provides increased resonance over the traditional thicker steel bodies.  Chords are rich and complex with slight overtones, for a pronounced note quality that allows it to shine when played with one of our Diamond Slides. It sustains, and has a beautiful roundness to each note.

When you pick up a National NRP resonator guitar and begin playing, you can instantly see the reasons why players prefer Nationals over any other brand of resonator guitar. They are not only easy

to hold and play, the volume and tone delivered almost sounds like it has it’s own rhythm section built in. Even the simplest rhythm and lead passages take on a supercharged quality.

Santa Cruz VJ Vintage Jumbo with Adirondack Bracing and Hot Hide Glue

Santa Cruz VJ Vintage Jumbo with Adirondack Bracing and Hot Hide Glue

The Advanced Jumbo, J-45 and the iconic early 60's Epiphone Texan were the coolest accessories that an aspiring cowboy singer could shoot for. Each one of these guitars was a favorite of several of SCGC's veteran luthiers. As it is their style to interpret rather than copy, the Vintage Jumbo Model combines the essence of coolness possessed by its forbearers with built-in improvements from SCGC's decades of lutherie.

The VJ's Sitka Spruce top is braced and voiced for volume and the body is built with premium Mahogany for clarity of tone. The balance favors the bass to the degree found in the originals, not to the excess found in many from the golden era of the square-shouldered brand. What this really pretty face has over its predecessors is SCGC's hallmark complexity of overtones, sustain and power.

This Custom Santa Cruz Vintage Jumbo also features Hot Hide Glue Construction with Adirondack Spruce bracing. Hide Glue was the original glue used on the early Martin guitars but has been phased out by many luthiers due to the added time it takes to work with... not to mention it is very messy!  Hot Hide glue sets up like glass, offering a more immediate and efficient transfer of energy throughout the top, making the overall guitar more responsive with a clarity of tone that is unmatched.

The Vintage Jumbo is the ideal Blues guitar. Inspired by the classic round-shouldered dreadnoughts of the 1940's, we infused it with the characteristic Santa Cruz volume, balance and complexity to create a guitar that can cover a lot of different styles. The VJ is dripping with the kind of deep, rich bass and sweet trebles that really shine in chord-oriented work. You won't find this one coming up short when you call on it for more!

Pre-Owned: 1997 Scheerhorn Dobro Standard Body Sitka Spruce and Mahogany

1997 Scheerhorn Dobro Standard Body Sitka Spruce and Mahogany

Tim Scheerhorn redesigned the Dobro from the ground up. He uses all solid woods and has always used solid woods, instead of laminates. He took the Dobro to be an acoustic instrument, which it is, and wanted to make the most resonant guitar he could make. He thought that the sound well inside resonator instruments "locked all the resonant qualities of the top and back" inside the guitar. He uses internal baffles to capture the guitar and a specially designed ramped, parabolically curved baffle that starts at the waist and curves toward the neck block. This gave the Dobro far more projection and a much bigger sound. This baffle design also helped eliminate the soundwell chamber.

Tim is no longer taking orders for his instruments as his back log grew and grew to years for those lucky few able to order one. You won't be seeing any of these anytime soon.

This particular guitar is Tim's Standard body size with a 14 3/16" lower bout, making it more compact than the larger L-bodies.  The top of this particular Scheerhorn is Sitka, the top has been stained which gives it a very unique pattern that looks astonishing. The body and fingerboard is beautifully bound with Ivoroid bindings, contrasting the dark edges of the finish quite nicely.  Chrome Schaller tuners will ensure that staying in tune is not a problem!

This 1997 Scheerhorn is in excellent condition for it's age, however it does have the usual wear you would associate with an instrument that is 15+ years old. There are some very minor scratches to the top, back, sides, and some oxidation coverplate as well as a few dings. We have done our best to capture these scratches and dings in the photographs below, in some cases, they are so slight as to not be photographed. There is a McIntyre pickup installed along with a mic, this system does require a stereo output cable. Original tweed hardshell case included.

National Triolian Polychrome with Hawaiian Scene Stencil

National Triolian Polychrome with Hawaiian Scene Stencil

In 1929, the first steel body Triolian was released as a replacement of the original wood body. The use of steel gave players much increased volume and bark - quickly becoming a favored material. It was originally offered in two finishes - a walnut sunburst and the polychrome yellow. From 1929 to 1934, many changes were made to the finish options and details. The original polychrome finished Triolians featured a hand painted Hawaiian scene stenciled on the back; with a lovely palm tree and warm, red setting sun. The stenciling work was somewhat crude and varied from guitar to guitar. Still, the polychrome finish has been sought after for years by collectors and enthusiasts alike. National Reso-Phonic has certainly done their homework, and this reissue will please any fan of the original.

The National Triolian Polychrome is built with a thin gauge steel body with a maple neck and an ebony fingerboard. The fingerboard is bound with ivoroid.  The tone is smoothed out considerably on this Triolian with lots of natural reverberation making slide passages sound especially nice and wide open.

The Bourgeois 0 Classic is a modest guitar with simplified appointments with a classic combination of tonewoods featuring an Itailian Spruce top that is paired with an extraordinary set of Indian Rosewod for the back and sides. Although this guitar has a very versatile tone that sounds great onstage or in the studio the comfort of the 0 body shape makes for the ultimate "Couch Guitar"!

This Bourgeois 0 Classic, with a custom Italian Spruce top, offers great tonal response with suburb balance. Even with a smaller 0 body size the low end is rich and balanced to the clear, distinct, and resonant highs and mids. The 0 Classic is simply and elegantly appointed with a B/W Fiber rosette, Short patterned Squares and diamonds inlay, an Ebony bridge and Fretboard, Ivoroid binding on the body and gold Waverly tuners with Ebony buttons for a classic appearance.

This particular set of Indian Rosewood is one the most unique, both in figuring and color, we have seen yet! With varying shades of red that are very rich and robust, this set of Indian Rosewood not only looks absolutely stunning.. it sounds incredible!

The Benefits of the Adirondack Bracing that Dana uses on all of his guitar can't be ignored, adding not only responsiveness, but a new level of detail and clarity. The Adirondack Bracing helps to stiffen the top, making it that much more powerful with more headroom and overall volume as well as providing a very focused tone that is only complimented by the 0's body size.

Bourgeois Vintage Varnish OM Adirondack and Mahogany

Hear This Instrument: Bourgeois Vintage Varnish Dreadnought Adirondack and Mahogany
Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
Bourgeois Vintage Varnish OM Adirondack and Mahogany

The Very Vintage series guitars from Dana Bourgeois are loaded with tone enhancing features that combine to make stellar instruments with tone that only these combined features can offer. Dana's guitars are already some of the finest made, so when you add some of these special upgrades you are truly in for something very special.

The finish is an oil varnish, which really takes the tone to another level. According to Dana, "The closest thing to the sound of a 70 year old nitrocellulose lacquer finish isn't a new lacquer finish, but a thin oil varnish finish. Properly applied, oil varnish smooths out the "jangly" sound of a new guitar in much the same way that lots of playing seems to accomplish." This makes the guitar sound more "broken in" from the start, not to mention the deep hue the varnish imparts on the finish is simply gorgeous.

Additional features include a 1 3/4" nut width, a Mammoth ivory nut, ebony bridge and pins, and hot hide glue construction.

This Vintage Varnish OM was also built with Adirondack top bracing, as are all of Dana's guitars. The Adirondack bracing was painstakingly made by hand in the old fashioned method with hot hide glue. Hide Glue sets up very hard, like glass, allowing more energy transfer through the bracing. Hot Hide Glue adds responsiveness across the spectrum. This type of glue was used on the early guitars we have all fallen in love with, but later phased out due to the time required to use it, not to mention the mess it makes. The sonic benefits can't be ignored, adding not only responsiveness, but a new level of detail and clarity. The Adirondack Bracing helps to stiffen the top, making it that much more powerful with more headroom and overall volume.

The Adirondack Top on this guitar is surprisingly responsive. The varnish finish, paired with hide glue construction, really lets this guitar vibrate differently. Even with Adi bracing, this guitar responds to the lightest bare fingered attack, making it one of the finest fingerstyle instruments to come through our shop. Those who feel Adirondack is too stiff for their playing should definitely play this guitar... it will change your entire outlook on what this powerful tonewood is capable of. Notes ring with a crisp, rich, clarity and a woodiness from the Mahogany that simply doesn't come through with other finishes... at least not right away! Pure vintage tone is available at your fingertips right now... come by the shop and see for yourself!

Collings D1G German Spruce with Mahogany Back and Sides

Hear This Instrument: Collings D1G German Spruce with Mahogany Back and Sides
Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
Collings D1G German Spruce with Mahogany Back and Sides

If there is anything the folks at Collings know, and they know quite a lot - it is dreadnoughts. While Collings is certainly not the first to build them, they bring a new tonal clarity to the depth and warmth usually associated with such a large, deep-bodied guitar. The bass response makes the dreadnought ideal for vocal accompaniment, however, Collings D1 Series Mahogany dreads are employed by some of the busiest bluegrass flatpickers in the business, such as Andy Falco of the Stringdusters and Adam Aijala of Yonder Mountain String Band.

This particular Collings D1 features a custom German Spruce top. German Spruce with it's high headroom, and complex lush bass, mixed with a clear, bell-like high end is the perfect compliment to the Mahogany Back and Sides. Chord accompaniment is full and crisp, and single note lines jump out at you. Rhythm players will appreciate that the German top allows a heavier hand than Sitka, yet sounds a bit more like old Adirondack. German spruce offers both a quicker string attack, quicker decay, as well as slightly less lingering overtones - which can be a bit pesky depending upon your playing needs.

This instrument also features Adirondack Bracing. The Adi bracing tends to stiffen the German Spruce top and make it that much more powerful, with a slightly quicker attack. Another custom feature on this Collings D1 is a 1 3/4" nut width for those who prefer a bit wider neck.

National NRP Tricone Black Rust

National NRP Tricone Black Rust

This National NRP Tricone features National's "Black Rust" finish. This is a very unique looking finish and has become a shop favorite. Our customers have really gravitated towards this muted, vintage looking finish. The Black Rust finish looks like it just came out of the swamp, perfectly suited for those hot southern blues licks. Nationals have been played by many blues legends, but they definitely were not playing one with a finish like this. No two of the Black Rust finishes are alike. The best part is, you don't have to wait 50 years for a vintage finish, you can have one right now!

The Tricone design was originated in the 1920's and was based on the same principle as the mica disc on a Victrola. The designers settle on a very thin, conical shaped aluminum resonator design, used in a set of three connected with a T-bar inside an all metal body. Three were used due to the mellowed sound and increased sustain it produced, as opposed to using one large cone which was louder, but brighter in tone.

Pre-Owned: 2011 Bourgeois Country Boy Deluxe Adirondack Spruce and Figured Mahogany

Hear This Instrument: Country Boy Deluxe
Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
2011 Bourgeois Country Boy Deluxe Adirondack Spruce and Figured Mahogany

Dana Bourgeois is known around the world for his superb craftsmanship and also as one of the foremost authorities on the voicing, selection and utilization of fine tonewoods. As testimony to these great instruments, they have become a favorite of many professional country and bluegrass players, such as Ricky Skaggs, Bryan Sutton, Sean Watkins, and most recently, we sold a Country Boy to Michael Harris of Apache Relay. If there is one thing Dana Bourgeois knows, it’s building a knockout dreadnought.

The Country Boy is a dependable, tried and true mahogany workhorse. Mahogany has a quick velocity of sound, relatively lightness of weight, and noticeable midrange overtone attenuation. As a result, mahogany guitars are warm, dry, woody, direct, lively, and famously easy to record. This is especially true with this guitar.  Each note has commanding presence, yet is balanced and well represented. Chords ring with powerful, driving volume and lead notes are clear, punchy, and distinct.

This Bourgeois Country Boy Deluxe features classic appointments such as ebony fretboard and bridge, wooden rosette, Ziricote binding, and Gold Waverly tuners. This guitar also features the same diamond volute used on the back of their Vintage Dreadnought peghead. In addition to selecting only the finest quartersawn and matched figured mahogany backs and sides, this Country Boy is appointed with a beautiful Adirondack Red Spruce with nice wide grain at the edges.  Dana always builds guitars with only the best tonewoods, and this guitar is definitely worthy of the Bourgeois name... in both tone and appearance!

This 2011 Country Boy Deluxe is in absolute pristine condition and is hard to distinguish used from new. Original Hardshell Case included.

Santa Cruz OM/PW (Pre-War) German Spruce and Indian Rosewood with Hot Hide Glue

Hear This Instrument: Santa Cruz OM/PW BearClaw Sitka and Indian Rosewood with Hot Hide Glue Bracing
Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
Santa Cruz OM/PW (Pre-War) German Spruce and Indian Rosewood with Hot Hide Glue

In the 1920's, the Orchestra Model was originally intended to be a large guitar capable of being heard over other orchestral instruments, hence the OM name. Although it fit the bill, its relatively large body was soon eclipsed by the mighty dreadnought. Fortunately, the OM had secured its place in history as a powerful and versatile voice for public performance. Santa Cruz was among the first modern builders to reintroduce this now smaller bodied favorite at the beginning of the Eighties. Their practice of combining the most desirable attributes of old and new, rather than copying, made for a very successful introduction of the Santa Cruz Guitar Company to a whole new audience.

This custom Santa Cruz OM/PW features a German Spruce top paired with Indian Rosewood back and sides.  The German Spruce is instantly responsive with lots of overtones.  German is one very versatile for many players, offering more stiffness, and therefore more power, than a Sitka Spruce top can provide.

The OM Pre-War Model is designed with many of the features in bracing and tone that the emerging singer-songwriter, the working musician, or a serious amateur will find desirable at a price before unheard of in guitars of this caliber.

This Santa Cruz OM Pre-War also features Hot Hide Glue Construction with Adirondack Spruce bracing.

Pre-Owned: 2009 Yamaha “The FG” Limited Edition #27 of 40

2009 Yamaha

Yamaha's Limited Edition FG acoustic guitar features a solid Sitka spruce top and solid mahogany back and sides for a warm, vibrant tone. The guitar also boasts an Indian rosewood fingerboard, bridge, and binding, and original FG open-style tuners. The Limited Edition FG is handcrafted in Japan and production will be extremely limited—only 40 of these beauties are being made, this is the 27th guitar of the series.

Being hand-made in Japan, this is a very capable dreadnought... even in our store full of "grails," this instrument can hold it's own in any jam session.  It has a rich, woody tone and ample volume, very surprising for a guitar in this price range.   The sitka spruce top is very responsive and feels as if it is already "broken in."  The mahogany back and sides keep lead notes crisp and defined with exceptional balance.  Yamaha has definitely done something right here!

This 2009 Yamaha is in absolute pristine condition and is in like new condition. There are no scratches, dents, or fretwear to note. Original Hardshell Case included.
