Pre-Owned: 2011 Trussart Deluxe Steelcaster

2011 Trussart Deluxe Steelcaster

2011 Trussart Deluxe Steelcaster

James Trussart is famed for making guitars that combine the feel of a traditional electric guitar with the radical looks of a body made entirely out of steel.  A musician-turned-luthier, the Parisian native began his career as a fiddler, accompanying Cajun singer-songwriter Zachary Richard in the late 70's, befor turning his attention to crafting violins and later guitars in 1980.

Trussart's creations are designed to have the look and feel of a vintage instrument with the added appeal of a metal construction. His "Rust-o-matic" technique (a term coined by Billy Gibbons regarding Trussart's unique finishes) involves leaving the guitar body exposed to the elements for several weeks, allowing it to corrode before treating it to stop the corrosion. He then sands it to replicate years of distress, and then finishes it with a clear satin coat.

Equally at home being played on stage or on display as a piece of art, you will know you have something special the moment you lay your hands on this 2011 Trussart Steelcaster Deluxe. The Deluxe Steelcaster has the look and feel of a vintage instrument while also featuring exclusive hollow steel body and custom metal appointments. The steel while also being the perfect medium to display the beautiful Trussart custom finishes also has tonal advantages.

The Trussart Deluxe Steelcaster tone is a uniquely annunciated sound that, combined with the resonant qualities of the hollow steel body can range from sweet, crystal clear tones to aggressigve screaming lead tones. The construction of these instruments is only half of the story, the other half is the finish, every instrument comes with a history and a slight element of neglect, of decay, so it has a personality of it’s own.

The Trussart Steelcaster Deluxe has found it’s way into the hands of many guitarists including Billy Gibbons, Robert Cray, Tom Morello (Rage against the Machine, Audioslave), Billy Corgan (Smashing Pumpkins), Pearl Jam, Marc Ribot, Metallica and Joe Perry, to name only a few.

The custom appointments to this guitar include the Bigsby 15 Tremelo. The Gretsch Company offer the Bigsby True Vibrato tailpiece, the first successful design of what is now called a whammy bar or tremolo arm. Created in the 1940s by inventor Paul A. Bigsby, Bigsby Vibrato tailpieces continue to be made today using original designs, molds, and methods.

All wear to this 2011 Trussart Deluxe Steelcaster looks like it is original to how it left the factory, it is a very cool instrument that sounds as unique as it looks. Original G and C Hardshell Case Included.

Pre-Owned: 2009 Collings City Limits Jazz Amber Burst

2009 Collings City Limits Jazz Amber Burst

2009 Collings City Limits Jazz Amber Burst

Thin, light, and exquisite, the Collings City Limits Jazz commands attention. Built with a fully hollow one-piece mahogany body, carved European spruce top, and modern stylings, this sleek thin-bodied archtop is made for jazz.

Collings achieves unmatched tone and response out of this archtop with the use of innovative bracing patterns.  The carved European Spruce top is cross braced on the inside, much like a flat-top, as opposed to bar bracing, which is traditional for archtops.  Each brace must be carved to match the inside of the arch.  Bill wanted a more dynamic flat-top response and he has certainly met his goal with the City Limits Jazz.

The pickup incorporated into this 2009 Collins City Limits Jazz guitar is a Kent Armstrong.   The pickup is mounted to the pickguard and floats beautifully at the base of the fretboard.  Discreet volume and tone controls are found on the bottom edge of the pickguard so that they don't detract from the ultra-clean lines of such a beautiful guitar.

The name Kent Armstrong has long been associated with the finest pickups available for jazz guitar. Kent has a virtual monopoly on the jazz guitar market, and currently produces pickups for nearly every builder and manufacturer of jazz guitars worldwide, including Stromberg Guitars, Eastman Strings, D'Angelico, Buscarino, Larkin, Hofner, Mortoro, Timtone, DeCava, etc.

This 2009 City Limits Jazz guitar is in excellent + condition with only 3 small impressions in the back of the neck close to the body joint  which are barely visible and do not extend through the finish. Additionally, one small ding in the purfling, bottom bout, treble side near the input jack. The Original hardshell case included.

Collings SoCo 16 LC Tobacco Sunburst

Collings SoCo 16 LC Tobacco Sunburst

Collings SoCo 16 LC Tobacco Sunburst

Bill Collings' and his shop in Austin, Texas has been building some of the finest acoustic guitars for decades and has recently turned his attention to electric guitars. The result has been nothing short of astonishing. He has reinvigorated the industry with his take on classic design. Named afer Austin's funky and eclectic South Congress Avenue, the SoCo  is all about attitude. This model brings in elements from both the I-35 and CL models to create a unique hybrid that is all its own. Who says you can't have your cake and eat it too?

Since Collings moved into the electric arena in 2006, Bill has had an interest in the role that laminate woods play in the tone of classic semi-hollow electrics and jazz guitars, and it was only a matter of time before he delved into a new variation.  After much research and experimentation, and a few dissected classic guitars later... they are ready to introduce this exciting new line of electric guitars.

As the latest addition to the SoCo series, the semi-hollow SoCo 16 LC features high quality laminate construction and a larger 16" body size. Built with vintage tone in mind, the larger single cutaway design and laminate materials provide an even and focused tonal response with added warmth for single-line soloing. This Collings SoCo16 model features a flared headstock and is finished off with a gorgeous Tobacco Sun Burst finish.

Compared to the solid wood semi-hollow models, the laminate construction sends more controlled information to the pickups, allowing Collings to use higher output electronics.  These guitars feature the standard Lollar Imperials, as opposed to the low-wind Imperials used in the other Collings models. This creates tone that is evenly balanced with the smooth response that many players look for in arched top electric guitars.  We wouldn't describe the tone of the laminate guitars as being better or worse than the solid equivalent.  Instead, they should be viewed as two different guitars with two different sets of tonal characteristics.

Collings collaborates with Jason Lollar for all their pickup designs. While the particular pickups they use are specially wound to Collings specifications, they are very near in design to the Lollar standard Imperial Humbucking models. Lollar manages to capture the airy top end, tight lows, balanced midrange, and complex overtones of the best original PAF pickups.

Pre-Owned: 2005 G and L Comanche

2005 G and L Comanche

2005 G and L Comanche

Leo Fender† passed away on a rainy day in March of 1991, an event which shook the Music World: The father of modern music was gone. It was on that very day that Leo had completed his last prototype instrument, after which he declared to his wife Phyllis that he had given all he can to the musicians of the world. Before his passing, he wanted to be sure that the legacy of G&L would continue to shine even brighter in the future. He knew that he must look after the people of G&L, his family, so that they would remain secure and free to continue building the finest guitars and basses in the world.

Today the G&L factory continues production as Leo would have wanted. His private workshop, the center of his creativity, remains untouched as it was on his last day and has been visited by music people from around the world. While the people of G&L, his people, continue to build the instruments with love, dedication and great skill.

The 2005 G and L Comanche is a superbly executed super-Strat. A versatile instrument and a perfect choice for a session or casuals player who prefers to schlep just one axe. The Comanche is incredibly well-made. The detail work is superb, the nut and neck joint are airtight, and the finish is mirror perfect. The sleek, shallow neck is exquisite, and the jumbo frets are immaculately set and rounded. The feel is creamy and consistent. The non-locking arrived superbly set up with two springs. The trem arm pushes snugly into its socket without screwing or locking, and stays put until you tough it. The entire assembly is light, accurate, and super-responsive.

Ingenious wiring enhances the Comanche’s flexibility. Along with a 5-way pickup selector, there’s also a toggle switch that lets you choose all three pickups at once, or the outside two together. Even cooler are the pair of global, passive treble and bass controls. The bass knob is especially handy for nudging the hefty Z pickups toward vintage Strat tones, and the treble control is great for dialing in smoky, jazz-approved colors. The Comanche delivers a surprisingly good faux-archtop vibe. The flexible and intuitive controls make it easy to dial in just the right shading.

The tones live up to the craftsmanship. They are ringy and rich, with lots of top-end airiness. At the same time, they deliver a low-end impact that far exceeds a traditional Strat’s. As on an ASAT, you get the graininess and acoustic-like complexity of a vintage Fender, but with greater power and an expanded frequency range.

National ResoLectric Biscayne Blue with a Lollar P90

National ResoLectric Biscayne Blue with a Lollar P90

National ResoLectric Biscayne Blue with a Lollar P90

From time to time we are privileged to receive custom or "One-Off" instruments from National ResoPhonic, and every single time we are simply blown away with their quality and choice of appointments, or in this case the Finish! When we first opened the case of this Custom ResoLectric we were mesmerized by the very mellow yet hypnotic Biscayne Blue finish. To compliment the finish National also finished the headstock in Biscayne Blue which we believe compliments the finish perfectly. We have seen many of the standard burst Resolectric's and Revolver's here in our shop and would have never thought about this guitar in blue, but we are incredibly pleased to have this unique guitar in the shop and hope to see more like it in the future! Biscayne Blue, for you classic car aficionados, was part of the paint line up for the 1954 Chevy line up, and as you can see, is a gorgeous shade of deep, almost iridescent blue.

The ResoLectric has gone through a few changes in its 19 years of production. The current model uses an audiophile-quality Highlander preamp to mix both the magnetic and piezoelectric pickups. A Jason Lollar P-90 pickup sits in the neck position, and a Highlander piezo transducer is fitted under the saddle. The output of each pickup is controlled by independent volume knobs, with a master volume knob to control the instruments overall output level. A 3-way toggle switch selects which pickups are active. The solid mahogany body is capped with a figured maple top bound in ivoroid and finished off with a  gorgeous pearloid pickguard. The figured maple neck clears 14 frets to the body, highlighted with a diamond inlaid, rosewood fretboard.

The Lollar P90 in the neck has a fat, singing lead voice that is perfectly suited for slide players looking for the ultimate in classic Electric blues tones. The Piezo sounds like an acoustic national, only perfectly amplified. You have a myriad of tones at your fingertips, which makes it easy to switch between a preset rhythm and lead sounds. I do believe I'll dust my broom!

Pre-Owned: 1976 Ibanez 2461 NT

1976 Ibanez 2461 NT

Pre-Owned: Ibanez 2461 NT

Hoshino Gakki started as a bookstore company in 1908, and began importing guitars under the Salvador Ibanez name in 1929. Hoshino bought the Ibanez company name and started making guitars themselves in 1935. In the 1970's American guitar manufacturers were making poorer and poorer versions of their mainstay guitars, so Ibanez jumped in and started "copying" famous brand looks at a budget price. These copies were so good that Gibson sued the Hoshino company and now the Japanese guitars of this era are called the "lawsuit" guitars. If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, consider this guitar a valentine to the Gibson Guitar Company. In the early 70's Ibanez set out to make high-precision replicas of Gibson's top-end instruments. So successful were they that Gibson sued to stop production, which was subsequently halted under court order.

This model was manufactured from 1975 through 1977. It is closely modeled after a Gibson Johnny Smith model with the exception of the top of the peghead and the peghead inlay, however, it features laminated wood body construction, rather than solid construction as on a Gibson and the neck lamination is also different from a Gibson.

The tone of this instrument is absolutely phenomenal! We plugged this one into a Carr Rambler, and was instantly able to conjure sounds like; Jim Hall, Johnny Smith, Wes, Kenny Burrell, Herb Ellis, you name it, this one can do it. This instrument has numerous scratches throughout as you would expect from an instrument from this era, all are indicated in the pictures below. Additionally, it has belt rash on the back and top as well as minor fretwear on the B and High E in the first and second position. The finish is peeling around the tuners. We believe the original pickguard was changed from dual pickup to single pickup configuration. Includes a non original hardshell case. This instrument has been inspected and verified by our good friends at Gruhn Guitars. Please Click Here for the full Gruhn report.

Collings 290 DC S Double Cutaway Crimson

Collings 290 DC S Double Cutaway Crimson

This guitar was selected by Premier Guitar Magazine for their editorial review just after the Collings 290 DCs (Double cutaway) was introduced, October 2011 issue. They played it, wrote their review, then returned it to our friends at Collings for a fresh coat of strings, wax, and final QC before shipping out to us in April. Here is an excerpt of the review that was featured in Premiere Guitar, to read the full review click the link below.

"This is a Collings through-and-through—a guitar that significantly refines one of the most elegantly simple templates in electric-guitar history.

Gather a gaggle of tone nerds around a great guitar long enough and inevitably the talk turns to magic, mojo, and other strains of pseudoscience—almost as if there were some robed and gray-bearded sorcerer behind it all. Yes, sometimes there is something beautiful about the sound and feel of a 50-year-old Telecaster that you can’t quite put into words. More often than not, though, an extraordinary guitar is the product of a luthier’s uncompromising standards, and hands and minds that consider anything less than perfection an affront to the art.

Bill Collings would probably be the first to admit that striving for absolute perfection in luthiery is a little like tilting at windmills. But his refusal to make anything but the best guitar he and his staff can build is what makes the instruments that bear his name among the most revered in the business. And though Collings’ acoustic guitars, which are treasured by players from Pete Townshend to Lyle Lovett and David Grisman, remain the company’s focus, Collings electrics are equally amazing instruments—and they’re still subject to Bill Collings eagle-eyed scrutiny.

The 290 DC S is one of the newest members of the Collings electric family. But don’t let the dead simple Les Paul Jr. lines and bare bones visage fool you into thinking this is some kind of exercise in mass-market efficiency. This is a Collings through-and-through—a guitar that significantly refines one of the most elegantly simple templates in electric-guitar history.

More Than Meets the Eye
There’s no disguising that Bill Collings looked to the double-cutaway Gibson Les Paul Jr. as inspiration for the 290 DC S. And just as he saw the simplicity of mid-century Martins as a perfect place of departure for his first acoustic designs, Gibson’s once-budget-branded Les Paul Jr. is the ideal vehicle for Collings design optimization talents.

The gorgeous cherry-hued, nitrocellulose lacquer-finished body is a single piece of beautiful mahogany—a formula for sweet resonance if there ever was one. But where the Les Paul Jr. is primarily a slab of right angles, the 290 DC S is contoured more like a Stratocaster—with a subtle body contour on the upper bass bout and a more severe taper on the back of the upper bass bout where an old Junior would leave your ribs bruised after a few Saturday night sets. There’s also a deep cutaway at the waist on the back of the guitar, as well as a gentle taper on the treble side of the neck heel that gives you a little extra access to the upper frets. This is a comfortable and well-balanced guitar.

The mahogany neck itself, which is topped by an East Indian rosewood fretboard and ebony peghead cap, is a remarkable piece of work by itself. Collings insists that a fairly substantial mass in the neck is essential to making an electric guitar work harmonically. But the balance Collings strikes between heft and comfort on the 290 DC S is remarkable. There’s a lot to hold onto for big blues bends, and the extra substance offers an ideal resistance to gentle neck flexing that’s great for subtle vibrato effects. The 12" fretboard radius has a sweet Gibson-style contour that’s good for chording or bending, though Collings deviates from tradition just a little by using a 24 7/8" scale.

Collings’ custom wraparound bridge is beautifully milled and pre-intonated at the factory, though players who use gauges lighter than .010s (the company recommends .011s) may encounter some intonation issues. Elsewhere on the guitar, the minimal hardware is similarly top-shelf. Tuners are Gotoh SG301s, while the lone pickup on the 290 DC S is a Lollar P-90 with Collings-made Bakelite covers."

Collings 290 Vintage White Single Lollar Dog Ear P90

Collings 290 Vintage White Single Lollar Dog Ear P90

Bill Collings is admittedly building some of the finest acoustic guitars that have ever been built. When he decided to take on the challenge of building electric guitars, at the onset, this may have seemed an easier task. After all, electric guitars have no bracing, no acoustic waves to study, and acoustic players are known to be a finicky bunch when compared to our electric brethren. Well, 70 prototypes and a year later, he felt he had finally formulated the electric guitar he would want to build. In the process he conceptualized the iconic electric guitar in a new light, developing a new standard for fit, finish, innovation, and most importantly tone!

The Body is crafted from select piece of dense mahogany that has two well thought out ergonomic cuts on the back of the guitar, one for the area where the guitar rests & conforms to your ribcage (in the waist of the body), and the other in the lower bout to accommodate resting on your knee when sitting down. The leg cutout makes practicing or doing a session easy as it conforms to your leg, and the other, makes standing and playing a gig a pleasure as the guitar fits comfortably against your body.

The Neck joint has been uniquely designed to join the body at an angle, allowing easier access to the upper frets. The neck joins at the 17th fret on the bass side, & at the 19th fret on the treble side. The neck is also crafted from select Mahogany that was typically used on the what today is considered investment grade instruments of the 50’s and 60’s. This dense mahogany offers more mass, more rigidity & continuity from neck through the body. It responds better than any guitar you have may have ever played, and is extremely well balanced in your hands.

We are truly amazed by what this single pickup guitar has to offer! It is capable of producing a vast array of tones, from pristine clean tones rich with harmonic complexity to hard-hitting vintage rock tones with enough focused growl to cut through any mix. Dial back the volume and tone, and you'll be surprised by the smooth, mellow tones that are available without ever getting muddy. The lollar pickup has a fat P-90 tone with a smooth treble response, having more of a vintage sound, rather than a new pickup that sounds hard or harsh. Overall tone is brighter with less of a grind to the distortion quality and is slower to overdrive an amp than a standard P-90 set.  This instrument will put tone back in the hands of the player, not in the hands of effect pedals or multi-channel amps.

Collings City Limits Deluxe Quilt Top Amber Sunburst

Hear This Instrument: Collings City Limits Deluxe Quilt Top Amber Sunburst
Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
Collings City Limits Deluxe Quilt Top Amber Sunburst

Bill Collings has been making some of the most highly regarded acoustic guitars in the world for quite some time, so when he decided to build electric guitars, musicians were chomping at the bit to see what would happen. The flawless construction, the incredible attention to detail, and the Collings quality are all here. Collings has redesigned a classic guitar with players in mind and the now famous meticulous construction, and attention to detail is nothing short of astonishing. This City Limits Deluxe with Flamed Maple top, is the ultimate Les Paul and with Lollar Humbuckers, this guitar was born for rock and roll!

From Collings' website: "Crafted with the finest seasoned maple and mahogany, the CL Deluxe is built for tone. Lightweight, resonant mahogany combined with a carefully hand-set mortise and tenon neck joint bring tonal complexity and sustain to the table in spades. Sleekly contoured for comfort and style, we've brought new life to an American classic." We, honestly, could not agree more. The CL Deluxe is clearly influenced by classic American solidbodies of the past, and to say they hit their mark is an understatement.

The body is cleverly designed with ergonomic contouring at both sides of the waist. This commonly overlooked feature is quite brilliant, making already effortless playability even more comfortable. Weighing in at a just over 8 lb., the CL Deluxe is easy to manage and perfectly balanced. Whether on the stage or in the studio, the CL Deluxe feels right at home. The neck profile is a well rounded C shape that is unique to the Collings lineup. The neck joint is angled toward the cutaway; following the body lines. This slight change fills your hand in a more natural way, easing the curse that other single cutaway guitars have. Playability is what we have come to expect from a Collings - effortless and untroubled up and down the fingerboard. Combine that with Collings reputation for intonation perfection - and you have a force to be reckoned with.

Collings has collaborated with Jason Lollar for all their pickups. While the particular pickups they use are specially wound for Collings, they are darn close to his standard Imperial Humbuckers. Lollar manages to capture the airy top end, tight lows, balanced midrange, and complex overtones of the best original PAF pickups. In reviews they are consistently given high marks for their balanced frequency response. Unbalanced coils keep the bottom end tight for the amount of fullness the pickups have, overtones build after each note is played. Alnico 5 magnets are de-gaussed to specific levels, unique to the neck and bridge positions. The sound Collings has developed with these pickups can certainly be described as mature. The neck position pushes out a lovely warmth and depth - ideal for jazz chording or chunky blues. None of the pesky midrange honkiness that can be found with bridge humbuckers is present. The bridge pickup is certainly hotter and more aggressive, but maintains full-bodied presence without any harshness. Use of the individual volume and tone knobs to balance and pair the two pickups against one another yields a practically endless variety of voices and tones.

Collings is renowned for their nitro finishes on acoustic guitars - and the story remains the same here. The finish on the CL Deluxe is nothing short of perfect - incredibly thin and flat as can be. The thin nitro finish allows this guitar to breathe and resonate like the aged vintage pieces of old. The unplugged acoustic qualities the CL Deluxe exhibits are simply remarkable. It's the little considerations like this that will satisfy even the most discerning of vintage fans. The beautiful flamed maple top is hand-sprayed with a flawless amber sunburst, giving it an instant classic look. Aesthetic balance is a bit of a passion for Mr. Bill Collings, and each of his electrics exhibit their own understated style - unique from model to model. The fit and finish of the CL Deluxe may be astonishing to some - but it is what we have come to expect from the folks at Collings. No detail is left incomplete, yet nothing is overdone or exploited. The body is bound with grained ivoroid, a refreshing change from blindingly stark white plastic. The truss rod cover, tuning buttons, pickup knobs and covers all share this same material - and its one of the many features that set Collings apart.
