Browsing Collings Electrics

Collings Electric Guitars were born after thirty two years of building acoustic instruments, when Bill decided to build Electric Guitars. It was a surprise to us all, but I suppose it was just an extension of his love for carving tops. Bill started building archtop guitars in the 80′s and expanded to mandolins in 1999. In a way, it’s a natural progression. Collings electric guitars are built with the finest materials available and feature custom pickups from Jason Lollar. A number of custom options are available for each model. You can browse our inventory below or call us to inquire about a special order.

Collings 290 DC S Double Cutaway Crimson

Collings 290 DC S Double Cutaway Crimson

This guitar was selected by Premier Guitar Magazine for their editorial review just after the Collings 290 DCs (Double cutaway) was introduced, October 2011 issue. They played it, wrote their review, then returned it to our friends at Collings for a fresh coat of strings, wax, and final QC before shipping out to us in April. Here is an excerpt of the review that was featured in Premiere Guitar, to read the full review click the link below.

"This is a Collings through-and-through—a guitar that significantly refines one of the most elegantly simple templates in electric-guitar history.

Gather a gaggle of tone nerds around a great guitar long enough and inevitably the talk turns to magic, mojo, and other strains of pseudoscience—almost as if there were some robed and gray-bearded sorcerer behind it all. Yes, sometimes there is something beautiful about the sound and feel of a 50-year-old Telecaster that you can’t quite put into words. More often than not, though, an extraordinary guitar is the product of a luthier’s uncompromising standards, and hands and minds that consider anything less than perfection an affront to the art.

Bill Collings would probably be the first to admit that striving for absolute perfection in luthiery is a little like tilting at windmills. But his refusal to make anything but the best guitar he and his staff can build is what makes the instruments that bear his name among the most revered in the business. And though Collings’ acoustic guitars, which are treasured by players from Pete Townshend to Lyle Lovett and David Grisman, remain the company’s focus, Collings electrics are equally amazing instruments—and they’re still subject to Bill Collings eagle-eyed scrutiny.

The 290 DC S is one of the newest members of the Collings electric family. But don’t let the dead simple Les Paul Jr. lines and bare bones visage fool you into thinking this is some kind of exercise in mass-market efficiency. This is a Collings through-and-through—a guitar that significantly refines one of the most elegantly simple templates in electric-guitar history.

More Than Meets the Eye
There’s no disguising that Bill Collings looked to the double-cutaway Gibson Les Paul Jr. as inspiration for the 290 DC S. And just as he saw the simplicity of mid-century Martins as a perfect place of departure for his first acoustic designs, Gibson’s once-budget-branded Les Paul Jr. is the ideal vehicle for Collings design optimization talents.

The gorgeous cherry-hued, nitrocellulose lacquer-finished body is a single piece of beautiful mahogany—a formula for sweet resonance if there ever was one. But where the Les Paul Jr. is primarily a slab of right angles, the 290 DC S is contoured more like a Stratocaster—with a subtle body contour on the upper bass bout and a more severe taper on the back of the upper bass bout where an old Junior would leave your ribs bruised after a few Saturday night sets. There’s also a deep cutaway at the waist on the back of the guitar, as well as a gentle taper on the treble side of the neck heel that gives you a little extra access to the upper frets. This is a comfortable and well-balanced guitar.

The mahogany neck itself, which is topped by an East Indian rosewood fretboard and ebony peghead cap, is a remarkable piece of work by itself. Collings insists that a fairly substantial mass in the neck is essential to making an electric guitar work harmonically. But the balance Collings strikes between heft and comfort on the 290 DC S is remarkable. There’s a lot to hold onto for big blues bends, and the extra substance offers an ideal resistance to gentle neck flexing that’s great for subtle vibrato effects. The 12" fretboard radius has a sweet Gibson-style contour that’s good for chording or bending, though Collings deviates from tradition just a little by using a 24 7/8" scale.

Collings’ custom wraparound bridge is beautifully milled and pre-intonated at the factory, though players who use gauges lighter than .010s (the company recommends .011s) may encounter some intonation issues. Elsewhere on the guitar, the minimal hardware is similarly top-shelf. Tuners are Gotoh SG301s, while the lone pickup on the 290 DC S is a Lollar P-90 with Collings-made Bakelite covers."

Collings 290 Vintage White Single Lollar Dog Ear P90

Collings 290 Vintage White Single Lollar Dog Ear P90

Bill Collings is admittedly building some of the finest acoustic guitars that have ever been built. When he decided to take on the challenge of building electric guitars, at the onset, this may have seemed an easier task. After all, electric guitars have no bracing, no acoustic waves to study, and acoustic players are known to be a finicky bunch when compared to our electric brethren. Well, 70 prototypes and a year later, he felt he had finally formulated the electric guitar he would want to build. In the process he conceptualized the iconic electric guitar in a new light, developing a new standard for fit, finish, innovation, and most importantly tone!

The Body is crafted from select piece of dense mahogany that has two well thought out ergonomic cuts on the back of the guitar, one for the area where the guitar rests & conforms to your ribcage (in the waist of the body), and the other in the lower bout to accommodate resting on your knee when sitting down. The leg cutout makes practicing or doing a session easy as it conforms to your leg, and the other, makes standing and playing a gig a pleasure as the guitar fits comfortably against your body.

The Neck joint has been uniquely designed to join the body at an angle, allowing easier access to the upper frets. The neck joins at the 17th fret on the bass side, & at the 19th fret on the treble side. The neck is also crafted from select Mahogany that was typically used on the what today is considered investment grade instruments of the 50’s and 60’s. This dense mahogany offers more mass, more rigidity & continuity from neck through the body. It responds better than any guitar you have may have ever played, and is extremely well balanced in your hands.

We are truly amazed by what this single pickup guitar has to offer! It is capable of producing a vast array of tones, from pristine clean tones rich with harmonic complexity to hard-hitting vintage rock tones with enough focused growl to cut through any mix. Dial back the volume and tone, and you'll be surprised by the smooth, mellow tones that are available without ever getting muddy. The lollar pickup has a fat P-90 tone with a smooth treble response, having more of a vintage sound, rather than a new pickup that sounds hard or harsh. Overall tone is brighter with less of a grind to the distortion quality and is slower to overdrive an amp than a standard P-90 set.  This instrument will put tone back in the hands of the player, not in the hands of effect pedals or multi-channel amps.

Collings City Limits Deluxe Quilt Top Amber Sunburst

Hear This Instrument: Collings City Limits Deluxe Quilt Top Amber Sunburst
Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
Collings City Limits Deluxe Quilt Top Amber Sunburst

Bill Collings has been making some of the most highly regarded acoustic guitars in the world for quite some time, so when he decided to build electric guitars, musicians were chomping at the bit to see what would happen. The flawless construction, the incredible attention to detail, and the Collings quality are all here. Collings has redesigned a classic guitar with players in mind and the now famous meticulous construction, and attention to detail is nothing short of astonishing. This City Limits Deluxe with Flamed Maple top, is the ultimate Les Paul and with Lollar Humbuckers, this guitar was born for rock and roll!

From Collings' website: "Crafted with the finest seasoned maple and mahogany, the CL Deluxe is built for tone. Lightweight, resonant mahogany combined with a carefully hand-set mortise and tenon neck joint bring tonal complexity and sustain to the table in spades. Sleekly contoured for comfort and style, we've brought new life to an American classic." We, honestly, could not agree more. The CL Deluxe is clearly influenced by classic American solidbodies of the past, and to say they hit their mark is an understatement.

The body is cleverly designed with ergonomic contouring at both sides of the waist. This commonly overlooked feature is quite brilliant, making already effortless playability even more comfortable. Weighing in at a just over 8 lb., the CL Deluxe is easy to manage and perfectly balanced. Whether on the stage or in the studio, the CL Deluxe feels right at home. The neck profile is a well rounded C shape that is unique to the Collings lineup. The neck joint is angled toward the cutaway; following the body lines. This slight change fills your hand in a more natural way, easing the curse that other single cutaway guitars have. Playability is what we have come to expect from a Collings - effortless and untroubled up and down the fingerboard. Combine that with Collings reputation for intonation perfection - and you have a force to be reckoned with.

Collings has collaborated with Jason Lollar for all their pickups. While the particular pickups they use are specially wound for Collings, they are darn close to his standard Imperial Humbuckers. Lollar manages to capture the airy top end, tight lows, balanced midrange, and complex overtones of the best original PAF pickups. In reviews they are consistently given high marks for their balanced frequency response. Unbalanced coils keep the bottom end tight for the amount of fullness the pickups have, overtones build after each note is played. Alnico 5 magnets are de-gaussed to specific levels, unique to the neck and bridge positions. The sound Collings has developed with these pickups can certainly be described as mature. The neck position pushes out a lovely warmth and depth - ideal for jazz chording or chunky blues. None of the pesky midrange honkiness that can be found with bridge humbuckers is present. The bridge pickup is certainly hotter and more aggressive, but maintains full-bodied presence without any harshness. Use of the individual volume and tone knobs to balance and pair the two pickups against one another yields a practically endless variety of voices and tones.

Collings is renowned for their nitro finishes on acoustic guitars - and the story remains the same here. The finish on the CL Deluxe is nothing short of perfect - incredibly thin and flat as can be. The thin nitro finish allows this guitar to breathe and resonate like the aged vintage pieces of old. The unplugged acoustic qualities the CL Deluxe exhibits are simply remarkable. It's the little considerations like this that will satisfy even the most discerning of vintage fans. The beautiful flamed maple top is hand-sprayed with a flawless amber sunburst, giving it an instant classic look. Aesthetic balance is a bit of a passion for Mr. Bill Collings, and each of his electrics exhibit their own understated style - unique from model to model. The fit and finish of the CL Deluxe may be astonishing to some - but it is what we have come to expect from the folks at Collings. No detail is left incomplete, yet nothing is overdone or exploited. The body is bound with grained ivoroid, a refreshing change from blindingly stark white plastic. The truss rod cover, tuning buttons, pickup knobs and covers all share this same material - and its one of the many features that set Collings apart.

Collings I-35 Deluxe Custom Dark Cherry

Collings I-35 Deluxe Custom Dark Cherry

Bill Collings' and his shop in Austin, Texas has been building some of the finest acoustic guitars for decades and has recently turned his attention to electric guitars. The result has been nothing short of astonishing. He has reinvigorated the industry with his take on classic design. The Collings I-35 is their reinterpretation of the semi-hollow body, two-pickup guitar.

While the rest of the industry at large uses pressed plywood for their backs, and bent sides, Collings carves the back and sides from one single slab of Mahogany. This preserves the "look" of a semi-hollow bodied guitar while providing noticeable sonic differences to the player's ears. The top is carved from a  mineral flamed piece of book matched maple. This not only looks more like the "original" late 50's and early 60's instruments, but more importantly, sounds like an older guitar.

Collings collaborates with Jason Lollar for all their pickup designs. While the particular pickups they use are specially wound to Collings specifications, they are very near in design to the Lollar standard Imperial Humbucking models. Lollar manages to capture the airy top end, tight lows, balanced midrange, and complex overtones of the best original PAF pickups.

In reviews, they are consistently given high marks for their balanced frequency response. Unbalanced coils keep the bottom end tight for the intense richness the pickups provide, as overtones build after each note is played. Alnico 5 magnets are de-gaussed to specific levels, unique to the neck and bridge positions.

The sound Collings has developed with these pickups can certainly be described as mature. The neck position pushes out a lovely warmth and depth – ideal for jazz chording or chunky blues. None of the pesky midrange honkiness that can be found with bridge humbuckers is present. The bridge pickup is certainly hotter and more aggressive, but maintains full-bodied presence without any harshness. One reviewer had this to say about the pickups, "As they're pushed, they react with a smooth compression without becoming excessively bright."

The mahogany neck is superior quality wood and topped off with a Rosewood Fretboard with vintage style "dot" inlays. The profile is a comfortable "C" shape with rounded edges, giving it a wonderful, broken in feel. Leaving no detail untouched, the bridge and tailpiece are Tone-pros locking style, and the Gotoh tuners have grained-ivoroid buttons. You owe it to yourself to come in and plug this guitar into any of our Carr amplifiers and finally stop searching for the "tone", it has arrived!

Collings 360 Electric Tobacco Sunburst with Jason Lollar Mini-Humbucker and P90

Collings 360 Electric Tobacco Sunburst with Jason Lollar Mini-Humbucker and P90

Bill Collings has been making some of the most highly regarded acoustic guitars in the world for quite some time, so when he decided to build electric guitars, musicians were chomping at the bit to see what would happen. The flawless construction, the incredible attention to detail, and the Collings quality are all here. Collings has redesigned a classic guitar with players in mind and while it has an affordable price tag, the meticulous construction is nothing short of astonishing.

The body shape resembles a Les Paul, but stretched in the lower bout. It also happens to be a bit thinner than a traditional Paul, which your shoulders and back will thank you for at the end of the last set on a long night. The Mahogany back has an ergonomic angle cut into it, so it rests comfortably against your chest whether sitting or standing. The bridge is a Tone Pro's locking bridge, so you can now change all your strings on the stop tailpiece with out the bridge falling off! The neck joins at the 16th fret on the bass side, however, the redesign of the angled neck joint allows the treble side to join at the 19th fret. This makes for an unencumbered visit to the higher frets an effortless process.

The knobs are traditional "top hat" type, but in typical Collings detail, the knobs are recessed into the body, giving an even greater sense of class. Underneath those knobs is 50's style wiring leading to Jason Lollar mini humbucker and Lollar P90. From Collings, " The 50's wiring refers to the fact that we attach the tone circuit to the wiper, or output, of the volume pot instead of the input side, where the pickup comes in. This makes the tone circuit less sensitive, so it doesn't get muddy when the volume decreases. It helps maintain clarity by not bleeding off the highs as the volume decreases."

Unplugged this guitar is resonant and lively, but plugging it in takes it to another level. The Mini Humbucker has a similar tone to the P90 with a  reamy midrange and airiness, but the Mini Humbucker has the punch and power of a humbucker. Beautiful overdriven tones leap out of this guitar, simply back off the knobs and a world of clean tones are at your fingertips. Combined with the P90 in the bridge position this Guitar is very versatile and is able to replicate twanging country licks, warm jazz chords, in your face rock attitude, and anything else you might need. This may be the closest thing to a "Swiss Army Knife" guitar!

Sleekly contoured for comfort and style, we've brought new life to an American classic." We, honestly, could not agree more. Combine that with Collings reputation for intonation perfection - and you have a force to be reckoned with.

The beautiful flamed maple top is complimented by a Custom Metalflake Candy Apple Red Finish that is the first of it's kind. The finish on this guitar changes from an elegant Candy Apple Red to a beatiful deep and dark red depending on the angle you are looking from, the contour and shape of this guitar only add to the detail of this finish. Aesthetic balance is a bit of a passion for Mr. Bill Collings, and each of his electrics exhibit their own understated style - unique from model to model. The fit and finish of the Collings City Limits may be astonishing to some - but it is what we have come to expect from the folks  at Collings. The truss rod cover, tuning buttons, and covers all share this same material - and its one of the many features that set Collings apart.

This Custom Collings City Limits has two select Jason Lollar P-90 pickups. The P-90 is a single coil electric guitar pickup first produced by Gibson in 1946. They were introduced to replace the "bar pickup" (aka the Charlie Christian pickup) in models like the ES-150. Towards the end of the 40's P90's were the main pickup used on all models, including the Les Paul introduced in 1952. The P-90, in general, will be brighter and more transparent than a humbucker. They feature a boosted mid-range and some of the twang of Fender single coil pickups yet with more output and fullness. Typically P90's are clean at low volumes and have plenty of bite when pushed. One downside to the P90 is the 50 Hz / 60 Hz cycle "hum" which can be caused by external electrical and magnetic fields... not a problem with P90 makers such as Lollar, who offers a reverse wound version of the pickup, which doesn't hum when the guitar is kept the middle position.

Collings is renowned for their nitro finishes on acoustic guitars - and the story remains the same here. The finish on the CL is nothing short of perfect - incredibly thin and flat as can be. The thin nitro finish allows this guitar to breathe and resonate like the aged vintage pieces of old. The unplugged acoustic qualities the CL exhibits are simply remarkable. It's the little considerations like this that will satisfy even the most discerning of vintage fans.

Collings 290 Left Handed “TV” Yellow with Dual Lollar P90 Pickups

Collings 290 Left Handed

Like all of their electric models, the Collings 290 is named after a highway that runs through the Austin hill country and takes you to Collings workshop. Although it may look like a traditional model with it’s single “Spanish” cutaway and two humbuckers, look a little deeper and appreciate the features this guitar brings to the table.

The body is crafted from select piece of dense mahogany that has two well thought out ergonomic cuts on the back of the guitar, one for the area where the guitar rests & conforms to your ribcage (in the waist of the body), and the other in the lower bout to accommodate resting on your knew when sitting down.

This "Tv" Yellow Left Handed 290 has two select Jason Lollar P-90 pickups.

Copied from Sean Costello's '53 Goldtop, these Lollar 50's Style P-90s have lower output, more delicate attack, less midrange and bass, and are "scatter wound" with a degaussed (or slightly weakened) Alnico 5 bar magnets. They have a fat P-90 tone with a smooth treble response, having more of an old p-90 sound, rather than a new pickup that sounds hard or harsh. Overall tone is brighter with less of a grind to the distortion quality and is slower to overdrive an amp than the stock P-90 set. Players have re-discovered their love of P90's for their creamy, rich tones and 6L6 amps do love a P90, and for good reason. Some of the best tones ever put to wax, that's right wax, were P90's!

Collings 290 Doghair with Lollar P90 Pickups and Bigsby Tremolo

This particular guitar has a “Doghair” finish on the entire guitar. This is derived from a white grain filler beneath a translucent layer of dark lacquer – that others have attempted to copy, as yet still a secret known only to our friends at Collings Guitars. The grain of the Mahogany has beautiful specks of white set against the natural luster of the body. This is the second guitar we have received from Collings to feature this new finish, and as we have witnessed, it attracts a great deal of attention from visitors to our shop.  View Collings 290 in Golden Doghair.

The Doghair 290 has two select Jason Lollar P-90 pickups.  The P-90 is a single coil electric guitar pickup first produced by Gibson in 1946. To complete the package, this 290 features a Bigsby B5 tremolo bar.  The Bigsby B5, sometimes referred as the Bigsby “horseshoe” is designed for flat top solid body guitars. Attaching via four screws to a guitar’s top, the B5 is extremely versatile. B5s are common on many styles of guitars including SGs, Les Paul Jrs, Telecasters, and Rickenbacker 325s.  On this 290, it is incredibly smooth!
