Collings OM2HABRA Adirondack Spruce and Brazilian Rosewood

Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
Collings OM2HABRA Adirondack Spruce and Brazilian Rosewood

It’s been more than several years since Collings has built Brazilian guitars for their broader group of authorized dealers. We are pleased to announce a very limited run of new Brazilian model Collings – possibly their last.

It is our privilege to introduce this limited run of Brazilian models with our OM2HA, featuring an Adirondack Red Spruce sound board, Adirondack bracing, and Brazilian Rosewood back & sides.  The Collings Crew continues to amaze us with their challenge of building a small bodied guitar yet with such a powerful voice.

Brazilian Rosewood combines the attributes of the two most common back and side woods, Indian Rosewood, and Mahogany. Brazilian has the ability to provide lushness of Indian Rosewood, while never sacrificing the individual note clarity you get from Mahogany. This guitar is a recording engineer’s dream! All of this is wrapped up in a guitar that you will feel comfortable sitting on the couch playing for hours, recording on music row, or playing on any stage. Simply, yet elegantly appointed, this is a true family heirloom for  generations to come.

The OM body size has been favored by fingerstyle players for years, but has made its mark in flatpicking and strumming with its unique clarity and projection. Living up to the pedigree and namesake Collings has established, this Collings OM2HA is no exception and is a true delight to play.

This OM2HA boasts the projection and tonal clarity Collings is known for, while still maintaining a good measure of warmth on the bottom end. The body size of the OM lends itself towards a more focused and defined tone than a typical dreadnought size, yet the folks at Collings build with volume in mind. This Collings OM2HA no doubt represents the defined aspects of the OM; with a crisp, clear tone across the entire spectrum.  The Adirondack Spruce top makes for an OM sized guitar that handles flatpicking very well, boasting virtually unlimited headroom and power.  It is extremely comfortable to hold and play, making it nearly impossible to put down, and very little tone is sacrificed front the OM size.

National Model D Western Maple and Figured Walnut

National Model D Western Maple and Figured Walnut

So what happens when you mix a Dobro "spider" bridge and place it in a round-neck instrument that you can actually fret and chord? Why, the Model D of course! The first of National’s spider bridge wood bodies, the Model D was introduced in 2000. The spider cone itself has a W-shape to it and the spider bridge contacts the cone in both the center and along the edges. With this design, string vibration gets distributed to numerous points around the cone. The cone itself operates more like a speaker then its biscuit bridge brethren, as the concavity is reversed so more of the sound is driven out.

What a sound it is! Imagine if you will, the ability to play those haunting dobro sounds you have been hearing, but you have no idea how to play Dobro. The Model D recreates those same sounds in a traditional "round neck" guitar. Notes have a beautiful sustain and decay, and there is a poignancy to the notes that not even the more traditional "biscuit" bridge guitars have. Even flatpicked bluegrass tunes sound as if they being played on a traditional dobro, it's quite remarkable.  A maple top is complemented by conventional f-holes and traditional cover-plate.

The distinctive Western Model D has a figured maple top, solid walnut sides and an exotic quarter-matched walnut burl back.  The top and back of the body, as well as the fingerboard, are bound with maple/rosewood "rope" binding.  The round neck is walnut with an ebony fingerboard inlaid with white mother-of-pearl arrow markers.  The headstock is overlaid with white pearloid into which the National logo has been engraved.  This guitar comes equipped with vintage-style, open gear, three-on-a-plate tuners.  The coverplate, removable strap, and tailpiece are plated in rubbed satin nickel.

Bourgeois DB Signature OM Italian Spruce and Madagascar

Hear This Instrument: Bourgeois DB Signature OM Italian Spruce and Madagascar
Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
Bourgeois DB Signature OM Italian Spruce and Madagascar

The Dana Bourgeois Signature OM features custom "Signature" Italian Spruce and "Signature" Madagascar RW... this translates into the absolute best examples of each tonewood that can currently be found. The traditional Squares & Diamonds inlay are made unique by cutting them from Certified Fossil Ivory. With finely flamed Curly Koa body binding, Gold Waverly tuners, Bone pins and a premium pickguard you will be hard pressed to find more value and beauty in a single guitar.

Here's what Dana says about Madagascar: "Madagascar rosewood will probably get you closest to the sound of Brazilian, and at a much lower price. Madagascar has much of the same rich overtone range as Brazilian, as well as a slightly "reverby" quality. It's a little heavier than Brazilian, so I have to be careful about selecting the right top and the right neck in order to keep the weight down and not adversely effect its response characteristics. " Since Dana himself still picks every top, back and side for each guitar, this isn't a problem with his builds.

The response and balance that this guitar exhibits is nothing short of astonishing. The incredibly straight grained set of Madagascar lives up to every bit of the legend it is known for... and may just be better! When coupled with an Italian Spruce top, there is a significant amount of sweet, crisp, and bright tone. Each note carries with complexity and richness.

There is certainly some magic going on with these DB Signature guitars, and this OM in particular is incredibly special! Order yours now before it's too late and this incredible wood is gone!

Santa Cruz RS Roy Southerner Custom

Hear This Instrument: Santa Cruz RS Roy Southerner Custom
Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
Santa Cruz RS Roy Southerner Custom

The Santa Cruz Roy Southerner is much more than a tribute to the guitar virtuoso of 1937 who performed with these deluxe stage instruments that were set up for Hawaiian playing styles. This beautiful retro offering incorporates the modifications requested by modern players to make vintage instruments compatible with contemporary fretting styles. The result is one that Roy Smeck would have been proud to play, with a deep, rich sunburst and larger than life sound.

The RS is designed for a commanding presence. SCGC's specially tapered bracing and body depth give the instrument considerable headroom to be driven hard and still maintain tonal integrity. The neck is designed for maximum string space at the nut, though we custom ordered this guitar with a 1 3/4" nut, to allow for very clean fingering. The right hand is also given more space, 2-5/16 inches, between the outside strings. The satisfying playability is enhanced by the suppleness of the 24-3/4 inch string length. SCGC employes hallmark lutherie skills to manipulate the sound hole size, bridge plate position and top deflection to achieve an ideal EQ for the RS, a big embraceable companion with a really pretty face.

This RS has quite a few custom appointments making it a truly unique guitar. The nut width was changed to 1 3/4" for more familiarity and playability. The logo was changed to a Vintage Script logo with a "Roy Southerner" inlaid beneath in 1929 style letters. True to vintage styling, we opted for a custom "Firestripe" pickguard which is the perfect finishing touch on this iconic instrument. Come play this guitar for yourself and find out why it is one of our favorite models!

Bourgeois Vintage Dreadnought Adirondack and Brazilian Rosewood

Bourgeois Vintage Dreadnought Adirondack and Brazilian Rosewood

Bourgeois Vintage Dreadnought Adirondack and Brazilian Rosewood

This Bourgeois Vintage D Custom (Dreadnought) features Brazilian Rosewood back and sides. Brazilian Rosewood is an extremely rare tonewood with deep bass and brilliant trebles that was used on the famous vintage guitars we have all grown to love. An international trade embargo on Brazilian rosewood products guarantees that the relatively few sets remaining in this country will continue to spiral in price as the supply dwindles. Brazilian brings remarkable darkness, depth, and warmth; while exhibiting glorious overtones across the entire tonal spectrum.

As Brazilian Rosewood is in short supply and no one really knows how much will be available in the years to come, this is an instrument that is sure to climb in rarity and value.

The Brazilian Rosewood is complimented by an Adirondack Spruce top. Adirondack is the stiffest of the spruce tonewoods and was used on all of the early guitars we love. After the war, supplies had dwindled and Sitka Spruce became the standard. While a great tonewood in itself, Sitka simply can't reproduce the clarity and lightening fast attack that Adirondack is famous for... not to mention the sheer power it is capable of when you need it.

This Vintage D also features the use of Hot Hide Glue. Hide Glue was the original glue used on the early Martin guitars but has been phased out by many luthiers due to the added time it takes to work with... not to mention it is very messy! Hot Hide glue sets up like glass, offering a more immediate and efficient transfer of energy throughout the top, making the overall guitar more responsive with a clarity of tone that is unmatched.

Smith and Young Model 1 Spider Cone Round Neck Nickel Plated Steel

Hear This Instrument: Smith and Young Model 1 Spider Cone Square Neck
Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
Smith and Young Model 1 Spider Cone Round Neck Nickel Plated Steel

There is an art to reproducing guitars from a by-gone era in today's day and age. The folks at National have certainly proven they can not only faithfully recreate historic models, but also update them tastefully with modern day technology & materials that offer improvements.  Today's National ResoPhonic is a constantly evolving company, which is always trying new ideas, reissuing classic models, and pushing the envelope as far as tone is concerned.

For many years, National ResoPhonic has been in research and development of the original Dobro's, as those models were part of the fabric and historic beginning of the original National company founded in 1927.  This is the instrument that spawned an entire industry, a sound, and inspired a tone like nothing else.  The Dobro company was founded in 1929 by brothers John Dopyera, Rudy Dopyera, Ed Dopyera, and Vic Smith. The name "Dobro" represents an early acronym for the Dopyera Brothers, thus: Dobro.

Over the years the company changed ownership many times, and was shuttered from 1942 to 1954, bought by Semi Mosely, then lost, and finally bought by Gibson. Fast forward to today's modern era National ResoPhonic instruments, located in San Luis Obispo, where founder Don Young started his company in 1989.  Having worked for the Dopyera brothers several times during his career, Don is uniquely qualified to recreate these iconic guitars.  We are proud to introduce the newest line of instruments from the Smith and Young  Spider Cone division of National, the Smith and Young Model 1 Spider Cone With A Round Neck!

These instruments incorporate a host of new innovations from our friends at Smith and Young, which make these wholly different from their National ResoPhonic cousins. The string break angle at the bridge has been increased to have a steeper incline, which increases downward pressure on the spider bridge, transferring more energy to the cone.  The result?... Enhanced volume sought after by steel players [read as "LOUD"]!!

With their newly designed hot rod cones, these instruments have an enormous volume in reserve, yet still maintain a sweet singing tone!

The Model I features a light gauge steel body with a vintage nickel "rubbed" finish that only adds to the guitar's traditional mojo and vibe, while the Model II which is maple, is finished in a vintage dark Sunburst that harkens back to the "catalog" guitars from the 40's!

Huss and Dalton Custom FS Port Orford Cedar Top European Maple Back and Sides

Built as a blend of Huss and Dalton's CM, OO, and OM; the FS is ideal for fingerstyle players who search for a crisp, overtone-rich sound. It exhibits very easy response and articulation. The Huss and Dalton Custom FS is a great instrument for the experienced fingerstyle player, but it is also suited well for anyone with a delicate touch seeking ringing, harmonically rich tonal qualities. The 2 5/16 string spacing and 1 3/4" nut width gives fingerstyle players plenty for room to work with, without alienating those who simply have a light attack.

Built with an Port Orford Cedar top and European Maple back and sides, this guitar showcases Huss and Dalton's attention to detail. The neck is also maple, and with a satin finish, feels incredible.  From the maple bindings to the tasteful use of abalone in the rosette, dot inlays, and bridge pins - this guitar will not disappoint.  Tone is rich and clear with minimal effort.  Smooth highs make for a very sweet sound that is balanced with a strong, clear low end that is never boomy, but is quite full and prominent.

National Style N-14 German Silver with Custom Chicken Foot Coverplate

National Style N-14 German Silver with Custom Chicken Foot Coverplate

The National Style N-14 is constructed with the famous "German Silver" alloy.  This material, used for the body and coverplate, is the same alloy used by the Dopyera Brothers to create the first National Tricone guitars in the late 1920's.  German Silver produces a bit more clarity and focus than the bell-like brass bodies.  The tone is a bit mellower and more controlled, with a bit less reverberation and overtones and a more extended low end.

National's reproduction Style N-14 Fret meets the demands of players needing easier access to the higher frets. Based on the original models, the hard rock maple neck clears 14 frets to the body. The German Silver body is made of thin gauge material polished to a mirror-like shine and nickel plated. The custom chicken foot coverplate, formed back, and inlaid rosewood peghead complete the authentic look of this guitar.

Huss and Dalton TOM-R Bearclaw Italian Alpine Spruce and Indian Rosewood

Hear This Instrument: Huss & Dalton Custom TOM-R
Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
Huss and Dalton TOM-R Bearclaw Italian Alpine Spruce and Indian Rosewood

This custom TOM-R from Huss and Dalton has an airy, sweet, and lively tone that only Bearclaw Italian Alpine Spruce and Rosewood can bring to the table. Balanced, crisp tone, and responsiveness is the name of the game here; all with Huss & Dalton's trademark "bell-like ring" they have become known for. This guitar is especially suited for fingerstyle players or players with a lighter attack, though this guitar sounds great when moderately flatpicked as well.   The even response and airy, shimmery qualities are characteristic of a Huss and Dalton TOM-R, and this one captures that to perfection.

Huss and Dalton applies the same building style to their OM as they do their standard dreadnoughts. The top is built with a 25' radius. A positive by-product of the radiused soundboard design, besides its load bearing properties, is a boost in the mid-range without overpowering the bass and trebles. This is design function is showcased in this guitar - boasting unsurpassed tonal balance. The Italian Spruce top is braced with hand split Adirondack Red Spruce, as are all of Huss and Dalton's guitars, which is a stiffer bracing material that makes for a more responsive and lively top due to a more efficient transfer of energy.

John Pearse Fast Turtles Faux Tortoise Shell Picks

John Pearse Fast Turtles Faux Tortoise Shell Picks

Tortoise Shell picks have been considered the "Holy Grail" of instrument picks since the early days.  Unfortunately, it is now illegal to manufacture picks using tortoise shell.  John Pearse now makes picks which are legal and non-lethal to life forms, and which get the same sound.  The John Pearse FAST TURTLES are so named in honor of all the tortoises who got away safely!

John's wonderful Studio Picks taught people that a pick could be redesigned...and has 3 different picking points, each of which gets a different sound! So, after using Casein [a resin made from Milk and Phosphoric Acid] for their Faux Tortoise Shell Pins, it wasn't much of a stretch of the imagination to think about doing the Studio Picks in Casein.

They are available in 3 different gauges of Thin [1.2mm], MEDIUM [2.5mm with Dimple] and Extra Heavy [4mm with Dimple]. They also come with a complimentary cloth pouch so that they won't get left in your pockets and go through the washing machine.
