Collings MT2 Mandola Blackface with Ebony Pickguard

We are very pleased to present this Collings MT2 Mandola featuring a gloss black top and flamed maple back and sides, finished off by an ivoroid bound ebony pickguard.  This instrument can be smooth and sweet or powerful and dominant, depending on how it's played.  Everything we love about Collings masterbuilt mandolins is present in this Mandola,  magnified by the much larger body and lower tuning, offering smooth response and playability with rich low end and clear, pleasing trebles.

Adirondack Spruce is the featured topwood on this mandola, offering virtually unlimited power and crystal clear treble.  Flamed maple back and sides is a classic wood for the back and sides of mandolin family instruments, offering a bright, punchy, immediate tone.  The 2 piece flamed back of this instrument is gorgeous, especially when set off by the glossy black top.  This one is instantly noticed on our rack, dominating our wall of mandolins!

Collings MT2V A-Style Mandolin with Gloss Varnish Finish and Ebony Pickguard

December 29th, 2011 update... Note:  If you are reading this post via the Mandolin Cafe, we respectfully wish to allay any notion that this instrument was "unloaded" as has been inferred.  As one of the leading Collings dealers on the planet, we have more than just a fond respect for our good relations with them, and would never jeopordize our association with such actions.

The bare truth:  We recently traded this instrument (at full MAP price) to a fellow whom we had otherwise considered a "good customer", suffering from buyer's remorse concerning another instrument he had previously purchased, presumeably in haste...  Said he wanted the mandolin as a gift for his wife.  We accepted that explanation at the time.

Keeping the faith:  Some of you know of our passion for hard work, born from  two primary objectives.  First & foremost, we provide respectful & honest representation for each of our luthiers.  As important, we also provide a superior level of customer service experience.  Regardless of the perhaps latent ill fated representation of this instrument, our goals are continually renewed in making new musical relationships every day.  Now, back to our original post about this fine instrument (thanks for visiting):

The MT2V is Collings' fully appointed A-model, built with an Adirondack Red Spruce top and premium flamed Maple back and sides and finished with a hand-rubbed varnish. The luthiers at Collings use an alkyd resin varnish on their varnish finished mandolins and guitars. It does not have the sheen or gloss of lacquer, but has a deeper looking luster like early oil varnishes from the 1800s or the early Loar instruments. The process takes a lot more time, both in application and drying, and is certainly not conducive to volume production. The difference in tone, however, make up for this. The varnish creates a faster response with deeper and warmer treble, and a greater overall dynamic range.

This mandolin has a tone that is rich in low mids and very smooth in the treble range.  The Varnish finish makes the Collings MT2 that much warmer, making the tone sound much deeper with lots of warmth and definition.  A custom nut width of 1 3/16" gives your left hand plenty of room to fret notes cleanly and accurately and is especially nice when transitioning from guitar to a mandolin.

This Collings MT2V also features a custom bound ebony pickguard, which aside from being both functional and visual, actually balances the tone when recordings, similar to engaging a high-pass filter on the microphone.  It reduces proximity effect, or the boominess that can arise when recording close miked.  The pickguard will also do an exceptional job at protecting that beautiful dark varnish sunburst.

SOLD: Pre-Owned: 2006 Gibson A9 Master Model Mandolin with Satin Finish

2006 Gibson A9 Master Model Mandolin with Satin Finish

The A9 is Gibson's minimally appointed A-Style mandolin featuring a satin sunburst finish, black top binding, nickel hardware, and no fretboard inlays.  Don't let the modest features fool you, however... this is a true Gibson Master Model made in Nashville and features the same wood Gibson uses on their more appointed models.

This mandolin has the classic tone you expect from a Gibson, and with a satin finish, it is a bit more open and "woody" sounding than the traditional gloss finish. The chop is thick and loud, with plenty of punch to make sure your rhythm playing is heard.  Volume is plentiful on this instrument and lead lines are strong and balanced up the fretboard with a pleasant, open high end.

This mandolin was recently setup and tweaked out by Gibson in Nashville.  The frets were leveled and dressed.  Intonation was adjusted and it now plays beautifully in tune.  They were also able to bring out the flame on the back of the instrument, making it look much more exotic.  Cork was added to the tailpiece cover to prevent buzzing.  A strap button was also installed.  The final cost of this work was $350.

There are a few finish scratches and small dents, visible in the detail photographs.  There is a series of small dents on the back of the neck, visible in the detail photo.  There is some slight binding separation that appears to be from the factory, these areas are viewable in the detail photos.  Original soft-hard case included.

SOLD: Collings MT2O A-Style Mandolin with Oval Sound Hole and Birds Eye Maple

Collings MT2O A-Style Mandolin with Oval Sound Hole and Birds Eye Maple

As Collings' fully appointed oval hole A-model, the MT2 O includes a high-gloss lacquer finish and full ivoroid bindings.  Built with select Adirondack Red spruce and birds eye maple, this mandolin produces a rich and vibrant tone that is well-suited for celtic, old-time, classical and jazz styles... without missing a beat in a bluegrass setting.

A-Style mandolins generally produce a tone that is a bit rounder and deeper than an f-style mando.  The oval sound hole takes this a step further, by allowing even more mids and lows to fully expand without the compression exhibited by the f-hole models.

This mandolin features an exquisite Adirondack spruce top, which has some of the widest grain we have seen used on a mandolin.  This topwood keeps the high end bright and clear while the oval sound hole balances the tone to perfection.

The blond finish on this mandolin is accented not only by the oval sound hole, but ivoroid binding with black purfling and a black pickguard to protect the instrument from heavy playing while also providing some tone balancing benefits, similar to activating a high-pass filter on a microphone... it takes some of the boominess out of the recording process.

SOLD: National RM-1 Resonator Mandolin w/ Aged Brass Hardware

National RM-1 Resonator Mandolin w/ Aged Brass Hardware

Inspired by a rare pre-war wood bodied National mandolin, National's resonator mandolin has traditional features like the biscuit bridge combined with modern touches such as an intonated saddle and a comfortably radiused, extended fingerboard. The art deco cast tailpiece is a National exclusive. The sides and back are solid walnut and the top is figured maple as is the neck. The tuners are vintage-style open gear.

The resonator and hardware feature an Aged Brass finish and looks perfect next to the figured sunburst maple top.

This mandolin has an instantly unique sound.  The resonator adds a level of volume previously impossible with traditional mandolins.  While the make/model is different, Sam Bush is often heard playing slide on a resonator mandolin and this RM-1 from National instantly conjures that bluesy mandolin sound.  Celtic and Irish melodies sound especially unique on this mandolin and we have customers who play them in bluegrass circles as well... dominating fiddles, banjos, and guitars like nothing you've ever heard!
