Pre-Owned: 2000 Santa Cruz Custom H 12 String All Koa

Hear This Instrument: 2000 Santa Cruz Custom H 12 String All Koa
Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
2000 Santa Cruz Custom H 12 String All Koa

Long an honored presence in the Santa Cruz collection, the 1930's inspired H Model joined the famed luthier's catalog in 1977 during the formative years of the company. This was a challenging era to introduce a non-Dreadnought, non-12-fret guitar. Opting to be favored by natural selection, SCGC presented the now standard 14 frets to the body configuration to an audience that valued the additional 2-fret access on such a classic, vintage body.

This custom 2000 Santa Cruz H 12 String features an all Koa body, and on this particular instrument the figuring of the Koa is absolutely stunning. With rich, contrasting ripples that cascade down the length of the body; leave it to Santa Cruz to provide choice woods such as this. The tone of this guitar is rich and powerful with a focus in the mid-range that seems to fall in between mahogany and rosewood.  The high end is crystal clear without being overpowering.

Most players are astonished when they play the Santa Cruz H for the first time. Its volume is startling for a small-bodied guitar. The body's depth allows for a much larger presence than would be expected in an instrument of its size. The guitar's balanced hand voicing gives the H a precise response at every fretboard position. This model is highly recommended for those who prefer the sweetness and ease of playing a small guitar but require more comfort and volume. Although many would associate a 12string with a very large body style, and very large neck; this custom version is a joy to play for long periods, with the neck being comfortable, while still providing the necessary room for chording.

This custom guitar was recently sent to Santa Cruz Guitar Company for a full check-up / setup by their technicians, and returned with a clean bill of health. Because this instrument is over a decade old there are some minor /assorted scratches and dings throughout, as well as some minor separation in the binding that can be seen in the photographs below. With some sets of highly figured Koa the wood begins to "set", which we did our best to capture in the photographs.  This does not effect the tone or stability of this guitar. Original Hardshell Case included.

Pre-Owned: 2009 Huss and Dalton TOM-R Custom Sitka Spruce and Brazilian Rosewood

Hear This Instrument: 2009 Huss and Dalton TOM-R Custom Sitka Spruce and Brazilian Rosewood
Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
2009 Huss and Dalton TOM-R Custom Sitka Spruce and Brazilian Rosewood

Brazilian Rosewood is an extremely rare tonewood with deep bass and brilliant trebles that was used on the famous vintage guitars we have all grown to love.  An international embargo on trade on Brazilian rosewood products guarantees that the relatively few sets remaining in this country will continue to spiral in price as the supply dwindles.

This guitar features a Sitka Spruce top that compliments the Brazilian back and sides beautifully! A sitka spruce top makes for a very versatile guitar, whether played with fingers or a pick.  Sitka is very warm with rich basses and doesn't require as much strength to pull the tone out of the guitar.  This guitar is highly responsive and virtually plays itself with even the lightest pick attack. The custom ordered low profile neck shape fits comfortably in your hand and makes for hours of effortless playing.

All of Huss and Dalton's standard series models employ the use of a 25' radius built into the guitar top. This is achieved by building an arch into the braces and also preparing the sides in the same radius to accept the soundboard. All of Huss and Dalton's Traditional series feature the same 25' radius prepared into the braces but the sides are left flat for a more traditional build style. This build style tends to have a more traditional tonal character, emphasizing a bit more bass. The Sitka Spruce top is braced with hand split Adirondack, as are all of Huss and Dalton's guitars, which is a stiffer bracing material that makes for a more responsive and lively top due to a more efficient transfer of energy.

This guitar is difficult to distinguish used from new, with just few light finish scratches. There is a small 1cm dent to the lower bout of the guitar that is not through the finish, this dent can be seen in detail in the photographs below.  Original hardshell case included.

This particular Custom Martin certainly stands out from the rest.... simply put, it's a good one! The tone is vibrant and alive, with a surprising amount of power for the smaller 00 body size. Pre-Owned: 2010 Huss and Dalton 000-SP Custom Figured Mahogany

Hear This Instrument: 2010 Huss and Dalton 000-SP Custom Figured Mahogany
Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
2010 Huss and Dalton 000-SP Custom Figured Mahogany

The Huss and Dalton 000-SP is an ideal 12 Fret fingerstyle instrument for players who prefer a little bit more low end than most OM instruments can offer.  The Huss 000s exhibit great warmth with deep rich lows and sparkling highs and upper mids.

This particular 2010 Huss & Dalton 000-SP is constructed with an Engelmann Spruce top and Figured Mahogany back and sides. This combination gives the guitar full, complex overtones, quick responsiveness and an extraordinarily clear voice. It practically demands to be fingerpicked, with a highly responsive tone, even when played softly, although it sounds incredible flatpicked as well, withstanding a reasonable level of pick attack.  Mids are clear and defined which can be attributed to the outstanding set of Mahogany used on the back and sides.

Huss and Dalton applies the same building style to their 000 as they do their standard dreadnoughts. The top is built with a 25' radius. A positive by-product of the radiused soundboard design, besides its load bearing properties, is a boost in the mid-range without overpowering the bass and trebles. This is design function is showcased in this guitar – boasting unsurpassed tonal balance. The Italian Spruce top is braced with hand split Adirondack Red Spruce, a stiffer bracing material that makes for a more responsive and lively top.

This 2010 Huss & Dalton 000-SP is in absolute pristine condition with no major dents or scratches to note. Original Hardshell Case is included.

Pre-Owned: 2000 Santa Cruz Custom D-45 European Spruce and Brazilian Rosewood

Hear This Instrument: 2000 Santa Cruz Custom D-45 European Spruce and Brazilian Rosewood
Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
2000 Santa Cruz Custom D-45 European Spruce and Brazilian Rosewood

The Dreadnought: the design that introduced boutique lutherie. In the early 1970's, it was the rare player who would consider any guitar smaller than a dreadnought. Stellar players were handicapped by the traditional D's predominate bass and thin trebles. The strength of the typical dreadnought guitar is in its power and volume, which are achieved by the guitar's large body size. The increased air space also gives the instrument a predisposition to the bass range, an asset to some playing styles and a detriment to others.

The Santa Cruz Guitar Company Dreadnought Model was carefully conceived to accommodate the modern player's need for sophisticated balance with more substance in midrange and treble. To deliver these qualities in the acceptable dreadnought-sized body required a very non-traditional approach, as compared to the factory offerings of the day. Using time honored lutherie skills, SCGC created a Trojan Horse - familiar on the outside, dangerous on the inside. SCGC's innovative D Model remains a mainstay of artists who require acoustic volume without compromising the quality of higher frequencies.

This custom Santa Cruz D45 features a beautiful set of straight grained Brazilian Rosewood back and sides paired with an exquisite European Spruce top that does have figuring patterns of Bearclaw behind the bridge. The full 45 style inlays only add to the collect-ability and uniqueness of this phenomenal instrument. The sound is absolutely sublime. The European top provides plenty of power, however, this instrument's power lies in it's subtlety and finesse. Barely touch it and you will be rewarded with a clear bass response that you can feel in your chest. Single note lines are round in profile, yet defined. It is as if the overtones know exactly when to get out of the way of the next overtone! Strummed chordal passages are defined yet lush, a natural by product of the Brazilian back and sides.

This particular Santa Cruz D Model has a unique Tapered bracing with a Scalloped Cross brace on the bass side. This unique bracing pattern allows for a very balanced sound with enhanced bass response that allows for a more versatile tone compared to traditionally braced dreadnoughts.

Not only does this guitar have incredible tone it also features many custom elegant appointments such as an Abalone Rosette, Multicolor Marquetry backstrip, Mahogany Neck with a Custom Vintage Neck Profile and Ivoroid Biding, Ebony fretboard with 45 style inlays and Purfling, Ebony bridge with custom 45 style inlays, Ebony Bridge Pins with Pearl dots, Brazilian Rosewood headstock overlay with 45 style torch inlay, and Gold plated tuners.

This guitar is in excellent condition with just a few minor scratches to the top from finger style play which can be seen in the photographs below. There are also a few minor scratches on the back which can be seen in detail in the photographs below, none of these scratches are through the finish. Additionally, this instrument has been PLeK'd by our friends at Glaser Instruments here in Nashville, for the ultimate in playability! Original Hardshell Case Included.

Pre-Owned: 1993 Santa Cruz Tony Rice #262 – “The Tone Poems Guitar” – Owned Personally by Tony Rice – ***NEW PRICE***

1993 Santa Cruz Tony Rice #262 -

Tony Rice stands amongst the greatest guitar players ever, regardless of musical genre. He spans the range of acoustic music from Bluegrass to jazz and even singer songwriter folk.  To be sure, he is likely the single greatest innovator of flat picked acoustic music since the legendary Clarence White rewrote the book for us all. Tony has enjoyed a long and fruitful musical career alongside of master players such as JD Crowe, Norman Blake, and David “Dawg” Grisman. He has virtually re-written the rules for acoustic music with such classic albums as Manzanita, Devlin, Blake and Rice, and Tone Poems.

We are proud to present Tony Rice’s personal guitar from Santa Cruz, which was in fact used on the Tone Poems record.  This was a unique record in that many of the most archetypal instruments were consolidated for historic representation on one record with two of the finest pickers that have ever lived. Along with famous Loar mandolins and Pre-War Martins, Tony chose this particular instrument to represent the very best that modern guitar builders could produce to stand alongside the giants of older instruments.

In the early 70's, Tony cemented a lifelong musical and personal friendship with mandolinist David Grisman. Dawg had begun to experiment with a deeper form of improvisation than standard Bluegrass fiddle tune chord changes offered. Tony decided to expand his knowledge of music and left the JD Crowe band to complete the now legendary David Grisman Quintet. Tony quickly befriended band mate, fiddle player Darol Anger. Darol was a friend of Richard Hoover and introduced the two. Richard asked if he could design Tony a custom instrument that would benefit his playing and tonal requirements, and there began a lifelong friendship in 1979.

The first design for the Santa Cruz Tony Rice Signature model was produced that year, and continues to be offered in the Santa Cruz line today. Tony has constantly been a sounding board for his guitar’s design and a few of his instruments have been sold to the public in those years. This particular instrument was one of Tony’s favorites, nicknamed “Chocolate.” In a personal note that will accompany the guitar, he describes that this “guitar has been used by me more so than any other 'Cruz' both in public performance and recording projects.”  He goes on to say “Its performance was particularly satisfying to me on the Bluegrass Album Band Volume 6. On that particular recording event, it was used in conjunction with my 1935 Martin D-28, and I defy the listener to distinguish one guitar from the other.”  He also states that John Carlini used this Santa Cruz almost exclusively on his album River Suite for Two Guitars.

Tony's instrument preferences came from years of playing his favorite guitar, Clarence White’s 1935 D-28. When Clarence’s father purchased the guitar from McCabe’s in California, this guitar was almost destroyed. Clarence’s father had the shop replace the fingerboard with a Gretsch fingerboard that had pre-cut fret slots, hence Tony’s preference for the in-between scale of 25 1/4 inches...  not as long as a Martin long scale 25.9” and not as short as a Gibson 24 ¾” scale.

“Chocolate” is incredibly comfortable to play. Upon receiving any new Santa Cruz, Tony takes the guitar to his personal technician for a "special neck treatment."  This involves removing all the finish and then working in a special finish that gives the feel of a well worn vintage neck.  This treatment is a characteristic of all his guitars.  He discusses this on his Homespun DVD set entitled, "The Tony Rice Guitar Method."

The German Spruce top has aged beautifully, while the neck is flat with very little relief, according to Tony’s low profile set-up requirements. This guitar even uses Tony's choice of string, D’aquisto Steel strings! The figured Brazilian back and sides provides a growl to the instrument, along with clarity you won’t find on other guitars. Despite being used on numerous recordings, and public performances, it does not have as many dings and scratches that you might associate with a highly used instrument.

From Tony’s own words: “I am parting with this instrument as I have with others made by Dick Hoover because our combined research and development efforts have been very successful in the ongoing efforts to create a superior sounding Dreadnought acoustic guitar. This one being a ‘strong link in the chain.’” We humbly agree with Tony’s words and invite you to own a piece of musical history and heritage!

Pre-Owned: 2011 Bourgeois Custom Varnish Vintage D

Hear This Instrument: 2011 Bourgeois Custom Varnish Vintage D
Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
2011 Bourgeois Custom Varnish Vintage D

This custom ordered 2011 Vintage Brazilian Rosewood Dreadnought from Dana Bourgeois is loaded with tone enhancing features that combine to make a stellar instrument with a tone that only these features can offer.  Dana's guitars are already some of the finest made, so when you add some of these special upgrades you are truly in for an instrument that not only looks and feels like an "old soul", it is!

The finish is an oil varnish, which pushes the tone to another level.  According to Dana, "The closest thing to the sound of a 70 year old nitrocellulose lacquer finish isn't a new lacquer finish, but a thin oil varnish finish. Properly applied, oil varnish smooths out the "jangly" sound of a new guitar in much the same way that lots of playing seems to accomplish."  This makes the guitar sound more "broken in" from the start, not to mention the deep golden hue the varnish imparts on the finish is simply gorgeous.

Additional features include a 1 3/4" nut width, fossil ivory bridge pins and hot hide glue construction.

Dana has chosen a beautiful set of straight grain Brazilian Rosewood for the back and sides of this one! In the hands of Dana, especially with these specifications, you can guarantee the guitar will be a monster... and this one certainly is!

This 2011 Bourgeois was also built with Adirondack top bracing, as are all of Dana's guitars.  The Adirondack bracing was painstakingly made by hand in the old fashioned method with hot hide glue.  Hide Glue sets up very hard, like glass, allowing more energy transfer through the bracing. Hot Hide Glue adds responsiveness across the spectrum.  This type of glue was used on the early guitars we have all fallen in love with, but later phased out due to the time required to use it, not to mention the mess it makes.  The sonic benefits can't be ignored, adding not only responsiveness, but a new level of detail and clarity.  The Adirondack Bracing helps to stiffen the top, making it that much more powerful with more headroom and overall volume.

This guitar posesses everything we love about Dana's guitars, but also adds another dimension to the sound.  The highs are a bit mellower and the bass is more prominent.  The guitar is incredibly responsive and sounds great played softly as well. It reminded everyone in the shop of a Vintage guitar in looks and sound.  The clarity and definition we find on all of Dana's guitars is right there... even on the lowest strings.  Add the vintage like "thump" of this guitar and you have something nearly impossible to put down. This guitar is already sold, but keep your eye on our arriving soon list, we have 2 more on order with similar specs!

This 2011 Bourgeois Custom Varnish D is in excellent condition and hard to distinguish from new. Because this guitar does have a varnish finish there are a few minor scratches to the top and back as seen in the photographs below. There were a few scratches that we were unable to photograph because of how minor and light they are.

Pre-Owned: 2007 Taylor GS7 Cedar and Indian Rosewood

2007 Taylor GS7 Cedar and Indian Rosewood

After the success of  Taylor's T5, Bob Taylor set out to create an instrument that he knew would satisfy his customers once again. With a deep piano like tone as well as shape refinements to the body and Taylor's X-Bracing, the introduction of the Grand Symphony series far surpasses their goal to create an absolute outstanding guitar.

With a "Back to the Basics" design approach, Taylor really focused on the tone of the Grand Symphony. The Grand Symphony's Western Red Cedar top produces an extraordinary voice for fingerstyle players or players who play with a light pick attack. With a recognizable tone that projects a rich, full, and lush tone with articulate, warm highs that are never brittle. The back and sides feature an exquisite set of Indian Rosewood. Indian Rosewood is known and loved for it's lush low end and ringing sustain. This tonewood adds a natural reverb like tone to the instrument, providing just enough overtones for delicate classical numbers.

Because of the "Back to the Basics" design the Taylor GS features simplified appoitments such as Ivoroid binding, Abalone Rosette, and Abalone inlays. These appointments, although simple, do create a very elegant look and with it's incredible tone this guitar is a nice change in pace from Bob Taylor and his Company.

This Taylor GS7 is in mint condition, there are a few light scratches to the top and back that we tried to photograph but because they are such light scratches we were unable to. Not uncommon for mass produced guitars there is a crack in the filler of the neck joint as seen in the photographs below.

Pre-Owned: 90′s CFox Frisco “Cedar Reserve”

Hear This Instrument: Charles Fox Frisco Sitka and Indian Rosewood
Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
90's CFox Frisco

A native northern Californian, Charles Fox lived for much of the 1960s in Chicago, where he earned a Masters in Fine Arts from Northwestern University. After teaching art in Colorado and New Hampshire, Fox decided to pursue the passion for making stringed instruments that struck him shortly after he finished graduate school. Settling in Vermont, he pioneered formal lutherie education in North America by founding the School of Guitar Research and Design in 1973 In the 1980s, Fox moved back to the West Coast, eventually establishing first the American School of Lutherie in Healdsburg, California, and then the CFox guitar company, the latter of which was dedicated to realizing his acoustic guitar designs in a small production environment.

Though well received by players, CFox guitars didn’t sell enough to reward investors, and in 2001, the company shut its doors. Shortly thereafter, Fox set out for Portland, Oregon, where he set up his dream workshop in the basement of his house and now focuses on high-end steel-string flattop and classical guitars.

This 90's CFox Frisco features a Cedar top with Indian Rosewood back & sides. CFox only made 10 of these Frisco's with a Cedar top, appropriately calling these models "Cedar Reserve".  Cedar produces an extraordinary voice for fingerstyle players or players who play with a light pick attack. The tone is instantly recognizable projecting a rich, full, and lush tone with articulate, warm highs that are never brittle. When combined with Indian Rosewood this guitar has incredible sustain with a natural reverb like tone that is warmed up by the lush low end.

Some of the other fine appointments are grained Cocobolo binding w/colored purfling on soundboard, back & sides, Abalone rosette, Ebony bridge with Ebony bridge pins and end pin with Abalone dots, a Honduras Mahogany neck with an Ebony fingerboard and Ebony headstock overlay, and gold Schaller tuning machines w/Ebony buttons.

This CFox Frisco has the Fishman Prefix Blender pickup system installed. The Prefix offers volume control as well as bass, treble and a wide-range semi-parametric EQ which allows you to isolate certain frequencies and boost or cut them as needed. From Fishman's Website "To complement and contrast this pickup, our miniature gooseneck microphone captures the guitar’s elusive natural ambience and sound chamber resonance. Blend the pickup and the microphone together for a powerful and cohesive acoustic guitar tone that is deeper and more “filled out” than the sound of either the microphone or pickup alone. To complete the package, we include a phase switch and an adjustable notch filter, both essential for fighting feedback." -Fishman.com

This guitar has a few dents on the top, as the detail photographs will indicate.  There are some minor scratches to the top, back, and headstock which are also pictured.  Original Hardshell Case Included.

Pre-Owned: 1966 Martin D-18 Sitka Spruce and Mahogany **NEW PRICE!**

1966 Martin D-18 Sitka Spruce and Mahogany **NEW PRICE!**

It is said that at times during the 50's and 60's, Martin had a 3 year backlog in instrument orders!  Nothing else sounded like a Martin and nothing else would do,  it was the prestigious guitar to own.  This backlog would lead Martin to build their new factory in Nazereth in 1964 where they continue to build today. This 1966 D-18 was built just a few years later and happens to be one of the most tonally balanced D-18s we have come across. The now legendary D-18 design was introduced officially in 1934 and along with the D-28, set the standard by which all guitars would be judged... even to this day.

The D-18 is famous for it's dry, woody sound.  Built with Mahogany back and sides and a spruce top, it was famously easy to record and many years after it's introduction would become the quintessential guitar for flatpickers such as Doc Watson and even Clarence White. Even though Clarence made a D-28 famous, he is known for recording with the D-18, as it offered a more direct and balanced tone long before the days of EQ and "fixing it in the mix."  Point a good D-18 into a microphone at the right spot and your done!

This particular D-18 has a Sitka Spruce top, which replaced the Adirondack tops of the pre-war guitars.  Adirondack was nearly non-existent after the war, since it was used for just about everything due to its strength and rigidity.  Sitka Spruce, however, was very plentiful and as it turns out, a very nice tonewood in it's own right!

Sitka Spruce isn't as stiff as Adirondack and has a lower stiffness-to-weight ratio.  A positive side-effect of this more flexible soundboard is that it doesn't take near as much strength to produce tone.  A player with a lighter attack or even fingerstyle players will find Sitka Spruce much more suited to their playing style.  The set of Sitka Spruce on this '66 shows nice grain figuring and has aged beautifully.  The trebles are rich with a balanced tone across the spectrum and none of the low-end woofiness that can sometimes plague dreadnought guitars.  The fretboard and bridge are Brazilian Rosewood, no doubt contributing to the balanced high-end on this guitar.

This guitar shows numerous dings and scratches, as the detail photographs will demonstrate.  The tuners, nut, saddle, and bridge pins were replaced by Dan Lashbrook, though the originals will be included with the guitar.  He has also replaced the saddle with a cut-through type. He has also replaced the bridgeplate with what Martin would have used at the time, hardrock, American Maple. All work was done with the understanding that no modification was to be made which could deviate from this vintage instrument's collectability, and all modifications are reversible should you choose to do so.

The guitar shows evidence of being refretted and appears to have had a neck reset at some point.   The guitar has been refinished and the new finish is aging nicely with finish checking throughout.  There is a crack on the side of the guitar near the binding that we cannot see from the inside, pictured. The current frets show significant wear in the first position, nothing a fret dress wouldn't take care of.  The original hardshell case is included.
