SOLD: Pre-Owned: 2005 Collings D2HBbA Brazilian Rosewood and Adirondack Spruce

2005 Collings D2HBbA Brazilian Rosewood and Adirondack Spruce

Brazilian Rosewood is an extremely rare tonewood with deep bass and brilliant trebles that was used on the famous vintage guitars we have all grown to love.  An international embargo on trade on Brazilian rosewood products guarantees that the relatively few sets remaining in this country will continue to spiral in price as the supply dwindles.  Here is your chance to get that famous sound on a guitar that was masterfully built by Collings... at an incredible pre-owned price!

In addition to a gorgeous set of Brazilian, this guitar features an Adirondack Spruce top.  Adirondack spruce is a tonewood that has a high stiffness to weight ratio and virtually unlimited headroom and power.  This allows the player to pull unlimited volume and tone from the instrument, making it a classic tonewood for Bluegrass players.

The sound of this instrument is everything you would expect it to be with Brazilian Rosewood, Adirondack Spruce, and the Collings name on the headstock... only more! It is very loud with deep, rich lows that are present even on lead lines up and down the neck, making each note round and full.  Trebles are smooth and clear, offering just enough top end to balance out the powerful bass only Brazilian Rosewood can offer.

A highlander pickup system with internal microphone is installed in this system  This guitar has a few dents, as shown in the detail photographs.  There is some light scratching on the pickguard from normal playing.  Hardshell case included.

2003 Fine Resophonic 12 Fret with Birds-Eye Maple

Fine Resophonic instruments, made in France by Mike Lewis and Pierre Avocat, are regarded as being among the best handmade Custom Resonator Guitars on the planet. Michael Lewis has built guitars for Eric Clapton, Michael Messer, Robbie McIntosh (Norah Jones) and Louisiana Red. He is one of the most sought after restoration experts for vintage National Guitars.  Each instrument is completely hand-built to the very highest standards possible and the attention to detail is faultless.

This resonator guitar is constructed of birds-eye maple and features a single-cone resonator.  This instrument shines when played with a slide. Whether playing Piedmont or Delta, this puppy can dial it in like an AM radio. The maple body brings a mellow, smooth tone compared to it’s metal body counterparts, with rich, lingering sustain.

This guitar has some clouding on the coverplate and some binding lifting in the waist area of the top and bottom of the body on both the bass and treble side.

SOLD: Pre-Owned: 1964 Vintage Gibson SG Special Polaris White

1964 Vintage Gibson SG Special Polaris White

The Gibson SG was introduced in 1961 when Gibson gave the Les Paul a thinner, flat-topped mahogany body and a double cutaway, while also moving the neck joint by three frets,  making the upper notes more accessible.

The new Gibson model featured a slimmer neck profile and a virtually non-existent heel.  Gibson advertised the new SG as having the "fastest neck in the world."  Despite overwhelming popularity, Les Paul requested his named be dropped and Gibson honored his request, naming the new design the "SG," which stood for "Solid Guitar."

Some of the most famous guitar players of all time have played Gibson SG model guitars... Eric Clapton, Angus Young, and Tony Iommi are among the most recognized.

This "SG Special" features the Soapbar P-90 pickups with the original small 3-layer pickguard.  The "Polaris White" finish has held up incredibly well, with a small bit of finish checking and only a few chips.

SOLD: Pre-Owned: 2007 Santa Cruz RS Roy Southerner Sitka Spruce and Mahogany

Hear This Instrument: Santa Cruz RS #5408
Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
2007 Santa Cruz RS Roy Southerner Sitka Spruce and Mahogany

The Santa Cruz Roy Southerner is much more than a tribute to the guitar virtuoso of 1937 who performed with these deluxe stage instruments that were set up for Hawaiian playing styles. This beautiful retro offering incorporates the modifications requested by modern players to make vintage instruments compatible with contemporary fretting styles.  The result is one that Roy Smeck would have been proud to play, with a deep, rich sunburst and larger than life sound.

The Santa Cruz Roy Southerner is designed for a commanding presence. SCGC's specially tapered bracing and body depth give the instrument considerable headroom to be driven hard and still maintain tonal integrity. The neck is designed for maximum string space at the nut (1-13/16 inches) to allow for very clean fingering. The right hand is also given more space, 2-5/16 inches, between the outside strings. The satisfying playability is enhanced by the suppleness of the 24-3/4 inch string length. Santa Cruz employs some of their hallmark lutherie skills to manipulate the sound hole size, bridge plate position and top deflection to achieve an ideal EQ for the Roy Southerner, a big embraceable companion with a really pretty face.

The tone of this guitar is that of a classic vintage J-45, with huge volume and rich, clear, and powerful chords.  The guitar will record beautifully thanks to the signature Santa Cruz string balance.

This guitar has some scratches on the headstock, as shown in the photos.  There is a scratch on the top, just above the soundhole, also shown in the photograph.  There are some binding dings as shown in the photograph.  Hardshell case included.

SOLD: Pre-Owned: 2003 Martin HD-28 Sitka Spruce and Indian Rosewood

2003 Martin HD-28 Sitka Spruce and Indian Rosewood

The Martin HD-28 Standard Dreadnought Acoustic is the re-creation of Martin's legendary herringbone style 28 guitars. It has a Sitka spruce top, solid rosewood back and sides, and mahogany neck with ebony fingerboard. Vintage appointments include herringbone top trim, a traditional zigzag backstrip, and Martin's famous scalloped X-bracing that allows the top to vibrate more freely, yielding a louder, more open tone.

This martin certainly has the tone we've come to expect from this famous guitar maker... it is rich and dark with well rounded notes and big, bassy chords.

This instrument has some dents, as indicated in the detail photographs.  There is some light finish scratching that does not go through the wood.  A strap button has been installed.  Hardshell case included.

SOLD: Pre-Owned: 2006 Gibson A9 Master Model Mandolin with Satin Finish

2006 Gibson A9 Master Model Mandolin with Satin Finish

The A9 is Gibson's minimally appointed A-Style mandolin featuring a satin sunburst finish, black top binding, nickel hardware, and no fretboard inlays.  Don't let the modest features fool you, however... this is a true Gibson Master Model made in Nashville and features the same wood Gibson uses on their more appointed models.

This mandolin has the classic tone you expect from a Gibson, and with a satin finish, it is a bit more open and "woody" sounding than the traditional gloss finish. The chop is thick and loud, with plenty of punch to make sure your rhythm playing is heard.  Volume is plentiful on this instrument and lead lines are strong and balanced up the fretboard with a pleasant, open high end.

This mandolin was recently setup and tweaked out by Gibson in Nashville.  The frets were leveled and dressed.  Intonation was adjusted and it now plays beautifully in tune.  They were also able to bring out the flame on the back of the instrument, making it look much more exotic.  Cork was added to the tailpiece cover to prevent buzzing.  A strap button was also installed.  The final cost of this work was $350.

There are a few finish scratches and small dents, visible in the detail photographs.  There is a series of small dents on the back of the neck, visible in the detail photo.  There is some slight binding separation that appears to be from the factory, these areas are viewable in the detail photos.  Original soft-hard case included.

SOLD: Pre-Owned: 1995 Gibson ES-135 Thinline Semi-Hollow with Cutaway

1995 Gibson ES-135 Thinline Semi-Hollow with Cutaway

The Gibson ES-135 is a semi-hollow body electric guitar made by the Gibson Guitar Corporation. Introduced in 1991, it was discontinued in 2002.

With a florentine cutaway, a trapeze tailpiece, two P-100 pickups (stacked humbuckers with P-90 covers) with two tone and volume controls and a three-way switch. It had looks and tone reminiscent of the old ES-125 TDC, but was not a fully hollow thinline guitar, having a feedback-suppressing sustain block running under the pickups and bridge from the neck/body joint to the base of the body like the ES-335.

The body itself and neck were again of similar construction to the ES-335, being built from laminated maple but with an unbound rosewood fingerboard with dot-style fret position markers. The metal fittings were chrome-plated, and the p-100s had black plastic “soapbar” style covers.  At launch, Gibson claimed it was the first semi-solid electric guitar with a Florentine-style single cutaway in the world.

This guitar has a few chips on the headstock, as shown in the photographs.  There are some chips at the base of the neck block, also shown in the photograph.  There is some finish hazing on the rear upper bout which is not able to be photographed.  There are a few dings on the rear lower bout, as shown in the  photograph.  There was a chip on the first inlay dot that has been filled in.  It has been recently setup by Richard Starkey in the Nashville area for .11 gauge strings.

SOLD: Pre-Owned: 2004 Bourgeois “The Soloist” Brazilian Rosewood and Engelmann Spruce

2004 Bourgeois

Introduced at the 2004 NAMM convention, the Bourgeois #5515 is a new model prototype,  "The Soloist."

Dana says:
"Nearly 20 years ago, inspired by the vision of Eric Schoenberg,  I built what I believe was the first cutaway OM in a style that has since become something of a modern classic. (It was the first guitar of this style that I, at any rate, and the guitar community at large, was aware of.) Eric and I later became partners, founded a guitar company, and produced the new model under the name "The Soloist",  after an elegant Victorian fingerstyle guitar associated with the early 20th Century guitarist, Vadah Olcott-Bickford.  After the dissolution of our partnership, Eric and I agreed to produce our own separate versions of the Soloist.  Aside from a handful of one-off examples, this is my first formal introduction of the Soloist as a regular model.

The 2004 Bourgeois Soloist is a true fingerstyle OM, featuring an Engelmann spruce top, Brazilian rosewood back and sides, a 2  5/16"  pyramid bridge, and the original Soloist style cutaway. Maintaining the spirit of the original Soloist, I have combined the only finest woods with the simplest of appointments, most notably Brazilian rosewood body bindings.  While on the subject of decoration, I will take advantage of this opportunity to note that the marquetry  backstrip  that I first designed for the Soloist (and now use on many of my guitars) has been copied by more than one marquetry manufacturer, and is now available through a number of distributors. Far from being offended, I am delighted that other makers have mistaken this for a vintage design!"

The Brazilian on this guitar features very straight grain and sounds rich and vibrant, everything you would expect out of Brazilian Rosewood.  Lots of sustain and complex overtones with lightning fast response thanks to the Engelmann Spruce top, which is much softer than Sitka, offering more volume and ease of playing with a lighter attack.

This guitar has been recently setup and had a plek job done by Glaser Instruments.  There is some wear on the rear binding on the lower bout, as shown in the photograph.  Ameritage case included.

SOLD: Pre-Owned: 2003 Scheerhorn Dobro L-Body Flamed Maple

2003 Scheerhorn Dobro L-Body Flamed Maple

Tim Scheerhorn, who was headed for a career as an engineer, before deciding to change courses and become an instrument builder has revolutionized Dobro design and construction. He is, quite simply, building some of the best Dobros that have ever been built.

Tim redesigned the Dobro from the ground up. He uses all solid woods and has always used solid woods, instead of laminates. He took the Dobro to be an acoustic instrument, which it is, and wanted to make the most resonant guitar he could make. He thought that the sound well inside resonator instruments "locked all the resonant qualities of the top and back" inside the guitar. He uses internal baffles to capture the guitar and a specially designed ramped, parabolically curved baffle that starts at the waist and curves toward the neck block. This gave the Dobro far more projection and a much bigger sound. This baffle design also helped eliminate the soundwell chamber.

Another design first was the "L" body or Large body. From the builder, "In it's basic dimensions, it's about a half an inch longer, from tailpiece to the neck, than the standard Dobro, about a half-inch wider in the waist and a quarter-inch deeper." This makes the instrument's tone surprisingly deeper and more available at any level.

What does this all add up to on this fine example of Mr. Scheerhorn's work? A Dobro that is expansively loud. It fills rooms with it's lush sweet tones. Single note runs jump out of the instrument, and chords ring making other guitars envious in it's sustain. The hype is real, this is the real deal.

Tim is no longer taking orders for his instruments as his back log grew and grew to years for those lucky few able to order one. You won't be seeing any of these anytime soon.

This guitar is a players instrument and shows wear.  There are scratches and dings throughout, as shown in the numerous detail photos.  The finish is worn through into the wood in multiple spots.   The coverplate shows scratches and discoloration.  Hardshell case included.
