2011 Stehr Auditorium Lucky Strike Redwood and Movingui Back and Sides

2011 Stehr Auditorium Lucky Strike

Creativity, design, and craftsmanship applied to some of Mother Nature's finest woods to shape an instrument possessing subtle harmonic qualities... is how Joel Stehr defines an acoustic guitar. Joel began building in 2000, after attending the American School of Lutherie in Portland, Oregon with Master Luthier Charles Fox.

Stehr prides himself on displaying the wood's aesthetic and acoustic beauty as a piece of art. This drive and determination to showcase the natural beauty of the instrument becomes very clear the minute you see one of his creations.  This particular model is no exception, proving the unmatched uniqueness and stunning visuals that a boutique luthier can offer.

Stehr's Auditorium model makes a great fingerstyle instrument but is big enough for a really great flatpicker, perfect for the mixed style player. The curvy waist makes it very comfortable to play and the 13 frets to the body is an ideal compromise over traditional 12 or 14 fret guitars.

This 2011 Stehr Auditorium features a "Lucky Strike" Redwood top with Movingui back and sides. The Lucky Strike Redwood is a rare highly sought after species of Redwood and is known for it's tonal excellence and aesthetic properties.  The back  of this instrument are Movingui which is also a very rare tonewood.Movingui can be found in semi-deciduous and secondary forests of West Africa, this wood is resistant to termite attach and is often used because of its durability and high resilience. Often compared to Mahogany, the tone of this wood has everything that Mahogany has to offer with out an  overpowering midrange bite and is slightly more balanced. The sides of this gorgeous Stehr are actually two pieces of wood, Movingui with Mahogany. Joel uses his "double sides" technique so the sides don't easily absorb energy, and instead, reflect the sound back into the top and back, where it can do the most good! it also has structural benefits as well, making the sides much more stable and less prone to crack. The combination of these tonewoods offers a  unique and versatile tone that is complimented by the absolute beautiful build style that Joel Stehr implements in all of his instruments.

Hard to distinguish used from new this guitar is in pristine condition. There are only a few very minor scratches, and one small impression in the finish, however not through the finish, on the lower bout treble side, and can be seen in the detailed photographs below. Original Hardshell Case included.  Read More »

2011 National Collegian Galaxy Blue Steel Body with Bullethole Coverplate

There is an art to reproducing guitars from a by-gone era in today's day and age. The folks at National have certainly proven that they can not only faithfully recreate models, but update them tastefully and even improve upon them. Last year we after months of research between San Luis Obispo and Nashville, National Resophonic and Artisan Guitars were pleased to re-introduce the National "Collegian" to the world!

The National Collegian is a steel-body, 14 fret instrument.  It was originally introduced in the late 30's as a student model, with a value price to match. It was essentially a Duolian with a simpler coverplate. Instead of a "sieve" coverplate featured on the guitars of the time, the Collegian had two concentric rings of holes with 18 holes in each ring. These "bullet-hole" cover plates made these resonators stand out from the crowd, also lending a unique sound to the instrument.   There is a mojo to this guitar not seen since the days before the big War.

Yes, it cuts like steel can only cut, but the Collegian has a roundness to it that echoes brass in it's warmth. Chords are rich and complex with slight overtones, for a pronounced note quality that allows it to shine when played with one of our Diamond Slides. It sustains, and has a beautiful roundness to each tone.  From National's 1941 Collegian ad: " Their tone quality and volume surpass that of any non-electric in this price field. They possess amazing sustaining power, with bell clear harmonics and smooth, vibrant volume: yet they really have commanding 'punch' for the professional."  This year our friends at National are making Artisan a National Collegian in a new "Galaxy Blue" finish.

This Pre-Owned 2011 Blue Collegian is in absolute pristine condition with no scratches, dings, or fretwear to note.

SOLD: Pre-Owned: 2010 Huss and Dalton MJC Jumbo Cutaway NEW PRICE!

Hear This Instrument: Huss & Dalton Mini Jumbo
Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
2010 Huss and Dalton MJC Jumbo Cutaway NEW PRICE!

Huss & Dalton's MJC is a mid-sized jumbo model measuring 16" across the lower bout with a depth of 4 1/2".  Reminiscent of a smaller, more manageable version of the Super Jumbo's, these instruments have always had a certain allure to them. Known for their powerful strumming ability, the Medium Jumbo excels at singer-songwriter accompaniment, however, can still be finger-picked with ease. This MJC features an especially beautiful set of Sitka Spruce on the top with Indian Rosewood on the back and sides. Huss and Dalton added a vintage Toner to the top of this one, giving it a gorgeous caramel color in person. Their unique Stingray inlays and the half-herringbone purfling give this guitar an especially classy look as well.

This pre-owned 2010 version of Huss and Dalton's MJC is highly responsive across the tonal spectrum, offering effortless playability with pure, clean tone. As with all of their instruments, this one is braced with hand-split Adirondack bracing adding more rigidity to the Sitka top.  The Sitka  top sounds great when played fingerstyle or when flatpicked and strummed.  Huss and Dalton's famous bell-like tone is accentuated with lush, blossoming overtones, and smooth, pleasant mids and highs.  The cutaway allows for effortless reach to higher notes for lead players and with the jumbo body size, tone is never sacrificed.

This 2010 instrument shows no sign of wear and tear, and is indistinguishable from new. There are no nicks, dings, scratches anywhere on the guitar, additionally, there is also no fret wear on the guitar. Original Hardshell case included.

SOLD: Pre-Owned: 2010 Huss and Dalton TD-R Custom European Spruce and Indian Rosewood NEW PRICE

Hear This Instrument: Huss & Dalton TD-R Euro Spruce Top
Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
2010 Huss and Dalton TD-R Custom European Spruce and Indian Rosewood NEW PRICE

Huss and Dalton's Traditional flattop series brings the best of the past to the present. As is true with all of the instruments Huss and Dalton offers, the T-DR show a reverence and respect for past builders, but with a passion for ingenuity.

The back and sides of this 2010 TD-R feature a gorgeous set of Indian Rosewood.  Rosewood is associated with rich, deep bases and sparkling high end with lots of power.  This Huss and Dalton 2010 TD-R features  a custom European Spruce top, which brings richness, punch, and complex overtones with lots of headroom. Not as stiff as Adirondack, European Spruce is a bit stiffer than Sitka Spruce offering a great amount of power for flatpicking but allows for comfortable fingerstyle playing as well, with mid-tones that you don't have to fight to pull out of the guitar, even with bare fingers.

Another clear advantage to Huss and Dalton's guitars are their use of Adirondack Spruce for top bracing. Adirondack has a greater strength-to-weight ratio than other brace woods, thus allowing for a more efficient transfer of energy through the top, making the entire guitar more responsive.

This 2010 Huss and Dalton TDR is in absolute pristine condition with little to no wear to note. Original Hardshell Case included.

SOLD: Pre-Owned: 2010 Collings 290 “TV Edition” Yellow with TV Jones Pickups

2010 Collings 290

Change the channel.... A solid body 50's inspired electric guitar in TV Yellow, that has two TV Jones pickups in it? Well, why not? This is the "TV" edition of the Collings 290!

Bill Collings is admittedly building some of the finest acoustic guitars that have ever been built. When he decided to take on the challenge of building electric guitars, this may have seemed an easier task. Electric guitars have no bracing, no acoustic waves to study, and acoustic players are known to be a finicky bunch when compared to our electric brethren. Well, 70 prototypes and a year later, he finally felt that he had built the electric guitar that he wanted to build. Redesigning electric guitars in the process and setting the new standard for fit, finish, innovation, and most importantly tone!

The Collings 290 is named after the highway that runs through the Austin hill country and takes you to Collings workshop. Although it may look like a traditional model with it's one "Spanish" cutaway and two humbuckers, look a little deeper and appreciate the features this guitar brings to the table.

The Body is a select piece of mahogany that has two ergonomic cuts on the back of the guitar, one for the area where the guitar rests against your ribcage and "forms" against it, and one on the lower bout to accommodate sitting down and playing the guitar. The leg cutout makes practicing or doing a session easy as it molds to your leg, and the other, makes standing and playing a gig a pleasure as the guitar fits comfortably against your body.

The Neck joint has been redesigned to join the body on an angle allowing for easy access to the upper frets. The neck joins at the 17th fret on the bass side but on the treble side it joins at the 19th fret. The wood used is select Mahogany that was typically used on the great instruments of the 50's and 60's. This select wood has more mass, and therefore it is more rigid, but responds better than any guitar you have played, and is not in any way "neck heavy."

This custom 2010 Collings has a "TV" Yellow finish on the body, and the neck as well. A back story for your consideration: This special yellow color was designed in the 1950s to solve the problem of the color white, under the glare of bright television lights, overpowering the black and white television cameras. Get ready for your close up Mr. Deville, because this guitar belongs on TV!

The TV Edition Collings features twin Tom "TV" Jones Filter-tron Classic pickups, instead of the standard two humbuckers. TV Jones has been building such fine quality reproductions of Gretsch type pickups that they started using his creations in all of their high end guitars. These pickups reproduce the look, feel, and tone of the classic 50's Gretsch guitars heard on many a Nashville session recording. Because this is one of the early 290 Tv Edition's the pick ups do have black pickup rings which the newer models do not have.

This 2010 Collings 290 Tv Jones is in excellent condition, with just a few small scratches to the top and back. There are also a few impressions, or "dents" on the back of the guitar that are NOT through the finish and can be seen in the detailed photographs below. Original Hardshell Case included.

SOLD: Pre-Owned: 2006 Weber Beartooth A-Style Mandolin

2006 Weber Beartooth A-Style Mandolin

Originally located in Bozeman Montana, now Logan, Bruce Weber and his crew of skilled craftspeople have been building phenomenal modern versions of the traditional F- and A style mandolins since 1997, and can trace the origins of the company to the original Flatiron Mandolin company.

The Weber Beartooth was named for the rugged Beartooth mountain range in South Central Montana. This range contains Montana's highest peak, Granite Peak, at 12,799 feet. It is also part of the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness Area which encompasses the lower 48's largest single expanse of land above 10,000 feet.

The Beartooth features a gloss finished top, which sweetens the tone a bit compared to a satin top.  The top is hand carved Spruce with beatiful Maple back and sides.  This top of this Weber Mandolin is very responsive without requiring a heavy pick attack.  Combined with maple the tone is incredibly warm with a smooth high end and punchy midrange.  When "chopping" chords for rhythm, this mandolin has that desirable "crack" that drives every Bluegrass jam and could cut through any mix.

To complete the package, this Weber Beartooth also features grained ivoroid bindings and gold tuners with pearloid buttons.  These additional features really make this 2006 Weber Beartooth stand out, with a very classy and traditional appearance.

This 2006 Weber Beartooth is in excellent condition and hard to distinguish from new. There are a few light scratches to the top and back that we did our best to capture in the detailed photographs below. Original Hardshell Case included.

SOLD: Pre-Owned: 1990′s Bourgeois OM240 Sitka Spruce and Indian Rosewood

1990's Bourgeois OM240 Sitka Spruce and Indian Rosewood

Dana Bourgeois is a self-taught luthier know for his exceptional craftsmanship and incredible attention for detail. Dana's passion for guitars began in front of the television in 1964 when The Beatles captured his attention on The Ed Sullivan Show. Dana's interests grew in the pages of a well known book, Classic Guitar Construction, by Irving Sloan, and began to mature in Dana's own imagination.

1993 marked the year of the grand opening of Dana Bourgeois guitars in Lewiston, Maine and was the culmination of Dana's guitar building expertise to that point.  "The thing that I always wanted to do," he says, "was take the proven concepts that made traditional guitars great and add to that certain modern concepts and make a better guitar-a blend of traditional and modern." In an unfortunate turn of events Dana Bourgeois Guitars had a fallout with one of his international distributors which led to the closing of Dana Bourgeois guitars in 2000.

In October of 2000 Dana and a set of new business investors came together to form pantheon guitars. Dana was in his 25th year of building guitars and up to that point had hand crafted over 1,000 of the finest acoustic instruments played by musicians all over the globe. Part of Pantheon's mission is to be the best "small shop" acoustic guitar builder in the world and Dana, working full time at the helm of his small crew, has the opportunity to focus on designing and building instruments of the highest quality and making Bourgeois guitars the best they can be.

This 1990's Bourgeois OM is a pre-pantheon Dana Bourgeois build featuring a Sitka Spruce top with Indian Rosewood back and sides.  This guitar is well broken in and the playability is incredible, with low action and a highly responsive.  Because this guitar is well over a decade old, the tone is incredibly open and sounds almost as if it were a vintage instrument.

Sitka Spruce is a top tonewood that is favorable for many players, as it is one of the most versatile tonewoods available. In regards to stiffness, Sitka is much more flexible than Adirondack, therefore exhibiting increased responsiveness and a richer low end when played at moderate levels. While not quite as powerful for the heaviest of pickers, Sitka lends itself quite nicely for fingerstyle playing as well, allowing you to cover much more musical playing styles than an Adirondack dreadnought will be capable of... not to mention that many players simply don't play hard enough to comfortably drive an Adirondack top. Sitka Spruce is in many ways the perfect compromise!

We are not 100% sure of this Bourgeois OM240's actual build year, around 1995 there was a fire that destroyed records regarding serial number information. For an instrument that is 15+ years old this guitar is in remarkably good condition! There are some minor finish scratches on the top, back, and sides.  There are also a few dents on the headstock and body as shown in the detail photos. On the sides of the guitar there were a few minor scratches that we were not able to photograph. Original Hardshell case included.

SOLD: Pre-Owned: 2007 Collings 001 Sitka Spruce and Mahogany

Hear This Instrument: 2007 Collings 001 Sitka Spruce and Mahogany
Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
2007 Collings 001 Sitka Spruce and Mahogany

Collings' offers the 00 in its original, 12-fret configuration, a guitar shape that was first designed around the time of the Civil War. Its dimensions are similar to a typical classical guitar, with a slotted headstock and small pyramid bridge. The comfortable size and timeless appearance of the Collings 00 is matched by the ease of playing a wide neck and shorter string scale affords. The tone is balanced and precise, and we've seen it adopted for a wide range of playing styles from simple vocal accompaniment to ragtime solos. When you want the durability of a modern guitar but one that appears rooted in an earlier, simpler time, the Collings 00 is the perfect choice.

The topwood on this guitar is Sitka Spruce, which is very versatile and known for it's lush bass response and easy playability.  The back and sides are mahogany, which produces clear and distinct notes and is very well appreciated in the recording studio, as it is known to be a bit more balanced in front of a microphone than rosewood. A surprising amount of low end means chords are rich and lush, balancing the clear high end of the Mahogany back and sides quite nicely.  This guitar is quite responsive whether played soft or loud... it maintains balance throughout the dynamic spectrum.

This 2007 Collings 001 is in excellent condition with just a few light scratches and small dings to the top, none of which are through the finish. Original Hardshell Case included.

SOLD: Pre-Owned: 2010 Huss and Dalton Custom OMC European Spruce and Koa with Cutaway

Hear This Instrument: Huss and Dalton Koa Cutaway
Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
2010 Huss and Dalton Custom OMC European Spruce and Koa with Cutaway

Huss and Dalton applies the same building style to their OM as they do their standard dreadnoughts. The top is built with a 25" radius. A positive by-product of the radiused soundboard design, besides its load bearing properties, is a boost in the mid-range without overpowering the bass and trebles.  This design function is showcased in this guitar – boasting unsurpassed tonal balance.

This custom 2010 Huss and Dalton OM-C Cutaway features a European Spruce top with nicely figured Koa back and sides and maple binding.  Huss and Dalton has done an incredible job at selecting the Koa for this guitar and the resulting instrument is even nicer than we had hoped.  Tonally, the guitar is a bit warmer than you would expect out of a Koa guitar.  The trebles are warm and pleasant, with just enough sparkle.  The European Spruce top responds well to a variety of playing styles, from fingerstyle to moderate flatpicking.

This 2010 Huss and Dalton OMC is in absolute pristine condition and is hard to distinguish used from new. Original Hardshell Case included.

SOLD: Pre-Owned: 2011 Collings D2HG German Spruce with Adirondack Bracing and Indian Rosewood Back and Sides No Tongue Brace

Hear This Instrument: Collings D2HG German Spruce and Indian Rosewood
Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
2011 Collings D2HG German Spruce with Adirondack Bracing and Indian Rosewood Back and Sides No Tongue Brace

The square-shouldered 14-fret dreadnought is the most popular steel-string acoustic guitar body shape in the world. While Collings is certainly not the first to build them, they bring a new tonal clarity to the depth and warmth usually associated with such a large, deep-bodied guitar. Although its bass response makes the dreadnought ideal for vocal accompaniment, Collings versions are also often employed by bluegrass flatpickers who must compete with inherently louder instruments such as banjos and fiddles. The wide range of woods and neck sizes offered allow dreadnought fans to find a Collings model ideally suited to their playing style and tonal preference.

This 2011 D2HG is always an instant shop favorite, featuring a German Spruce top, Adirondack Spruce bracing, and no tongue brace.  We love German Spruce here at Artisan because it not only offers a rich and complex tone, but is versatile for many different playing styles.  German Spruce offers exceptional stiffness together with low weight making the tops more responsive.   We often find German to be a perfect compromise between Sitka and Adirondack, since it responds so well to fingerstyle playing and also holds up to a heavy pick attack.

Accompaniments like the Adirondack bracing and the removal of the tongue brace make this guitar that much more menacing.  Adirondack Bracing offers a more efficient transfer of string energy to the top, since Adirondack is much stiffer than the standard Sitka braces.  This allows for a more responsive and powerful sound board.

We are also a big fan of leaving the tongue brace out of these instruments.  As people search for the mythical tone of old guitars, this brace comes into scrutiny. Martin added the tongue brace in 1940 and it has become standard every since. The absence of a tongue brace frees the top to allow enhanced vibration and results in a richer, fuller, tone with more low end resonance.  It is speculated that Martin added the brace to prevent top cracking, but the years have proven this to have been unnecessary and actually decreases resonation.

Incredibly hard to distinguish used from new, this 2011 Collings D2H is in absolutely pristine condition. There are a few very light scratches on the back that can be seen in the photographs below. There was a strap button installed on the heel of this guitar and has since been removed and professionally repaired at Glaser's here in Nashville. It is such a well done job, it was unable to be even photographed! The  Original Hardshell Case included.

SOLD: Pre-Owned: 2006 Fender Custom Shop 1963 Dakota Red Stratocaster Limited Edition 36 out of 48

2006 Fender Custom Shop 1963 Dakota Red Stratocaster Limited Edition 36 out of 48

While Fender has been around since the late 1940's, the Fender Custom shop has only been creating their visions of Leo Fender's iconic instruments since 1987. The custom shop is made of a small group of select craftspeople who re-create, and re-invent some of Fender's most famous instruments.

This magnificent guitar, the first of Fender's Guitar Center Vintage Collector Series, is a stunning limited-edition replica built exclusively for Guitar Center in honor of their 42nd anniversary and based on an instrument found in the world-famous Vintage Room at Guitar Center Hollywood.

Master Builder Dennis Galuzka crafted only 42 of these remarkable replicas, this model was the 36th built out of those 42. Each guitar is finished in a spectacular Dakota Red over three-color sunburst Relic lacquer. A rare Brazilian rosewood fingerboard completes this historically accurate masterpiece.

"Dennis Galuszka began building high-end acoustic guitars during his 13 years as a cabinetmaker, combining his passions for music and woodworking. As a self-taught drummer, it was a fateful audition with one of the Fender master builders that led to a job interview (and a steady gig). Hired as an apprentice, he was promoted to master builder in 1999. Galuszka has since built instruments for many influential players, including country legend Buck Owens and jazz master Robben Ford.

With an eye for detail and a keen imagination, Galuszka built a series of clever one-offs, including a Record Stratocaster® guitar with a record player tone arm tremolo, a pickguard customized from a real vinyl album, and fret marker inlays resembling plastic yellow 45 record adapters. His matching pair of surf guitars (a Stratocaster® and Precision Bass® guitar) built for the 2003 NAMM Show featured a long board body graphic and a custom decal."

Besides the typical wear of a "Relic" guitar this 2006 Relic Stratocaster is in excellent condition and looks as if it just came out of Fender's Custom Shop, as the detailed photographs will indicate. The original Hardshell case is included with case candy.
