The Bourgeois Soloist Bearclaw Italian Spruce Top with Macassar Ebony Back and Sides

The combination of Macassar Ebony and Bearclaw Italian Spruce from Dana Bourgeois is a shop favorite here at Artisan, so we were overjoyed to see that a very special instrument was planned for the Winter 2012 NAMM show in Anaheim. Fresh from it's review at Acoustic Guitar magazine (more on that later), we are proud to receive this powerhouse guitar!

Here is what Dana Bourgeois had to say about the Soloist: "Many years ago, inspired by Eric Schoenberg, I built what I believe was the first OM having a style of cutaway that has since become something of a modern classic. Eric and I later founded a company to produce the new model, which we named "The Soloist", after an elegant fingerstyle guitar from the Victorian era. Years later, Eric and I agreed to produce separate versions of the Soloist. Aside from a handful of one-off examples, however, this is the first time I have offered the Soloist as a regular model.

Often times we come across guitars that almost look too gorgeous to play. But, when it comes to Maccasar Ebony, you just won’t be able to help yourself. Macassar Ebony boasts a lot of presence with a broad dynamic range. It has a strong bass, lower mids, and incredible sustain. When coupled with a Bearclaw Italian Spruce top, there is a significant amount of sweet, crisp, and bright tone. Each note carries with complexity and richness.

This is the actual instrument that will be featured in the upcoming Acoustic Guitar magazine article on Boutique Luthier's highly appointed select OM style guitars. Dana has always been fond of the OM size, and is one of the preeminent designers, as well as modern interpreters of the traditional Orchestra model size.  He and his select crew have certainly outdone themselves on this instrument!

Fingerstyle players will appreciate the ease of articulation across the entire fretboard, while flatpickers will appreciate the ample headroom and ability to be played a bit harder without a hint of breaking up. Dana has built a versatile workhorse that plays like dream and is very comfortable for lounging while sounding like a guitar much larger. It is effortless to play, whether in the low regions of the instrument, or chordal excursions higher up the fretboard. This is the true "Swiss Army Knife" for many reasons. Stunning in appearance and in tone, you might find yourself forsaking all others for this one!

SOLD: Collings O2HBRA Adirondack and Brazilian Rosewood

Hear This Instrument: Collings O2H Adirondack and Brazilian
Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
Collings O2HBRA Adirondack and Brazilian Rosewood

It’s been more than several years since Collings has built Brazilian guitars for their broader group of authorized dealers. We are pleased to announce a very limited run of new Brazilian model Collings – possibly their last.

It is our privilege to introduce this limited run of Brazilian models with our 02H, featuring an Adirondack Red Spruce sound board, Adirondack forward shifted bracing, and Brazilian Rosewood back & sides.  The Collings Crew continues to amaze us with their challenge of building a small bodied guitar yet with such a powerful voice.

Insiders know, ever since Artisan Guitars became a Collings dealer we have been champions of the Collings “0” model as one of the most delightfully surprising
guitars in their catalog.  So much fun they should be illegal, these guitars always bring a smile to an unsuspecting new acquaintance.

This guitar has the responsiveness of a small bodied guitar, yet the volume and clarity of a large body guitar. The first thing that you will notice about this guitar is its impressive bass response that belies its small stature. The Adirondack spruce bracing helps to further stiffen the top, adding lighting fast note response to your individual lines.

Brazilian Rosewood combines the attributes of the two most common back and side woods, Indian Rosewood, and Mahogany. Brazilian has the ability to provide lushness of Indian Rosewood, while never sacrificing the individual note clarity you get from Mahogany. This guitar is a recording engineer’s dream! All of this is wrapped up in a guitar that you will feel comfortable sitting on the couch playing for hours, recording on music row, or playing on any stage. Simply, yet elegantly appointed, this is a true family heirloom for  generations to come.

Should you have interest in future Brazilian models from Collings, please give us a call or send us an email… We are currently taking reservations for the limited number of guitars we may be allocated within this special run.

SOLD: Collings D1A Adirondack Spruce and Mahogany

Collings D1A Adirondack Spruce and Mahogany

Here is another fantastic Collings D1A featuring an Adirondack Spruce top, rich Mahogany back and sides, and a custom order 1 3/4" nut width for those who prefer a bit wider neck.

This D1A screams with rich, clear, and powerful tone. The Mahogany back and sides are perfect for players who find rosewood too boomy. Lead players will appreciate the enhanced note definition and clarity, especially through the midrange frequencies. Famous flatpicker Clarence White reportedly used a D-18 for most of his solos, which has Mahogany back and sides, even though he is known for making the rosewood D-28 the famous monster it is today. This D1A would excel at that task, providing even further note definition than most old D-18s!

This D1A is also very loud. The player of this fine instrument will have no issue being heard in acoustic jams. It is a cannon that will cut through a jam session, yet can still sound sensitive and lyrical on fingerpicked tunes.

Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
2011 National Collegian Galaxy Blue Steel Body with Bullethole Coverplate

There is an art to reproducing guitars from a by-gone era in today's day and age. The folks at National have certainly proven that they can not only faithfully recreate models, but update them tastefully and even improve upon them. Last year we after months of research between San Luis Obispo and Nashville, National Resophonic and Artisan Guitars were pleased to re-introduce the National "Collegian" to the world!

The National Collegian is a steel-body, 14 fret instrument.  It was originally introduced in the late 30's as a student model, with a value price to match. It was essentially a Duolian with a simpler coverplate. Instead of a "sieve" coverplate featured on the guitars of the time, the Collegian had two concentric rings of holes with 18 holes in each ring. These "bullet-hole" cover plates made these resonators stand out from the crowd, also lending a unique sound to the instrument.   There is a mojo to this guitar not seen since the days before the big War.

Yes, it cuts like steel can only cut, but the Collegian has a roundness to it that echoes brass in it's warmth. Chords are rich and complex with slight overtones, for a pronounced note quality that allows it to shine when played with one of our Diamond Slides. It sustains, and has a beautiful roundness to each tone.  From National's 1941 Collegian ad: " Their tone quality and volume surpass that of any non-electric in this price field. They possess amazing sustaining power, with bell clear harmonics and smooth, vibrant volume: yet they really have commanding 'punch' for the professional."  This year our friends at National are making Artisan a National Collegian in a new "Galaxy Blue" finish.

This Pre-Owned 2011 Blue Collegian is in absolute pristine condition with no scratches, dings, or fretwear to note.

SOLD: Collings CL Jazz Thinline Archtop Merlot Finish Lollar Johnny Smith-Style Pickup

Collings CL Jazz Thinline Archtop Merlot Finish Lollar Johnny Smith-Style Pickup

Thin, light, and exquisite, the Collings City Limits Jazz commands attention. Built with a fully hollow one-piece mahogany body, carved European spruce top, and modern stylings, this sleek thin-bodied archtop is made for jazz.

Collings achieves unmatched tone and response out of this archtop with the use of innovative bracing patterns.  The carved European Spruce top is cross braced on the inside, much like a flat-top, as opposed to bar bracing, which is traditional for archtops.  Each brace must be carved to match the inside of the arch.  Bill wanted a more dynamic flat-top response and he has certainly met his goal with the City Limits Jazz.

The pickup is a Jason Lollar hand-wired Johnny Smith style humbucker.   The pickup is mounted to the pickguard and floats beautifully at the base of the fretboard.  Discreet volume and tone controls are found on the bottom edge of the pickguard so that they don't detract from the ultra-clean lines of such a beautiful guitar.   A custom merlot finish completes the package, revealing just enough of the incredible European Spruce grain patterns.

SOLD: National ResoPhonic NRP Black Rust Steel 14 Fret

National ResoPhonic NRP Black Rust Steel 14 Fret

National's Black Rust NRP looks like it just came out of the swamp, perfectly suited for those hot southern blues licks. This National features the new color, Black Rust and the finish is quite stunning. Nationals have been played by many blues legends, but they definitely were not playing one with a finish like this. No two of the Black Rust finishes are alike. The best part is, you don't have to wait 50 years for a vintage finish, you can have one right now!

Each Black Rust instrument is finished with a multi-staged hand-textured finish for an individual look and semi-smooth surface profile. Capturing the look and feel of an original 14 fret National Duolian, the thin-gauge steel body is highlighted by rolled "f" holes, a formed back, and period-correct, traditional ribbed coverplate. Each mahogany neck clears 14 frets to the body and features an unbound ebony fretboard complete with mother of pearl position markers. Vintage style plain tuners, ebony nut, and "National" stamped headstock complete the look of this classic.

With the ebony fretboard and the ebony nut, notes practically jump of the fretboard and chase that hell-hound on your trail down. Classic blues fingerpicking sounds like it is coming from a porch in Mississippi on a hot summer evening. Authentic in it's tone and in it's appearance, the Black Rust NRP drives itself to the Delta!
