The dimensions of Collings' 001HE are similar to the original design first introduced around the Civil War. The comfortable size and timeless appearance of the Collings 00 is matched by the ease of playing a wide neck and shorter string scale affords. The tone of a typical 00 is balanced and precise, and we've seen it adopted for a wide range of playing styles from the singer/songwriter fair to ragtime solos - but it really sings when used for fingerstyle. With this in mind, we ordered this guitar with a few custom features with the discerning fingerstylist in mind.
This 001HE is built with an Engelmann Spruce top. Engelmann is the one of the softest spruces used in guitar making, a quality that lends itself to light playing. As opposed to Sitka, Engelmann Spruce has much broader and stronger overtones, with an effortless response due to its weight. Another custom feature is the herringbone top trim, generally reserved for rosewood backed guitars. The herringbone trim allows the top to vibrate a bit more freely providing even further responsiveness and that "broken in" feeling.
The tone of this guitar is very rich with lots of volume for an Engelmann Spruce guitar. The Collings sound definitely shines on this instrument, with clear highs and a punchy, round midrange. The herringbone tends to balance the tone of the mahogany quite nicely, providing increased low end resonation without losing the clarity of mahogany.
Custom visual appointments include tortoise binding on the headstock, fretboard, and body. When combined with the herringbone trim, this guitar has a look that is to die for!
