Adirondack Spruce Top over “Bubbled” Maple Back & Sides, Natural Blonde High Gloss Lacquer Finish, Tortoise Bindings, Nickel Tuners with Ebony Buttons, List Price $3500
From Collings Press Release:
This custom MT2 mandolin was built with a spectacular piece of what we refer to as "bubble" or "blister" maple. Similar to birdseye maple, which is a phenomenon typically found in the harder eastern maples, bubble maple has striking figure with a three dimensional appearance that changes as light reflects off the end grain of the wood fibers. Aside from its unique appearance, the tone produced can be characterized as tightly focused with even balance across the tonal spectrum (similar to sugar maple). This mandolin has a powerful chop, precise attack, and loads of volume ... qualities which are often found only in F-style mandolins, which have greater body mass.
In order to better showcase the beauty of the woods, we opted for a custom tangerine sunburst over our typical cremona sunburst. After all, who would want to cover up the beautiful even grain of the Adirondack top and magnificent silking? For the trim, we used tortoise-style bindings for the body neck and peghead instead of the standard grained ivoroid. We find that the dark speckled appearance of the binding creates a nice accent against the lighter edges of the sunburst and ties in well with the understated ebony tuner buttons. All in all, this mandolin makes for a fine custom example of one of our favorite models.
