National ResoLectric Biscayne Blue with a Lollar P90

From time to time we are privileged to receive custom or "One-Off" instruments from National ResoPhonic, and every single time we are simply blown away with their quality and choice of appointments, or in this case the Finish! When we first opened the case of this Custom ResoLectric we were mesmerized by the very mellow yet hypnotic Biscayne Blue finish. To compliment the finish National also finished the headstock in Biscayne Blue which we believe compliments the finish perfectly. We have seen many of the standard burst Resolectric's and Revolver's here in our shop and would have never thought about this guitar in blue, but we are incredibly pleased to have this unique guitar in the shop and hope to see more like it in the future! Biscayne Blue, for you classic car aficionados, was part of the paint line up for the 1954 Chevy line up, and as you can see, is a gorgeous shade of deep, almost iridescent blue.

The ResoLectric has gone through a few changes in its 19 years of production. The current model uses an audiophile-quality Highlander preamp to mix both the magnetic and piezoelectric pickups. A Jason Lollar P-90 pickup sits in the neck position, and a Highlander piezo transducer is fitted under the saddle. The output of each pickup is controlled by independent volume knobs, with a master volume knob to control the instruments overall output level. A 3-way toggle switch selects which pickups are active. The solid mahogany body is capped with a figured maple top bound in ivoroid and finished off with a  gorgeous pearloid pickguard. The figured maple neck clears 14 frets to the body, highlighted with a diamond inlaid, rosewood fretboard.

The Lollar P90 in the neck has a fat, singing lead voice that is perfectly suited for slide players looking for the ultimate in classic Electric blues tones. The Piezo sounds like an acoustic national, only perfectly amplified. You have a myriad of tones at your fingertips, which makes it easy to switch between a preset rhythm and lead sounds. I do believe I'll dust my broom!

National Triolian WB Wood Body

Hear This Instrument: National Triolian WB Wood Body Single Cone Resonator
Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
National Triolian WB Wood Body

We've received another 12-fret National Triolian in all its... wooden glory? That's right, my friends, the always daring folks at National have yet again introduced another replica with painstaking detail and accuracy. Hanging on the wall, it looks like any other steel body Triolian we have seen - even down to the "rolled" edge stylings around the body. But once you pick it up, it's light as a feather.

Each uses a maple-laminate body which is hand painted in walnut-burst with matching steel coverplate. The maple neck features an ivoroid-bound rosewood fretboard complete with inlaid mother-of-pearl position markers. A nickel plated tailpiece highlights the unique look of this wood body guitar.

National NRP Wood Body Duolian Green Sunburst

Hear This Instrument: National NRP Wood Body Duolian Green Sunburst
Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
National NRP Wood Body Duolian Green Sunburst

The NRP Wood Body with the Duolian Green Sunburst is an affordable USA made reproduction of the original Duolian, featuring a traditional non-ribbed sieve-hole coverplate and a hand painted Green burst to capture the look of the famed original. This particular model features a maple body, capturing that classic wood bodied resonator tone. The mahogany neck clears 12 frets to the body and features an unbound ebony fretboard - appointed with inlaid mother-of-pearl position markers. Being the traditionalists they are, National completed the look and feel by adding an ebony nut and plain black knob tuners.

This NRP has a warm, rich tone thanks to the the wood body.  Just enough reverberation gives rhythm and lead lines just enough magic without losing clarity.  The single cone puts out plenty of volume making sure you are heard, whether on the street corner or on stage.

National El Trovador Wood Body Single Cone

Hear This Instrument: National El Trovador Wood Body Single Cone
Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
National El Trovador Wood Body Single Cone

The famous El Trovador was produced by the National Stringed Instrument Corp. It was the highest quality wood body guitar that National ever made. These guitar bodies were slightly larger than the traditional proportioned National guitars.  Designed in collaboration with Mike Dowling, this single cone guitar is patterned after the famous El Trovador produced from 1932-1933. Similar to its predecessor, National’s El Trovador guitar features a large, deep body constructed of mahogany. The body is bound in multi-layer celluloid, with a matching purfling border around the coverplate. A wood soundwell houses the resonator. An ebony fretboard is mated to a solid mahogany neck, capped with a rosewood fretboard overlay. The El Trovador’s unique voice makes it one of National’s most popular wood body guitars and a shop favorite, time and time again.

The tone of the El Trovador is much larger and fuller than the other wood body Nationals, thanks to the deeper body.   When compared to the metal bodied Nationals, the wood bodies are much warmer with a bit more controlled reverberation.

About our Luthiers: Smith and Young Spider Cone Guitars

About our Luthiers: Smith and Young Spider Cone Guitars

We are proud to introduce the newest line of instruments from the Smith and Young Stringed Instruments division of National, the Smith and Young Spider Cone guitars!

There is an art to reproducing guitars from a by-gone era in today's day and age. The folks at National have certainly proven they can not only faithfully recreate historic models, but also update them tastefully with modern day technology & materials that offer improvements.  Today's National ResoPhonic is a constantly evolving company, which is always trying new ideas, reissuing classic models, and pushing the envelope as far as tone is concerned.

For many years, National ResoPhonic has been in research and development of the original Dobro's, as those models were part of the fabric and historic beginning of the original National company founded in 1927.  This is the instrument that spawned an entire industry, a sound, and inspired a tone like nothing else.  The Dobro company was founded in 1929 by brothers John Dopyera, Rudy Dopyera, Ed Dopyera, and Vic Smith. The name "Dobro" represents an early acronym for the Dopyera Brothers, thus: Dobro.

The name Dobro was never intended to mean a specific instrument, like a banjo, or mandolin, however, over the years, the name Dobro became synonymous with any squareneck spider-bridge resonator guitar, held in the lap, and played with a bar in open tunings, rather than fretting the strings on a fretted fingerboard.

Over the years the Dobro company changed ownership many times, and was shuttered from 1942 to 1954, bought by Semi Mosely, then lost, and finally bought by Gibson.

Fast forward to today's modern era National ResoPhonic instruments, located in San Luis Obispo, where founder Don Young started his company in 1989.  Having worked for the Dopyera brothers several times during his career, Don is uniquely qualified to recreate these iconic guitars.  We are proud to introduce the newest line of Spider-Cone guitars from Smith & Young Stringed Instruments!

Smith & Young Stringed Instruments

Their new catalog of instruments includes both round neck & square neck models, offering both a light guage steel body spider-cone dubbed the Model 1 & wood body spider-cones in the Model 11.

National El Trovador 12-String Single Cone Mahogany Resonator Guitar

Hear This Instrument: National El Trovador 12 String
Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
National El Trovador 12-String Single Cone Mahogany Resonator Guitar

This single cone guitar was patterned after the famous El Trovador produced in limited production in 1932 and 1933. The laminated mahogany body is similar to it's predecessor and features a large, 4" depth and a narrow waist that makes it more comfortable to play than a larger waisted guitar. The folks at National resophonic first re-introduced the National El Trovador 6 string, now we are pleased to have the 12 string version. Designed in collaboration with famed National player Mike Dowling, this model needs no amplification!

Blind Willie McTell and Leadbelly certainly saved the 12 string from being added to the annals of history. We have to believe that if they were around now, they would be adding this cannon to their arsenal. Wood body resonators have a mellow, warm tone and coupled with the huge bottom end that the deeper El Trovador body style provides, this guitar is the biggest 12 string sound we have ever heard!

Strummed this guitar is un-imaginably loud, yet it responds remarkably well to fingerpicked passages, and chords have a complex depth to them that you don't get from 6 strings. Slide players will love how the wood body helps their long notes sustain, however their bass note runs are well defined and never muddy.

The El Trovador is bound in multi layer celluloid, with a touch of class in the matching purfling around the coverplate. The ebony fretboard is mated to a solid Mahogany neck, capped off with a Rosewood Headstock overlay. The vintage-style engraved open gear tuners add to the authenticity of this model, while the "El Trovador" badge singles this model out. Grab this 12 string and Let the Midnight Special shine it's ever-lovin' light on you!

National Triolian

National Triolian

In 2009 National introduced the Triolian 12-Fret. The National Triolian captures the look and feel of the late 1930’s W-Series Triolians.  The name refers to the original cone design of the first 12 prototype models, which had a single cone top covering up a tri-cone setup inside. They kept the name, even after switching to a single-cone design for the production models.

The thin-gauge steel body is highlighted by flat cut “f” holes, a formed back, and traditional sieve-hole coverplate.  Each body is hand painted in walnut-burst to capture the look of the originals.  The maple neck clears 12 frets to the body and features an ivoroid-bound rosewood fretboard complete with inlaid mother-of-pearl position markers.  Tuners are vintage-style engraved, open gear.

This Triolian  is loud, punchy, and brash without being harsh on the ears. The signature sound of the early models of the 30’s were made famous by Delta Blues players such as Blind Boy Fuller and these current models will blow the originals out of the water. If you are a Delta Blues piedmont style player, look no further… this is your instrument!

National El Trovador Baritone Single Cone Wood Body

National El Trovador Baritone Single Cone Wood Body

The National El Trovador Baritone guitar features a large, 4" deep body constructed of mahogany. Tuned C to C standard from the factory, this 27" scale instrument caters to those who need lower tunings, or are looking for a unique tool for the belt. The bellowing and rich tone the Baritone exhibits is sure to inspire even the most blocked and burnt out players. The neck has slightly larger profile (1.925") than the standard El Trovador and uses a heavier gauge set of strings, but still plays, feels, and responds like a National should.

Tuners are vintage-style engraved, open gear. The ebony fretboard is mated to a solid mahogany neck, capped with a rosewood headstock overlay with an "El Trovador" badge in lieu of the National. We had a feeling this guitar would be a hit, and oh what a hit it is!
