Collings D2H Herringbone Sitka Spruce and Indian Rosewood

Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
Collings D2H Herringbone Sitka Spruce and Indian Rosewood

The square-shouldered 14-fret dreadnought is the most popular steel-string acoustic guitar body shape in the world. While Collings is certainly not the first to build them, they bring a new tonal clarity to the depth and warmth usually associated with such a large, deep-bodied guitar. Although its bass response makes the dreadnought ideal for vocal accompaniment, Collings versions are also often employed by bluegrass flatpickers who must compete with inherently louder instruments such as banjos and fiddles.

The standard D2H is ideal for players who find Adirondack Red Spruce too stiff for their style. Sitka Spruce is a versatile topwood that accentuates the warm round aspects of the guitar's tone. Indian Rosewood is warm and rounded with complex overtones. The D2H is a powerful dreadnought without any compromise.

Collings OM1ASB Adirondack Spruce and Mahogany

Hear This Instrument: Collings OM1ASb Adirondack Spruce top with Sunburst finish and Mahogany Back and Sides
Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
Collings OM1ASB Adirondack Spruce and Mahogany

The Collings OM1A is a classic Collings model and a shop favorite. OM stands for Orchestra Model, but 80 years after this body shape was first designed it has become the most popular 14-fret model with fingerstyle guitar soloists who choose to play on steel strings.

This OM1A packs a serious punch, with killer volume and presence - easily acting as a dreadnought alternative. The OM1A has a superb balance and clarity, each note stands out. The Adirondack top adds a tremendous amount of headroom, crisp trebles, and gut-punching mids. It takes to a flatpick beautifully, but sings with bare fingers as well. You know the feeling when you're holding that guitar? - this is that guitar.

This Collings OM1ASB features a couple custom appointments such as a 1 3/4" nut width which gives you plenty of room for complex chord shapes. The standard Tortoise-style binding on the body is complimented by the custom sunburst top perfectly, providing a very classy finishing touch.

Collings I-35 Deluxe Custom Dark Cherry

Collings I-35 Deluxe Custom Dark Cherry

Bill Collings' and his shop in Austin, Texas has been building some of the finest acoustic guitars for decades and has recently turned his attention to electric guitars. The result has been nothing short of astonishing. He has reinvigorated the industry with his take on classic design. The Collings I-35 is their reinterpretation of the semi-hollow body, two-pickup guitar.

While the rest of the industry at large uses pressed plywood for their backs, and bent sides, Collings carves the back and sides from one single slab of Mahogany. This preserves the "look" of a semi-hollow bodied guitar while providing noticeable sonic differences to the player's ears. The top is carved from a  mineral flamed piece of book matched maple. This not only looks more like the "original" late 50's and early 60's instruments, but more importantly, sounds like an older guitar.

Collings collaborates with Jason Lollar for all their pickup designs. While the particular pickups they use are specially wound to Collings specifications, they are very near in design to the Lollar standard Imperial Humbucking models. Lollar manages to capture the airy top end, tight lows, balanced midrange, and complex overtones of the best original PAF pickups.

In reviews, they are consistently given high marks for their balanced frequency response. Unbalanced coils keep the bottom end tight for the intense richness the pickups provide, as overtones build after each note is played. Alnico 5 magnets are de-gaussed to specific levels, unique to the neck and bridge positions.

The sound Collings has developed with these pickups can certainly be described as mature. The neck position pushes out a lovely warmth and depth – ideal for jazz chording or chunky blues. None of the pesky midrange honkiness that can be found with bridge humbuckers is present. The bridge pickup is certainly hotter and more aggressive, but maintains full-bodied presence without any harshness. One reviewer had this to say about the pickups, "As they're pushed, they react with a smooth compression without becoming excessively bright."

The mahogany neck is superior quality wood and topped off with a Rosewood Fretboard with vintage style "dot" inlays. The profile is a comfortable "C" shape with rounded edges, giving it a wonderful, broken in feel. Leaving no detail untouched, the bridge and tailpiece are Tone-pros locking style, and the Gotoh tuners have grained-ivoroid buttons. You owe it to yourself to come in and plug this guitar into any of our Carr amplifiers and finally stop searching for the "tone", it has arrived!

Collings MF Sunburst Ivoroid Binding

Hear This Instrument: Collings MF Sunburst Ivoroid Binding
Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
Collings MF Sunburst Ivoroid Binding

The MF is a world class mandolin with simplified appointments featuring a gloss top as well as a satin finish on the back and sides and, on this particular instrument, custom ivoroid binding . With a fully carved Adirondack spruce top and maple back and sides, the MF is built with the same quality construction as Collings fully-appointed models.

The custom gloss top on this custom Collings MF produces a tone we've come to expect out of Collings Mandolins... it is rich, thick and meaty with lots of punch and a great chop. The satin finish on the back and sides not only looks incredible but produces a tone that is wide open, and woody that really compliments the tone that the gloss top produces. Playability on Collings' mandolins are hard to beat, and this one plays like a dream with low action and surprising responsiveness.

The custom Ivoroid binding on the body and bound ebony pickguard make for a very classy look, complimenting the custom gloss sunburst top perfectly. The Adirondack Spruce top is especially nice on this instrument, with large grain and a wide open sound.

Collings C10 Sitka Spruce and Mahogany Custom Sunburst

Hear This Instrument: Collings C10 Sitka Spruce and Mahogany Custom Sunburst
Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
Collings C10 Sitka Spruce and Mahogany Custom Sunburst

Based on guitars first introduced around the same time as the OM, the Collings C10 is a leaner alternative, with the narrow waist and small upper bout resulting in a precise, focused response.  The smaller upper bout is gratifying and a true dream to play. It's this unique body size that allows the C10 to project a more focused mid-range then other smaller bodied guitars. This mid-range is combined with a crisp low-end and rounded, mellow trebles.  Of all the acoustic models Collings produces, the C10 is perhaps the easiest for electric guitarists to adapt to, thanks in part to the more rounded neck profile.

The Collings C10 comes standard with a Sitka Spruce top and Mahogany back and sides. Sitka  is ideal for players who find Adirondack Red Spruce too punchy, bright, and stiff - but do not want to sacrifice on clarity. Sitka Spruce is a versatile topwood that accentuates the warm round aspects of the guitar's tone. The top end is sweet and crisp; with a driving, focused midrange and low-end. It strums with the best of them, but has a neck that flatpicks beautifully across the board. There is a reason Colling's are revered for their C10's!

Although this instrument bares a resemblance of a C10 Deluxe, this is a standard C10 with custom appointments such as, 1 3/4" nut width which gives you plenty of room for complex chord shapes. The standard ivoroid binding  on the body are complimented by the custom sunburst top perfectly, providing a very classy finishing touch. This guitar also features upgrade Nickel Waverly tuners.

Collings City Limits Deluxe Quilt Top Iced Tea Sunburst with Jason Lollar Humbuckers and Wraparound Bridge

Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
Collings City Limits Deluxe Quilt Top Iced Tea Sunburst with Jason Lollar Humbuckers and Wraparound Bridge

Bill Collings has been making some of the most highly regarded acoustic guitars in the world for quite some time, so when he decided to build electric guitars, musicians were chomping at the bit to see what would happen. The flawless construction, the incredible attention to detail, and the Collings quality are all here. Collings has redesigned a classic guitar with players in mind and the now famous meticulous construction, and attention to detail is nothing short of astonishing. This City Limits Deluxe with a Premium Quilted Maple top, is the ultimate Les Paul and with Lollar Humbuckers, this guitar was born for rock and roll!

From Collings' website: "Crafted with the finest seasoned maple and mahogany, the CL Deluxe is built for tone. Lightweight, resonant mahogany combined with a carefully hand-set mortise and tenon neck joint bring tonal complexity and sustain to the table in spades. Sleekly contoured for comfort and style, we've brought new life to an American classic." We, honestly, could not agree more. The CL Deluxe is clearly influenced by classic American solidbodies of the past, and to say they hit their mark is an understatement.

The body is cleverly designed with ergonomic contouring at both sides of the waist. This commonly overlooked feature is quite brilliant, making already effortless playability even more comfortable. Weighing in at a just over 8 lb., the CL Deluxe is easy to manage and perfectly balanced. Whether on the stage or in the studio, the CL Deluxe feels right at home. The neck profile is a well rounded C shape that is unique to the Collings lineup. The neck joint is angled toward the cutaway; following the body lines. This slight change fills your hand in a more natural way, easing the curse that other single cutaway guitars have. Playability is what we have come to expect from a Collings - effortless and untroubled up and down the fingerboard. Combine that with Collings reputation for intonation perfection - and you have a force to be reckoned with.

Collings has collaborated with Jason Lollar for all their pickups. While the particular pickups they use are specially wound for Collings, they are darn close to his standard Imperial Humbuckers. Lollar manages to capture the airy top end, tight lows, balanced midrange, and complex overtones of the best original PAF pickups. In reviews they are consistently given high marks for their balanced frequency response. Unbalanced coils keep the bottom end tight for the amount of fullness the pickups have, overtones build after each note is played. Alnico 5 magnets are de-gaussed to specific levels, unique to the neck and bridge positions. The sound Collings has developed with these pickups can certainly be described as mature. The neck position pushes out a lovely warmth and depth - ideal for jazz chording or chunky blues. None of the pesky midrange honkiness that can be found with bridge humbuckers is present. The bridge pickup is certainly hotter and more aggressive, but maintains full-bodied presence without any harshness. Use of the individual volume and tone knobs to balance and pair the two pickups against one another yields a practically endless variety of voices and tones.

Collings is renowned for their nitro finishes on acoustic guitars - and the story remains the same here. The finish on the CL Deluxe is nothing short of perfect - incredibly thin and flat as can be. The thin nitro finish allows this guitar to breathe and resonate like the aged vintage pieces of old. The unplugged acoustic qualities the CL Deluxe exhibits are simply remarkable. It's the little considerations like this that will satisfy even the most discerning of vintage fans. The beautiful quilted Maple top is hand-sprayed with a flawless iced tea sunburst, giving it an instant classic LP look. Aesthetic balance is a bit of a passion for Mr. Bill Collings, and each of his electrics exhibit their own understated style - unique from model to model. The fit and finish of the CL Deluxe may be astonishing to some - but it is what we have come to expect from the folks at Collings. No detail is left incomplete, yet nothing is overdone or exploited. The body is bound with grained ivoroid, a refreshing change from blindingly stark white plastic. The truss rod cover, tuning buttons, pickup knobs and covers all share this same material - and its one of the many features that set Collings apart.

Collings 02HG German Spruce and Indian Rosewood

Hear This Instrument: Collings 02HG German Spruce and Indian Rosewood
Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
Collings 02HG German Spruce and Indian Rosewood

With the exception of the Baby, the 0 is the smallest guitar from Collings and is offered with the same shorter scale found on the 12-fret 00. Although measuring only 13.5 inches in width (smaller than a typical classical guitar), the Collings 0 has tone and volume that belies its first impression as being less than full-sized. It can double as a travel guitar or a small OM, performing both roles equally well. The same neck and woods options offered with larger Collings models are available on the 0 as well, giving players an almost infinite range of tonal possibilities.

Collings Single 0 series guitars are always highly impressive, projecting an almost unbelievable sound that is full of low end with an overall tone that is focused, powerful, and highly responsive.  This 02HG is no different.

German Spruce, a special appointment on this guitar, provides a rich, complex tone and is the perfect topwood for many players who play fingerstyle as well as flatpick. German Spruce is stiffer than Sitka, providing more headroom and power, yet more flexible than Adirondack so that it responds well to a lighter attack.

Other appointments include a custom nut width of 1 3/4" for those who find the standard 1 11/16" a bit too wide for their playing style.

This guitar is very responsive and will suit the needs of fingerstyle players very well.  The German top can also take an impressive amount of flatpicking, though the 0 body size is more suited to players with a lighter touch.  Tone is very clear with a vibrant and pleasant high end and just enough lows to balance the tone across the fretboard.

Collings CW Adirondack and Mahogany

Hear This Instrument: Collings CW Adirondack and Mahogany
Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
Collings CW Adirondack and Mahogany

Collings states that the CW is named after the famous Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, Kansas. But based on the enlarged soundhole and dalmatian pickguard; we believe the CW may share the initals of a certain bluegrass hero. We just got this preowned model is stock, and it is every bit as loud as our new one!

The CW is the result of numerous requests and custom orders by Collings players for a dreadnought ideal for flatpicking. The Adirondack Red Spruce top is bracing with scalloped Adirondack bracing, while the tongue brace is left out. These core changes hark back to the way early 14-fret dreadnoughts were built. The bracing pattern and construction allows for even more headroom, projection, and explosive volume then a typical dreadnought - making it a flatpicker's dream. Allow me to put emphasis on just how loud this guitar is - it's just incredible! The power and strength this guitar boasts is unmatched - easily cutting through any bluegrass circle you can find. We opted for the mahogany version of the famed CW this time around, and we were rewarded with crisp, defined, airy notes that jump out with clarity and projection. A bit of playing has helped to mellow it out a touch, a quality that will only get better with some love and playing.

The CW pays homage to the distinct characteristics of famous dreadnoughts in the world of bluegrass. The body is bound in tortoise and graced with a striking dalmatian style pickguard. The fingerboard is also bound in tortoise, but is left simple with no inlay. A true powerhouse and not for the faint of heart, but not to be missed by serious flatpicking pros!

Collings UC1K Koa Concert Ukulele

Hear This Instrument: Collings UC1K Koa Concert Ukulele
Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
Collings UC1K Koa Concert Ukulele

As with everything that comes out of the Colling shop, lots of homework and research have gone into their line of ukuleles. The Collings UC1K is built with custom Light Flame Koa and produces a tone that is clearly defined and extremely resonant. Koa produces a warm, rich and still very defined sound – between the darker sounds of Rosewood and the clean bright sound of Maple. On the first strum, it's clear this is a serious, professional level ukulele.

Despite looking like traditional friction tuner, each of the four tuners are actually geared tuning pegs made by Pegheadz. Collings be praised, a ukulele that is easy to tune! The 4:1 gear reduction allows strings to be tuned more easily and accurately than traditional wood pegs (or Caspari-type mechanisms which require screw drivers or special keys). Tune confidently and securely with the left hand while playing open strings; even during performance! PEGHEDS tuners return the fine-tuning function to pegs. Strings slide more freely over the smooth, wide nut than over the comparatively sharp edge of the bridge, where stress is concentrated and equilibrium of tension on either side is more difficult to achieve.
