SOLD: Pre-Owned: 2006 Collings D2H Standard Sitka and Indian Rosewood

2006 Collings D2H Standard Sitka and Indian Rosewood

The venerable Dreadnought design has been around since the 1930's, and for good reason. The size of the instrument produces more volume which allowed the guitar to be heard in groups often featuring louder instruments such as banjos or mandolins. Collings has taken an old design and brought new life to the design. There is a clarity and muscularity to voice of their instruments that makes them a favorite among new players.

Collings' standard D2H has been revered by instrumentalists and aficionados since it's introduction. The top of the guitar is select Sitka spruce which provides ample power for leads while still being able to handle fingerpicking with ease. The Indian Rosewood used on the back and sides brings a warmth and a deep bass response. This guitar has a knack for vocal accompaniment, and yet, can still be used in a Bluegrass setting and heard loud and clear.

This particular D2H has opened up beautifully since it's 2006 build date. Bass runs are big and defined, trebles are singing and bell like, while the mids are mellow and complement the other two perfectly. The 1-11/16" nut width is a standard nut width, also for good reason. Lead lines are fast and fluid, and chord changes are lighting fast. There are a few minor scratches near the pickguard and on the back, none are through the finish. There is also a small "ding" on the headstock overlay and shown in the detail photograph. Original Hardshell case included. Read More »

SOLD: Collings D2HA Madagascar Rosewood and Adirondack Spruce with Varnish Finish

Collings D2HA Madagascar Rosewood and Adirondack Spruce with Varnish Finish

Collings has offered Madagascar Rosewood in the past, but short supplies have made them a rare treat as of late. It is a spectacular tonewood that is making its mark as one of the best Brazilian alternative for our generation of luithers. We have managed to reserve four custom guitars built with this stunning wood, each one has been equally spectacular!

Madagascar Rosewood has commanding presence with balanced tone and clarity. Madagascar is evenly responsive across the entire tonal register and has crisp, sparkling trebles commonly associated with Brazilian Rosewood.  When coupled with Adirondack Red Spruce, it brings the guitar strong fundamentals, a lightning quick response, and crisp trebles.

Adirondack Spruce was the legendary topwood used on most pre-war American-made guitars and has a high stiffness to weight ratio across and along the grain, making it one of the go-to topwoods for flatpickers.

To make this particular guitar that much more incredible, we have custom ordered it with a hand-rubbed varnish finish.  The varnish process takes a lot more time, both in application and drying, and is certainly not conducive to volume production. The difference in tone, however, makes the process worth the trouble. The varnish creates a faster response with warmer trebles and a greater overall dynamic range.  The low end is amplified while maintaining stunning clarity and definition.

We have taken this one to the next level, by adding Adirondack bracing and removing the tongue brace. These core changes hark back to the way early 14-fret dreadnoughts were built. The bracing pattern and construction allows for even more headroom and projection then the standard model – making it the ultimate flatpicker’s dream. This particular piece is fully bound from headstock to body in grained ivoroid and is built with a 1 3/4" standard profile neck.

SOLD: Collings D2HA Varnish with Adirondack and Indian Rosewood

Collings D2HA Varnish with Adirondack and Indian Rosewood

The D2HA is a standard model in our shop. It has commanding presence with balanced tone and clarity. The Indian Rosewood brings the guitar balance and warmth; which when coupled with Adirondack Red Spruce brings the guitar strong fundamentals, a lightning quick response, crisp trebles, and virtually unlimited headroom. Adirondack was the legendary topwood used on most pre-war American-made guitars. Adirondack has a high stiffness across and along the grain, making it one of the go-to topwoods for flatpickers. The D2HA is a guitar you take to battle, the guitar you fight for.

How do you make the D2HA even better?  Add custom options such as Adirondack Bracing, removing the tongue brace, add a custom 1 23/32" nut width, and one the finest features,  finishing the guitar with Varnish.  Thinner than nitrocellulose lacquer, the varnish finish is more flexible and allows the wood to resonate more, significantly smoothing out the mids and highs while extending the low end considerably.   The tonal qualities produced by the varnish finish are amazing, especially when compared side by side to a guitar without it.

The Adirondack Bracing offers a more efficient transfer of string energy to the top, since Adirondack is much stiffer than the standard Sitka braces.   This allows for a more responsive and powerful sound board.

We are also a big fan of leaving the tongue brace out of these instruments.  As people search for the mythical tone of old guitars, this brace comes into scrutiny. Martin added the tongue brace in 1940 and it has become standard every since. The absence of a tongue brace frees the top to allow enhanced vibration and results in a richer, fuller, tone with more low end resonance.  It is speculated that Martin added the brace to prevent top cracking, but the years have proven this to have been unnecessary and actually decreases resonation.

Collings has offered Madagascar Rosewood in the past, but short supplies have made them a rare treat as of late. The Collings Jumbo, or CJ, is Colling's version of the classic slope-shouldered dreadnought, a shape that has enjoyed renewed popularity in recent years. It even suits fingerstyle players.

Madagascar is evenly responsive across the entire tonal register and has crisp, sparkling trebles commonly associated with Brazilian Rosewood. When coupled with Adirondack Red Spruce; it brings the guitar strong fundamentals, a lightning quick response, and crisp trebles. Adirondack was the legendary topwood used on most pre-war American-made guitars. We have taken this one to the next level, by adding Adirondack bracing and removing the tongue brace. SOLD: Pre-Owned: 2006 Collings CWBaaaA with Brazilian Rosewood and Adirondack and Large Soundhole

2006 Collings CWBaaaA with Brazilian Rosewood and Adirondack and Large Soundhole

The Collings Winfield is a reissue of the famous Collings Clarence White model. Clarence White lead the way in presenting the acoustic guitar as a lead instrument in bluegrass music. It features an enlarged soundhole, bringing more projection improves the listening experience for both player and audience; and the absence of the tongue brace - which helps bring even more resonance and volume. It also features a ebony bridge with 2 1/4 string spacing and a cutthrough saddle.

The folks at Collings are renowned at bringing the world some of the finest instruments ever produced. We have had our share of unique, great sounding instruments from them, and this 2006 CW in Brazilian is one of the finest!

Collings describes the Winfield on their website as: "a highly modified version of our standard dreadnought that features options commonly requested by flatpicking specialists. The combination of the stiff Adirondack spruce top with enlarged soundhole, supported by a top bracing pattern based on the earliest 14-fret dreadnoughts, make the CW a bluegrass powerhouse. Everything about this model is designed to provide plenty of headroom and projection for aggressive playing, but not at the expense of good tone.

The Brazilian back and sides on this instrument is exceptional. It is listed as aaa but these days this might be considered aaaa Brazilian. The grain is straight, true and rich in color. The Adirondack top has started to yellow beautifully and has opened up in the years since it's birth.

The Tone is exactly what you would expect from Collings and a Brazilian to boot. Full rich basses are complemented by clear, singing trebles that sustain for days. The enlarged soundhole removes some of the "woofy" basses that so often plague larger instruments, especially in the recording process. The enlargement allows you to tailor the sound by placing a mic a bit closer to the soundhole with much less proximity effect, resulting in a more immediate and balanced sound, often heard on Tony Rice recordings. Chordal runs are clear and concise, individual notes are distinct, and single note solos are loud and defined. The removal of the tongue brace allows the top to resonate freely which makes this guitar a Bluegrass no brainer!

It features the standard nut width on the CW models which is 1-23/32". This nut size is in between the 1-11/16th and 1-3/4" standard sizes we are all so used to seeing. It makes single note runs a breeze and gives your fingers the room to chord easily. We have liked the nut width so much here at the store we have made more than a few guitars with this custom order option.

As Brazilian Rosewood is in short supply and no one really knows how much will be available in the years to come, this is an instrument that is sure to climb in rarity and value. Get your Brazilian now, because once it's gone, it's gone!

This Guitar is in exceptional condition. There are no scratches, dings, nicks anywhere on the guitar. It comes with the original Collings hardshell case.

Collings D2HA w/ Adirondack Red Spruce Top

The D2HA is a standard model in our shop. It has commanding presence with balanced tone and clarity. The D2HA is a guitar you take to battle, the guitar you fight for.

While Collings is certainly not the first to build 14-fret dreadnoughts, they bring a new tonal clarity to the depth and warmth usually associated with such a large, deep-bodied guitar. The 1 11/16" nut width is typical for dreadnoughts, and gives a closer spacing for quick flatpicking runs. This is the real deal, boys and girls.

SOLD: Collings Custom 02E w/ Engelmann Spruce Top

Collings Custom 02E w/ Engelmann Spruce Top

We have ordered a number of 01s as of late - and we still can't get over just how much projection and volume these little darlins' kick out! This one is no exception, but with a beautiful responsiveness and warmth to fingerstyle. Collings guitars have always been revered for their signature tone and their ever-apparent high quality construction.

This 02E is built with an Engelmann Spruce top. Engelmann is the one of the softest spruces used in guitar making, a quality that lends itself to light playing. As opposed to Sitka, Engelmann Spruce has much broader and stronger overtones, with an effortless response due to its weight. While this guitar may not have as much headroom as a standard 02E, it easily makes up for it in responsiveness - a perfect quality for fingerstylists and light players. This sweet little thing has a warm, rich tone with that signature Collings' volume.

SOLD: Collings 290 Electric “TV Edition” with TV Yellow Finish and TV Jones Pickups

Collings 290 Electric

Change the channel.... A solid body 50's inspired electric guitar in TV Yellow, that has two TV Jones pickups in it? Well, why not? This is the "TV" edition of the Collings 290!

Bill Collings is admittedly building some of the finest acoustic guitars that have ever been built. When he decided to take on the challenge of building electric guitars, this may have seemed an easier task. Electric guitars have no bracing, no acoustic waves to study, and acoustic players are known to be a finicky bunch when compared to our electric brethren. Well, 70 prototypes and a year later, he finally felt that he had built the electric guitar that he wanted to build. Redesigning electric guitars in the process and setting the new standard for fit, finish, innovation, and most importantly tone!

The Collings 290 is named after the highway that runs through the Austin hill country and takes you to Collings workshop. Although it may look like a traditional model with it's one "Spanish" cutaway and two humbuckers, look a little deeper and appreciate the features this guitar brings to the table.

The Body is a select piece of mahogany that has two ergonomic cuts on the back of the guitar, one for the area where the guitar rests against your ribcage and "forms" against it, and one on the lower bout to accommodate sitting down and playing the guitar. The leg cutout makes practicing or doing a session easy as it molds to your leg, and the other, makes standing and playing a gig a pleasure as the guitar fits comfortably against your body.

The Neck joint has been redesigned to join the body on an angle allowing for easy access to the upper frets. The neck joins at the 17th fret on the bass side but on the treble side it joins at the 19th fret. The wood used is select Mahogany that was typically used on the great instruments of the 50's and 60's. This select wood has more mass, and therefore it is more rigid, but responds better than any guitar you have played, and is not in any way "neck heavy."

This custom Collings has a "TV" Yellow finish on the body, and the neck as well. A back story for your consideration: This special yellow color was designed in the 1950s to solve the problem of the color white, under the glare of bright television lights, overpowering the black and white television cameras. Get ready for your close up Mr. Deville, because this guitar belongs on TV!

The TV Edition Collings features twin Tom "TV" Jones Filter-tron Classic pickups, instead of the standard two humbuckers. TV Jones has been building such fine quality reproductions of Gretsch type pickups that they started using his creations in all of their high end guitars. These pickups reproduce the look, feel, and tone of the classic 50's Gretsch guitars heard on many a Nashville session recording.

We couldn't wait to plug this guitar into a Carr Mercury amp, (that just happens to look like an old TV). This guitar has one of the best neck pickups we've ever heard! Adam didn't want to put the guitar down when those luscious slightly overdriven tones came falling out of the amp. The bridge has "the" twang tone to put all others to shame. Rock-a-billy, country, swing, jazz, and the list can go on and on, this guitar just sounds as good as it feels & looks! We don't guarantee an appearance on the Ed Sullivan show, but you will more than "look the part!"
