Collings MT2 Mandola with Tortoise Bindings and Bound Pickguard

Collings MT2 Mandola with Tortoise Bindings and Bound Pickguard

We are very pleased to offer another Collings MT2 Mandola featuring a gloss sunburst top and gloss flamed maple back and sides, finished off by a tortoise bound ebony pickguard.  This instrument can be smooth and sweet or powerful and dominant, depending on how it's played.  Everything we love about Collings masterbuilt mandolins is present in this Mandola,  magnified by the much larger body and lower tuning, offering smooth response and playability with rich low end and clear, pleasing trebles.

Adirondack Spruce is the featured topwood on this mandola, offering virtually unlimited power and crystal clear treble.  Flamed maple back and sides is a classic wood for the back and sides of mandolin family instruments, offering a bright, punchy, immediate tone.  The 2 piece flamed back of this instrument is gorgeous, especially when set off by the tortoise bindings and ebony pickgaurd.  Come and play this instrument today... you won't regret it!

Collings 290 Crimson Finish with Dual Lollar P90 Pickups and Collings’ Wrap Around Bridge

Collings 290 Crimson Finish with Dual Lollar P90 Pickups and Collings' Wrap Around Bridge

Bill Collings is admittedly building some of the finest acoustic guitars that have ever been built. When he decided to take on the challenge of building electric guitars, at the onset, this may have seemed an easier task. After all, electric guitars have no bracing, no acoustic waves to study, and acoustic players are known to be a finicky bunch when compared to our electric brethren. Well, 70 prototypes and a year later, he felt he had finally formulated the electric guitar he would want to build. In the process he conceptualized the iconic electric guitar in a new light, developing a new standard for fit, finish, innovation, and most importantly tone!

Like all of their electric models, the Collings 290 is named after a highway that runs through the Austin hill country and takes you to Collings workshop. Although it may look like a traditional model with it’s single “Spanish” cutaway and two humbuckers, look a little deeper and appreciate the features this guitar brings to the table.

The body is crafted from select piece of dense mahogany that has two well thought out ergonomic cuts on the back of the guitar, one for the area where the guitar rests & conforms to your ribcage (in the waist of the body), and the other in the lower bout to accommodate resting on your knew when sitting down. The leg cutout makes practicing or doing a session easy as it conforms to your leg, and the other, makes standing and playing a gig a pleasure as the guitar fits comfortably against your body.

The neck joint has been uniquely designed to join the body at an angle, allowing easier access to the upper frets. The neck joins at the 17th fret on the bass side, & at the 19th fret on the treble side. The neck is also crafted from select Mahogany that was typically used on what today are considered investment grade instruments of the 50’s and 60’s. This dense mahogany offers more mass, more rigidity & continuity from neck through the body. It responds better than any guitar you have may have ever played, and is extremely well balanced in your hands.

This Crimson Red 290 has two select Jason Lollar P-90 pickups. The P-90 is a single coil electric guitar pickup first produced by Gibson in 1946. They were introduced to replace the "bar pickup" (aka the Charlie Christian pickup) in models like the ES-150. Towards the end of the 40's P90's were the main pickup used on all models, including the Les Paul introduced in 1952. The P-90, in general, will be brighter and more transparent than a humbucker. They feature a boosted mid-range and some of the twang of Fender single coil pickups yet with more output and fullness. Typically P90's are clean at low volumes and have plenty of bite when pushed. One downside to the P90 is the 50 Hz / 60 Hz cycle "hum" which can be caused by external electrical and magnetic fields... not a problem with P90 makers such as Lollar, who offers a reverse wound version of the pickup, which doesn't hum when the guitar is kept the middle position.

Copied from Sean Costello's '53 Goldtop, these Lollar 50's Style P-90s have lower output, more delicate attack, less midrange and bass, and are "scatter wound" with a degaussed (or slightly weakened) Alnico 5 bar magnets. They have a fat P-90 tone with a smooth treble response, having more of an old p-90 sound, rather than a new pickup that sounds hard or harsh. Overall tone is brighter with less of a grind to the distortion quality and is slower to overdrive an amp than the stock P-90 set. Players have re-discovered their love of P90's for their creamy, rich tones and 6L6 amps do love a P90, and for good reason. Some of the best tones ever put to wax, that's right wax, were P90's!

To add to the straight ahead vintage tone and vibe of this 290, Collings has developed a custom Collings wraparound tailpiece that delivers unsurpassed dynamic range and tonal versatility with a very simple and classic design.  This new tailpiece has intonation built in, actually "machined" in.  It's difficult to see, even in person, but they have successfully intonated a true wrap-around bridge!

NOTE: This guitar is a deep, rich red color.  The displayed color of the pictures may vary depending on your monitor calibration.

Collings D2HA Adirondack Spruce and Indian Rosewood with Flourish Headstock Inlay

Collings D2HA Adirondack Spruce and Indian Rosewood with Flourish Headstock Inlay

The Collings D2HA is a standard model in our shop. It has commanding presence with balanced tone and clarity. The Indian Rosewood brings the guitar balance and warmth; which when coupled with Adirondack Red Spruce brings the guitar strong fundamentals, a lightning quick response, and crisp trebles. Adirondack was the legendary topwood used on most pre-war American-made guitars. Adirondack has a high stiffness across and along the grain, making it one of the go-to topwoods for flatpickers. The D2HA is a guitar you take to battle, the guitar you fight for.

While Collings is certainly not the first to build 14-fret dreadnoughts, they bring a new tonal clarity to the depth and warmth usually associated with such a large, deep-bodied guitar.

This custom D2HA features a 1 3/4" nut width and a flourish headstock inlay.

Collings D2HSb Sitka Spruce and Indian Rosewood with Sunburst Top

Collings D2HSb Sitka Spruce and Indian Rosewood with Sunburst Top

The square-shouldered 14-fret dreadnought is the most popular steel-string acoustic guitar body shape in the world. While Collings is certainly not the first to build them, they bring a new tonal clarity to the depth and warmth usually associated with such a large, deep-bodied guitar. Although its bass response makes the dreadnought ideal for vocal accompaniment, Collings versions are also often employed by bluegrass flatpickers who must compete with inherently louder instruments such as banjos and fiddles.

The standard D2H is ideal for players who find Adirondack Red Spruce too stiff for their style. Sitka Spruce is a versatile topwood that accentuates the warm round aspects of the guitar's tone. Indian Rosewood is warm and rounded with complex overtones. The D2H is a powerful dreadnought without any compromise.

This custom Collings D2HSb features a gorgeous sunburst top, instantly separating it from the rest!

Collings OM2H Sitka Spruce and Indian Rosewood

Collings OM2H Sitka Spruce and Indian Rosewood

‘OM’ stands for “Orchestra Model,” but 80 years after this body shape was first designed it has become the most popular 14-fret model with fingerstyle guitar soloists who choose to play on steel strings… yet with custom German Spruce top, flatpickers also find it very appealing with virtually unlimited headroom and power when you need it.

The compact shape makes the Collings OM2H equally easy to handle onstage or when sitting on the couch. The tone is focused and powerful, as are all Collings' guitars.

The topwood on this guitar is Sitka Spruce, paired with rosewood back and sides.  This is a classic combination that is highly versatile for many playing styles.  Sitka can be played fingerstyle or with a flatpick and can excel at both.  It is ideal for flatpickers who don't require the stiffness of Adirondack, offering more volume and responsiveness from a lighter touch.  When combined with rosewood on the back and sides, Sitka is very lush and has a warm, rich low end.  The highs are also crystal clear on a Collings, since only the highest grade Sitka Spruce is chosen for their instruments.  You really can't go wrong with this model!

Collings 290 Walnut Finish – Single Lollar Dog-Ear P90 – Collings Wrap-around Bridge

Collings 290 Walnut Finish - Single Lollar Dog-Ear P90 - Collings Wrap-around Bridge

A tribute to the early pre-'61 Melody Makers, we have commisioned this custom 290 from Collings with a single hand-wired P-90 from Jason Lollar and 2 controls, 1 volume and 1 tone,  for the ultimate in simplicity.   The pickguard was custom designed to match this configuration and looks no less than stunning against the rich grained mahogany.  The walnut stain makes this guitar look like a dream, allowing the natural beauty of the mahogany to be the showcase.

The Body is crafted from select piece of dense mahogany that has two well thought out ergonomic cuts on the back of the guitar, one for the area where the guitar rests & conforms to your ribcage (in the waist of the body), and the other in the lower bout to accommodate resting on your knee when sitting down.

The neck is also crafted from select Mahogany that was typically used on the what today is considered investment grade instruments of the 50’s and 60’s. This dense mahogany offers more mass, more rigidity & continuity from neck through the body. It responds better than any guitar you have may have ever played, and is extremely well balanced in your hands.

We are truly amazed by what this single pickup guitar has to offer! It is capable of producing a vast array of tones, from pristine clean tones rich with harmonic complexity to hard-hitting vintage rock tones with enough focused growl to cut through any mix. Dial back the volume and tone, and you'll be surprised by the smooth, mellow tones that are available without ever getting muddy. The lollar pickup has a fat P-90 tone with a smooth treble response, having more of a vintage sound, rather than a new pickup that sounds hard or harsh. Overall tone is brighter with less of a grind to the distortion quality and is slower to overdrive an amp than a standard P-90 set.  This instrument will put tone back in the hands of the player, not in the hands of effect pedals or multi-channel amps.

Collings 290

Change the channel.... A solid body 50's inspired electric guitar in TV Yellow, that has two TV Jones pickups in it? Well, why not? This is the "TV" edition of the Collings 290!

Bill Collings is admittedly building some of the finest acoustic guitars that have ever been built. When he decided to take on the challenge of building electric guitars, this may have seemed an easier task. Electric guitars have no bracing, no acoustic waves to study, and acoustic players are known to be a finicky bunch when compared to our electric brethren. Well, 70 prototypes and a year later, he finally felt that he had built the electric guitar that he wanted to build. Redesigning electric guitars in the process and setting the new standard for fit, finish, innovation, and most importantly tone!

The Collings 290 is named after the highway that runs through the Austin hill country and takes you to Collings workshop. Although it may look like a traditional model with it's one "Spanish" cutaway and two humbuckers, look a little deeper and appreciate the features this guitar brings to the table.

The body is a select piece of mahogany that has two ergonomic cuts on the back of the guitar, one for the area where the guitar rests against your ribcage and "forms" against it, and one on the lower bout to accommodate sitting down and playing the guitar. The leg cutout makes practicing or doing a session easy as it molds to your leg, and the other, makes standing and playing a gig a pleasure as the guitar fits comfortably against your body.

The neck joint has been redesigned to join the body on an angle allowing for easy access to the upper frets. The neck joins at the 17th fret on the bass side but on the treble side it joins at the 19th fret. The wood used is select Mahogany that was typically used on the great instruments of the 50's and 60's. This select wood has more mass, and therefore it is more rigid, but responds better than any guitar you have played, and is not in any way "neck heavy."

This custom Collings has a "TV" Yellow finish on the body, and the neck as well. A back story for your consideration: This special yellow color was designed in the 1950s to solve the problem of the color white, under the glare of bright television lights, overpowering the black and white television cameras. Get ready for your close up Mr. Deville, because this guitar belongs on TV!

The TV Edition Collings features twin Tom "TV" Jones Filter-tron Classic pickups, instead of the standard two humbuckers. TV Jones has been building such fine quality reproductions of Gretsch type pickups that they started using his creations in all of their high end guitars. These pickups reproduce the look, feel, and tone of the classic 50's Gretsch guitars heard on many a Nashville session recording.

We couldn't wait to plug this guitar into a Carr Mercury amp, (that just happens to look like an old TV). This guitar has one of the best neck pickups we've ever heard! Adam didn't want to put the guitar down when those luscious slightly overdriven tones came falling out of the amp. The bridge has "the" twang tone to put all others to shame. Rock-a-billy, country, swing, jazz, and the list can go on and on, this guitar just sounds as good as it feels & looks! We don't guarantee an appearance on the Ed Sullivan show, but you will more than "look the part!"

Collings CJ Sunburst Jumbo Sitka Spruce and Indian Rosewood

Collings CJ Sunburst Jumbo Sitka Spruce and Indian Rosewood

The CJ Jumbo is Bill Colling's version of the classic slope-shouldered dreadnought, a shape that has enjoyed renewed popularity in recent years. This Collings CJ Sunburst Jumbo is no exception!  While the CJ is similar in width and depth to the traditional dreadnought, it has a distinctly different tone. The CJ accommodates a variety of playing styles and genres without skipping a beat. It even suits fingerstyle players.

Of all the Collings body shapes, this is the one most often requested with a sunburst top finish - and who are we to argue. The sitka top is highly responsive and also looks great underneath the sunburst finish. It also features a gorgeous Brazilian rosewood headstock overlay, the grain of which matches perfectly with the bound "mini-haircut" style headstock.

Collings SJ Cutaway Sitka Spruce and Indian Rosewood

Hear This Instrument: Collings SJ Cutaway Sitka Spruce and Indian Rosewood
Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
Collings SJ Cutaway Sitka Spruce and Indian Rosewood

The SJ is Collings' version of what is commonly called a small Jumbo. Although the 16 inch lower bout is slightly wider than a dreadnought, and the sides almost as deep, the tight curve at the waist creates in a very different sound chamber. SJs typically have a more pronounced midrange response when compared to a dreadnought, which translates into more note definition. Players looking for the bass and overall volume of a large guitar, but with lots of treble clarity and midrange crunch, often find just what they need in the curvaceous Collings SJ.

Like most all Collings, this guitar has more than ample volume and presence.  Featuring a Sitka Spruce top over Indian Rosewood back and sides, the tone is immediately responsive to fingerstyle and light strumming while being able to withstand moderate flatpicking and strumming with ease.

This SJ is a natural strummer, with clear chords that sound remarkably balanced with all the power you could ever hope for.  Fingerstyle lines are also quite nice, offering a surprising amount of headroom from an Sitka topped guitar.  The cutaway allows access to the highest frets with ease, while also adding to the appearance of the guitar. The body, fretboard and headstock are bound in grained ivoroid with a Style 3 backstrip on the back.  The Brazilian Rosewood headstock overlay looks especially nice on this SJ, with rich dark grain variations set off by the Ivoroid binding.

Winter NAMM 2011 Photos

We will be posting more photos from our NAMM visit as we get them processed.  In the meantime, here are a few of our cell phone pics.  Some highlights for us were the RA-3 ResoLectric Acoustic from National, the Varnish Slope D from Bourgeois, Huss & Dalton's 15th Anniversary Model, and the Baritone and Mandocello from Santa Cruz!  Collings had some archtops on display that took our breath away, as well as a hand-rubbed satin varnish mandolin!
