Collings City Limits Deluxe Quilt Top Iced Tea Sunburst with Jason Lollar Humbuckers and Wraparound Bridge

Bill Collings has been making some of the most highly regarded acoustic guitars in the world for quite some time, so when he decided to build electric guitars, musicians were chomping at the bit to see what would happen. The flawless construction, the incredible attention to detail, and the Collings quality are all here.

Collings has redesigned a classic guitar with players in mind and the now famous meticulous construction, and attention to detail is nothing short of astonishing. This City Limits Deluxe with a Premium Quilted Maple top, is the ultimate Les Paul and with Lollar Humbuckers, this guitar was born for rock and roll!

From Collings' website: "Crafted with the finest seasoned maple and mahogany, the CL Deluxe is built for tone. Lightweight, resonant mahogany combined with a carefully hand-set mortise and tenon neck joint bring tonal complexity and sustain to the table in spades. Sleekly contoured for comfort and style, we've brought new life to an American classic." We, honestly, could not agree more. The CL Deluxe is clearly influenced by classic American solidbodies of the past, and to say they hit their mark is an understatement.

The body is cleverly designed with ergonomic contouring at both sides of the waist. This commonly overlooked feature is quite brilliant, making already effortless playability even more comfortable. Weighing in at a just over 8 lb., the CL Deluxe is easy to manage and perfectly balanced. Whether on the stage or in the studio, the CL Deluxe feels right at home.

The neck profile is a well rounded C shape that is unique to the Collings lineup. The neck joint is angled toward the cutaway; following the body lines. This slight change fills your hand in a more natural way, easing the curse that other single cutaway guitars have. Playability is what we have come to expect from a Collings - effortless and untroubled up and down the fingerboard. Combine that with Collings reputation for intonation perfection - and you have a force to be reckoned with.

Collings has collaborated with Jason Lollar for all their pickups. While the particular pickups they use are specially wound for Collings, they are darn close to his standard Imperial Humbuckers. Lollar manages to capture the airy top end, tight lows, balanced midrange, and complex overtones of the best original PAF pickups. In reviews they are consistently given high marks for their balanced frequency response. Unbalanced coils keep the bottom end tight for the amount of fullness the pickups have, overtones build after each note is played.

Alnico 5 magnets are de-gaussed to specific levels, unique to the neck and bridge positions. The sound Collings has developed with these pickups can certainly be described as mature. The neck position pushes out a lovely warmth and depth - ideal for jazz chording or chunky blues. None of the pesky midrange honkiness that can be found with bridge humbuckers is present. The bridge pickup is certainly hotter and more aggressive, but maintains full-bodied presence without any harshness. Use of the individual volume and tone knobs to balance and pair the two pickups against one another yields a practically endless variety of voices and tones.

Collings is renowned for their nitro finishes on acoustic guitars - and the story remains the same here. The finish on the CL Deluxe is nothing short of perfect - incredibly thin and flat as can be. The thin nitro finish allows this guitar to breathe and resonate like the aged vintage pieces of old. The unplugged acoustic qualities the CL Deluxe exhibits are simply remarkable. It's the little considerations like this that will satisfy even the most discerning of vintage fans.

The beautiful quilted Maple top is hand-sprayed with a flawless iced tea sunburst, giving it an instant classic LP look. Aesthetic balance is a bit of a passion for Mr. Bill Collings, and each of his electrics exhibit their own understated style - unique from model to model. The fit and finish of the CL Deluxe may be astonishing to some - but it is what we have come to expect from the folks at Collings. No detail is left incomplete, yet nothing is overdone or exploited. The body is bound with grained ivoroid, a refreshing change from blindingly stark white plastic. The truss rod cover, tuning buttons, pickup knobs and covers all share this same material - and its one of the many features that set Collings apart.

Collings City Limits Maple vs Mahogany Cap Comparison

While a gorgeous flamed maple top is traditionally found on most Les Paul style guitars, we are excited to have two City Limits Deluxe models on our rack with identical specs except for the Mahogany cap on one of them. Having these two guitars in the shop at once, we just had to do a comparison recording to compare the tonal differences in a mahogany and maple capped guitar. We did these recording using our Carr Mercury amplifier set flat at 2 watts using the neck pickup with the tone and volume knobs wide open. The difference is quite prominent... we will leave it up to you to decide which is best!

We notice a clarity and familiarity with the tone of the Maple Cap, offering a crisp and clear high end while the mahogany cap darkens the tone, smooths out the treble, and adds considerable warmth to the overall tone... in the end it all depends on your playing style and personal taste... these are both rock and roll demons ready to growl!

Collings MT2 V A Style Mandolin with Varnish Finish

Collings MT2 V A Style Mandolin with Varnish Finish

The MT2V is Collings' fully appointed A-model, built with an Adirondack Red Spruce top and premium figured Maple back and sides and finished with a hand-rubbed varnish.

The luthiers at Collings use an alkyd resin varnish on their varnish finished mandolins and guitars. It does not have the sheen or gloss of lacquer, but has a deeper looking luster like early oil varnishes from the 1800s or the early Loar instruments. The process takes a lot more time, both in application and drying, and is certainly not conducive to volume production. The difference in tone, however, more than make up for this. The varnish creates a faster response with deeper and warmer treble, and a greater overall dynamic range.

This mandolin has a tone that is rich in low mids and very smooth in the treble range. The Varnish finish makes the Collings MT2 that much warmer, making the tone sound much deeper with lots of warmth and definition. A custom nut width of 1 3/16" gives your left hand plenty of room to fret notes cleanly and accurately and is especially nice when transitioning from guitar to a mandolin.

This Collings MT2V also features custom Waverly Mandolin tuners with Pearl buttons, grained Ivoroid body, peghead and pickguard binding with b/w purfling, and a gorgeous Burst, which aside from being both functional and visual, actually balances the tone when recordings, similar to engaging a high-pass filter on the microphone. It reduces proximity effect, or the boominess that can arise when recording close miked. The pickguard will also do an exceptional job at protecting the beautiful varnish finish.

Collings is now offering their electric models with a new choice of humbuckers, produced by Throbak. The Legendary 50's Gibson humbucker was the first successful humbucking pickup and is commonly referred to among collectors as the Patent Applied For pickup or PAF. Using similar tooling and wiring the Throbak MXV series uses vintage accurate reproduction to create pickups that offer the same vintage tones we know and love with a modern twist.

A common misconception of the Patent Applied For pickups was that these pickups were wound by hand. In fact, one of the most important tonal ingredients for the legendary Gibson PAF pickups was the vintage winding machines. Only using a small number of machines to wind the coils, each machine added it's own tonal signature to the PAF Pickups. ThroBak takes all the tonal possibilities that the winding machines are capable of and combine them to produce the ThroBak.

The SLE-101 Plus Limited has the same winder configuration as the  SLE-101 Limited but with ThroBak custom cast unoriented A5 magnets and extra winds for more power and bite. The unoriented A5 has the crunch of A2 plus the added power of A5. Vintage spec. plain enamel magnet wire, Michigan hard maple wood spacer, vintage correct two conductor wire and threaded baseplate complete the picture. This provides a wonderful singing top end, a vibrant midrange, and a taut, precise low end. We plugged this one into a Carr Artemus and were completely floored with the tones that poured out of this guitar!

National ResoPhonic RM1 Vintage Mandolin Maple Steel

Hear This Instrument: National RM-1 Mandolin
Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
National ResoPhonic RM1 Vintage Mandolin Maple Steel

Inspired by a rare pre-war wood bodied National mandolin, National's resonator mandolin has traditional features like the biscuit bridge combined with modern touches such as an intonated saddle and a comfortably radiused, extended fingerboard. The art deco cast tailpiece is a National exclusive. The sides, back and top is figured maple as is the neck. The tuners are vintage-style open gear.

This mandolin has an instantly unique sound.  The resonator adds a level of volume previously impossible with traditional mandolins.  While the make/model is different, Sam Bush is often heard playing slide on a resonator mandolin and this RM-1V from National instantly conjures that bluesy mandolin sound.  Celtic and Irish melodies sound especially unique on this mandolin and we have customers who play them in bluegrass circles as well... dominating fiddles, banjos, and guitars like nothing you've ever heard!

This guitar features a Custom Brock Burst Top.  The Brock Burst finish is "inspired by" the "legendary" Brock Burst, a 1959 Les Paul Standard that was brought to light by collector Brian Brock, hence the name. Collings I 35 Amber Sunburst Flamed Maple and Mahogany with Lollar Humbuckers

Collings I 35 Amber Sunburst Flamed Maple and Mahogany with Lollar Humbuckers

Bill Collings has reinvigorated the industry with his take on classic design. The I-35 is Collings' reinterpretation of the semi-hollow body, two-pickup guitar.  The first I-35 in Tiger Eye Burst in our shop did not last long  and we are now privileged to offer a classy Tobacco Sunburst finish.

The first customer who tried the I-35 model in our shop was glued to it for nearly 3 hours. You can tell just by playing it acoustically that you have something special in your hands. Plugged into one of our Carr amplifiers, this guitar really screams! You can hear every note in every chord all the way up and down the neck and will hear overtones you never noticed before in tunes you've been playing for years. From soft and sweet to thick and dirty, this guitar is up to the task with a sound is clear, focused, and articulate and sustain that goes on for days.

While the rest of the industry at large uses pressed plywood for their backs, and bent sides, Collings carves the back and sides from one single slab of Mahogany. This preserves the "look" of a semi-hollow bodied guitar while providing noticeable sonic differences to the player's ears. The top is carved from a  mineral flamed piece of book matched maple. This not only looks more like the "original" late 50's and early 60's instruments, but more importantly, sounds like an older guitar.

Collings collaborated with Jason Lollar for all their pickup designs. While the particular pickups they use are specially wound to Collings specifications, they are very near in design to the Lollar standard Imperial Humbucking models. Lollar manages to capture the airy top end, tight lows, balanced midrange, and complex overtones of the best original PAF pickups.

In reviews, they are consistently given high marks for their balanced frequency response. Unbalanced coils keep the bottom end tight for the intense richness the pickups provide, as overtones build after each note is played. Alnico 5 magnets are de-gaussed to specific levels, unique to the neck and bridge positions.

The sound Collings has developed with these pickups can certainly be described as mature. The neck position pushes out a lovely warmth and depth - ideal for jazz chording or chunky blues. None of the pesky midrange honkiness that can be found with other bridge humbuckers is present. The bridge pickup is certainly hotter and more aggressive, but maintains full-bodied presence without any harshness.
