SOLD: Pre-Owned: 1992 Goodall RSC Rosewood Standard Cutaway Engelmann Spruce

Hear This Instrument: Goodall RSC
Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
1992 Goodall RSC Rosewood Standard Cutaway Engelmann Spruce

James Goodall is an artisan of superb craftsmanship with an exacting finesse for detail and wood choice, combined with robust, three dimensional sound character. These qualities embody every James Goodall guitar.

The Standard series, this one having rosewood back and sides, with its graceful curving lines, is a larger-bodied guitar with a clarity that is uncanny!  The amazingly rich, powerful bass and midrange is blended with a brilliant treble shimmering with harmonic overtones. Arguably the most balanced guitar he makes, James feels that the Goodall Standard is the crowning achievement of his luthierie career. Approximately the same cavity size as the dreadnought guitar, that is where the resemblance stops. More than one musician has commented that "this guitar makes others sound like they are stuffed full of cotton."

Whether in your living room, in the studio, or on stage, this one excels. Truly it can be said that this is the Standard by which all other guitars are judged.

The top of this guitar is Engelmann Spruce, which is the softest of the spruce topwoods.  This allows for lots of projection and responsiveness when played with a lighter touch or even bare fingers.  Not to be fooled, however, this guitar will take some flatpicking and strumming as well, as long as you don't push it too hard.  The tone is warm, rich, and effortless.

This guitar has some dings and scratches, as the detailed photos will indicate.  These are on the headstock, top, and back of the instrument.  Fret wear is almost non-existent, though this guitar has been played often.  Original hardshell case included, as well as a Small Dog case cover.

SOLD: Collings D2HG German Spruce and Indian Rosewood Adirondack Bracing No Tongue Brace

Hear This Instrument: Collings D2HG
Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
Collings D2HG German Spruce and Indian Rosewood Adirondack Bracing No Tongue Brace

The square-shouldered 14-fret dreadnought is the most popular steel-string acoustic guitar body shape in the world. While Collings is certainly not the first to build them, they bring a new tonal clarity to the depth and warmth usually associated with such a large, deep-bodied guitar. Although its bass response makes the dreadnought ideal for vocal accompaniment, Collings versions are also often employed by bluegrass flatpickers who must compete with inherently louder instruments such as banjos and fiddles. The wide range of woods and neck sizes offered allow dreadnought fans to find a Collings model ideally suited to their playing style and tonal preference.

This D2HG is an instant shop favorite, featuring a German Spruce top, Adirondack Spruce bracing, and no tongue brace.  We love German Spruce here at Artisan because it not only offers a rich and complex tone, but is versatile for many different playing styles.  German Spruce offers exceptional stiffness together with low weight making the tops more responsive.   We often find German to be a perfect compromise between Sitka and Adirondack, since it responds so well to fingerstyle playing and also holds up to a heavy pick attack.

Accompaniments like the Adirondack bracing and the removal of the tongue brace make this guitar that much more menacing.  Adirondack Bracing offers a more efficient transfer of string energy to the top, since Adirondack is much stiffer than the standard Sitka braces.   This allows for a more responsive and powerful sound board.

We are also a big fan of leaving the tongue brace out of these instruments.  As people search for the mythical tone of old guitars, this brace comes into scrutiny. Martin added the tongue brace in 1940 and it has become standard every since. The absence of a tongue brace frees the top to allow enhanced vibration and results in a richer, fuller, tone with more low end resonance.  It is speculated that Martin added the brace to prevent top cracking, but the years have proven this to have been unnecessary and actually decreases resonation.

SOLD: Bourgeois Custom “Very Vintage” Adirondack Spruce & Brazilian Rosewood Dreadnought Varnish Finish, custom Pale Sunburst with Hot Hide Glue Assembly

Hear This Instrument: Bourgeois Very Vintage Brazilian
Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
Bourgeois Custom

This Very Vintage Brazilian Rosewood Dreadnought from Dana Bourgeois is loaded with tone enhancing features that combine to make a stellar instrument with a tone that only these features can offer.  Dana's guitars are already some of the finest made, so when you add some of these special upgrades you are truly in for something very special.

The finish is an oil varnish, which really takes the tone to another level.  According to Dana, "The closest thing to the sound of a 70 year old nitrocellulose lacquer finish isn't a new lacquer finish, but a thin oil varnish finish. Properly applied, oil varnish smooths out the "jangly" sound of a new guitar in much the same way that lots of playing seems to accomplish."  This makes the guitar sound more "broken in" from the start, not to mention the deep hue the varnish imparts on the finish is simply gorgeous.

Additional features include a 1 3/4" nut width, a Mammoth ivory nut, ebony bridge and pins, and hot hide glue construction.

The backwood on this guitar is Brazilian Rosewood.  Brazilian Rosewood is an extremely rare tonewood with deep bass and brilliant trebles that was used on the famous vintage guitars we have all grown to love.  An international embargo on trade on Brazilian rosewood products guarantees that the relatively few sets remaining in this country will continue to spiral in price as the supply dwindles.  In the hands of Dana, especially with these specifications, you can guarantee the guitar will be a monster... and this one certainly is!

This guitar was also built with Adirondack top bracing, as are all of Dana's guitars.  The Adirondack bracing was painstakingly made by hand in the old fashioned method with hot hide glue.  Hide Glue sets up very hard, like glass, allowing more energy transfer through the bracing. Hot Hide Glue adds responsiveness across the spectrum.  This type of glue was used on the early guitars we have all fallen in love with, but later phased out due to the time required to use it, not to mention the mess it makes.  The sonic benefits can't be ignored, adding not only responsiveness, but a new level of detail and clarity.  The Adirondack Bracing helps to stiffen the top, making it that much more powerful with more headroom and overall volume.

This guitar posesses everything we love about Dana's guitars, but also adds another dimension to the sound.  The highs are a bit mellower and the bass is more prominent.  The guitar is incredibly responsive and sounds great played softly as well.  The clarity and definition we find on all of Dana's guitars is right there... even on the lowest strings.  Add the vintage like "thump" of this guitar and you have something nearly impossible to put down.

Finished off with Dana's "in-between sunburst," this guitar looks as good as it sounds.  The Koa bindings are exquisite against the sunburst Adirondack top and the Brazilian Rosewood back and sides.  Dana's classy wood purfling is a finishing touch that really completes the look... this guitar has it all!  This guitar is already sold, but keep your eye on our arriving soon list, we have 2 more on order with similar specs!

SOLD: Santa Cruz 1929-000 All-Mahogany Custom Full Body Sunburst Finish

Hear This Instrument: Santa Cruz 1929-000 Custom Full Body Sunburst
Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
Santa Cruz 1929-000 All-Mahogany Custom Full Body Sunburst Finish

The 1929 000 is the full sized version of the 1929 Model we originally commissioned. A longer, 25.375 inch scale for additional volume and bass make it a worthy ensemble instrument. You will find the same simple and elegant aesthetics of the 1929-O and 1929-OO versions. The master grade True Mahogany top is correctly dimensioned and hand voiced for a full and complex presence, and the elements for an heirloom guitar are all in place. The 1929-000’s look includes a period correct “Vintage Script” logo done tastefully in Ivoroid. Classic Ebony complements the pyramid bridge, tuner buttons, head-plate and fretboard. An appropriately simple rosette is inlaid with a rich faux tortoise shell celluloid ring in a vintage Ivoroid border. The 1929-000 Model has all the exceptional presence and playability that you would expect from the Santa Cruz stable of state of the art acoustic guitars.

This guitar excels at fingerstyle playing while also providing great projection and depth when strummed and flatpicked.  The all-mahogany construction provides a clear, woody, dry and airy tone that is very balanced and smooth thanks to the masterful voicing.  The comfortable 000 size doesn’t lack for low end… as stated above, the tone is quite balanced thanks to Richard Hoover’s masterful tap tuning and skillful bracing, providing a sound that is much larger than many other similar sized instruments.

The finishing touch on this particular 1929 guitar is the custom sunburst over the highly impressive set of Mahogany.  This finish and wood combination instantly set the guitar apart visually from our other 1929 models.

ON HOLD: Collings OM2H Cut Sitka Spruce and Indian Rosewood with Cutaway

Hear This Instrument: Collings OM2H Cut Sitka Spruce and Indian Rosewood with Cutaway
Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
Collings OM2H Cut Sitka Spruce and Indian Rosewood with Cutaway

‘OM’ stands for “Orchestra Model,” but 80 years after this body shape was first designed it has become the most popular 14-fret model with fingerstyle guitar soloists who choose to play on steel strings… yet with custom German Spruce top, flatpickers also find it very appealing with virtually unlimited headroom and power when you need it.

The compact shape makes the Collings OM2H equally easy to handle onstage or when sitting on the couch. The tone is focused and powerful, as are all Collings' guitars.

The topwood on this guitar is Sitka Spruce, paired with rosewood back and sides.  This is a classic combination that is highly versatile for many playing styles.  Sitka can be played fingerstyle or with a flatpick and can excel at both.  It is ideal for flatpickers who don't require the stiffness of Adirondack, offering more volume and responsiveness from a lighter touch.  When combined with rosewood on the back and sides, Sitka is very lush and has a warm, rich low end.  The highs are also crystal clear on a Collings, since only the highest grade Sitka Spruce is chosen for their instruments.  This guitar also features a cutaway, ensuring easy access to the upper frets.  You really can't go wrong with this model!

SOLD: Collings D1AV Adirondack and Mahogany with Vintage Now Neck

Hear This Instrument: D1A Vintage Now Neck
Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
Collings D1AV Adirondack and Mahogany with Vintage Now Neck

Collings brings new clarity to the depth and warmth associated with large, deep-bodied dreadnought guitars. The bass response makes the dreadnought ideal for vocal accompaniment, however, Collings D1 Series Mahogany dreads are employed by some of the busiest bluegrass flatpickers in the business, such as Andy Falco of the Stringdusters and Adam Aijala of Yonder Mountain String Band.

This Collings D1AV is extraordinarily loud. The Adirondack Spruce top loves to be played loud and provides ample headroom and power needed to cut through bluegrass ensembles. The Mahogany back and sides keep your lead lines clear and distinct, just like the classic flatpicking recordings we've grown to love from players like Clarence White, Doc Watson, and Norman Blake.

Loudness aside, this guitar is also incredibly balanced in it's frequency response. Notes are rich and full all the way up and down the neck. The midrange and high-end sparkle will cut through any studio or on-stage mix with ease. The lows are balanced, defined, well rounded, and never boomy.

The Vintage Now neck is a custom appointment on this instrument and is coupled with a 1 3/4" nut and 2 1/4" string spacing at the saddle. Collings Vintage Now neck is the perfect compromise for many players that think a modern neck is too flat in profile, yet the typical neck on a 40's style instrument is too thick. Collings' exclusive neck profile is uniquely adapted to players looking for vintage width and girth, with contemporary playability. The slightly wider string spacing at both ends of the guitar also makes fingerstyle playing and chordal accompaniment more enjoyable.

SOLD: Huss and Dalton DM with Sitka Top and Mahogany Back and Sides

Hear This Instrument: Huss & Dalton DM Sitka
Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
Huss and Dalton DM with Sitka Top and Mahogany Back and Sides

The Huss and Dalton DM is a classic dreadnought design with a boost to the midrange for a more balanced tonal quality. It pairs Mahogany back and sides with a Sitka Spruce top for a sound that is very crisp and defined with lots of definition. The Sitka Spruce is perfect for players with a lighter pick attack who also play fingerstyle.

Something about the Huss and Dalton line makes the guitars smell especially aromatic. While playing this guitar the smell of the wood travels up to the players nose and if you are not careful, this can be very addictive and is known to cause sore fingers. Nothing smells better than a Huss and Dalton!

If the smell isn't enough, this DM more importantly sounds fantastic! It is a joy to play and is very balanced across the entire fretboard. Lead players will love the big midrange that this guitar exhibits making every note very clear and defined, cutting through even the most demanding rhythm sections. The sound is very round and the low end is very smooth and never boomy, balancing the tone quite nicely.

Huss and Dalton also utilizes Adirondack Spruce bracing standard on all of their guitars, which is an incredible feature, especially at this price point. Adirondack braces are thinner and lighter making the guitar much more resonant and open.

SOLD: National NRP Collegian with Bullethole Coverplate Galaxy Blue

Hear This Instrument: National NRP Collegian Steel Body
Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
National NRP Collegian with Bullethole Coverplate Galaxy Blue

There is an art to reproducing guitars from a by-gone era in today's day and age. The folks at National have certainly proven that they can not only faithfully recreate models, but update them tastefully and even improve upon them. Last year we after months of research between San Luis Obispo and Nashville, National Resophonic and Artisan Guitars were pleased to re-introduce the National "Collegian" to the world!

The Collegian is a steel-body, 14 fret instrument.  It was originally introduced in the late 30's as a student model, with a value price to match. It was essentially a Duolian with a simpler coverplate. Instead of a "sieve" coverplate featured on the guitars of the time, the Collegian had two concentric rings of holes with 18 holes in each ring. These "bullet-hole" cover plates made these resonators stand out from the crowd, also lending a unique sound to the instrument.

Yes, it cuts like steel can only cut, but the Collegian has a roundness to it that echoes brass in it's warmth. Chords are rich and complex with slight overtones, for a pronounced note quality that allows it to shine when played with one of our Diamond Slides. It sustains, and has a beautiful roundness to each tone.  From National's 1941 Collegian ad: " Their tone quality and volume surpass that of any non-electric in this price field. They possess amazing sustaining power, with bell clear harmonics and smooth, vibrant volume: yet they really have commanding 'punch' for the professional."  This year our friends at National are making Artisan The Collegian in a new "Galaxy Blue" finish.  This guitar has become a favorite of the whole store!  Listen to the MP3 and see why we love it.

National Triolian Steel Body Walnut Burst 12-Fret

Hear This Instrument: National Triolian Steel Body Walnut Burst
Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
National Triolian Steel Body Walnut Burst 12-Fret

Introduced in 2009, the National Triolian 12-Fret captures the look and feel of the late 1930’s W-Series Triolians.  The name refers to the original cone design of the first 12 prototype models, which had a single cone top covering up a tri-cone setup inside. They kept the name, even after switching to a single-cone design for the production models.

The thin-gauge steel body is highlighted by flat cut “f” holes, a formed back, and traditional sieve-hole coverplate.  Each body is hand painted in walnut-burst to capture the look of the originals.  The maple neck clears 12 frets to the body and features an ivoroid-bound rosewood fretboard complete with inlaid mother-of-pearl position markers.  Tuners are vintage-style engraved, open gear.

This Triolian sounds incredible… it is loud, punchy, and brash without being harsh on the ears. The signature sound of the early models of the 30’s were made famous by Delta Blues players such as Blind Boy Fuller and these current models will blow the originals out of the water. If you are a Delta Blues piedmont style player, look no further… this is your instrument!

SOLD: Pre-Owned: 2011 Santa Cruz D/PW Custom Old Growth Sitka Spruce and Mahogany Custom “Tony Rice” Style Voicing with Enlarged Soundhole and Herringbone

Hear This Instrument: Santa Cruz D/PW Custom
Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
2011 Santa Cruz D/PW Custom Old Growth Sitka Spruce and Mahogany Custom

Though it began life as a Santa Cruz D/PW-M, this custom instrument was customized almost beyond recognition, making it a truly unique and special Santa Cruz.  The topwood is constructed using a set of old growth Sitka Spruce, carefully selected by Richard Hoover himself.   The secret to the desirable tone of vintage instruments lies in aged wood (crystallized resins) and the relaxation of tensions built in during manufacturing. It's not just the species of wood - but the era in which it grew and was cut, and the method in which you build it.

This guitar was built with Adirondack top bracing and hot hide glue construction.  Adirondack bracing makes the top stiffer, providing additional volume and headroom.

The voicing of this special D/PW is reminiscent of the Tony Rice model with its spectacular balance and note definition. An enlarged soundhole balances out woofy bass frequencies and also has the desirable side effect of allowing  a microphone to be placed closer to the soundhole without introducing proximity effect.  The bracing is moved back significantly compared to a standard D/PW, which is what instantly reminds us of the balanced tone of the Tony Rice model.  The scale also matches the TR Pro model, measuring in at 25 1/4".  In true TR fashion, the headstock has no inlay and the logo was moved to the 12th fret.

For the ultimate in modern playability, the neck has a custom profile, resulting in a sleek modified V.  With a 1 11/16" nut width, lightning fast runs can be played with ease!

This guitar has one ding on the edge of the headstock, as seen in the detail photograph. The original owners name is on the label, though we blurred it out to maintain privacy online.  Original Ameritage hardshell case included.
