The Martin Guitar Company has been continuously producing some of the finest acoustic instruments in the world since the 1830’s. Now six generations deep, Martin has been a family owned and operated company since their inception. Some of the most sought-after guitars in Martin’s history are the ones produced during and prior to WWII and are commonly referred to as Pre-War Martins. There is some debate on what constitutes a “Pre-War” model, but most would agree that a 1941 falls comfortably within the Pre-War heritage. Many changes were happening to the guitar’s designs at the time due to war related supply shortages and technology advancements, but Martin never veered away from its commitment to quality.

We are proud to present this Vintage Pre-War, 1941 Martin D-18. The D-18 is an American guitar Icon. The Style 18 Martin guitar has a Spruce top and Mahogany body which has been the mainstream of the Martin guitar line since the mid-1800s. When C.F. Martin first produced this model in 1932 for “Arkie the Arkansas Woodchopper,” little did he know the impact he was making on the musical world, as well as the world in general. Numerous stars have used the Style 18 as their main guitar (for example Elvis Presley used a WW2-time Martin D-18 guitar as his main instrument during much of the 1950s).

The wonderful story behind this vintage Martin:

It was purchased by a WWII fighter pilot prior to his entry into the war. We even have a copy of the original owner’s card from when he purchased the guitar.  The guitar remained in the family’s hands for quite some time but has changed hands a few times in recent years. This guitar is truly a piece of history with a cool story to go with it!

This 1941 Martin D-18 features an Adirondack spruce top, scalloped bracing, Honduran Mahogany back and sides, 14-fret solid Honduran Mahogany neck, 20-fret Ebony fingerboard with Mother of Pearl dot inlays, 1-11/16" nut width, 25.4" scale, tortoise pick guard, w/b/w/b (wood) top purfling, Rosewood peghead overlay, tortoise celluloid body binding and nickel Grover open-gear tuners with butter-bean buttons.

The guitar sounds and plays quite amazing.  Given its age it’s in great condition and has been well cared for over the years. Cosmetically everything is in great shape. The neck has been professionally reset, new frets, and bridge properly glued. The initial “S” has been very lightly scratched into the heel cap, there is slight buckle rash on the back of the body.

There are a few dings on the top, back, sides and neck. The bridge pins appear to be replacements although they are the correct original style, made of black plastic. The guitar comes with the original hardshell case, a vintage capo that appears to be from the same era as the guitar, as well as an Ameritage hardshell case with built in humidifier.

This Martin D-18 has some expected light cosmetic issues, little-to-no play wear for an instrument from this era. The guitar truly is in fantastic condition! It delivers every bit of the tone and playability you would expect from a great Pre-War Martin. Excellent guitar to add to any vintage collection.
