As the head of the Maton Custom Shop, Andy Allen has the ability to build a guitar that will produce the sound that the customer has ordered and wants to hear. The construction of a Custom Shop guitar is performed by a single, skilled luthier and this ensures every detail mirrors precisely the customer’s requirements.
It also ensures the look as well as the sound matches the buyer’s dream. Each operation is done by hand, the way Maton Guitars have been built since 1946, with no deadline. The process will take however long is required to meet the customer’s expectations. A masterpiece cannot be rushed!
Designed as a tribute to the Maton founder, Bill May and to bring the best of Maton's heritage and their guitar making skills together, the W.A. May is a guitar for the connoisseur.
Satin Box (in our opinion the best tone wood available) back and sides combine with a Blackwood neck and AAA spruce face to produce a huge sounding dreadnought guitar. Add to that the unique Custom Shop voicing and craftsmanship and you have a guitar worthy of the name W.A. May.
Satin Box is a small tree which is often found as a companion plant to Victorian Blackwood. It is a striking blonde color and has amazing tonal properties. Satin Box is extremely stiff and produces a sound comparable to Brazilian. It is rare to find a Satin Box tree large enough to yield a guitar back and side set so we reserve the use of this beautiful tonewood for very special guitars.
This W.A. May Custom Shop 808 is equipped with the AP5 Pro Pickup system.
The AP5 Pro features Separate Microphone and Piezo input controls allow for blending of both microphone and piezo levels prior to sending the actively combined signals through to the tone circuits and master volume.
Highly selective cardioid microphone system allows for much greater microphone level before feedback in live environments. This newly upgraded microphone is direct mounted to the preamp casing via an adjustable arm, which permits easy final tweaking of microphone position to suit the individual artists style.
