Your grandparents may have stories about their many personal tribulations of the Great Depression. Much of that was borne out in the music during that era and the years that followed. Cowboy lullabies, ballads of dustbowl refugees, and early travelers along Route 66 across this great country.
Songs of hardship, but uplifting messages of hope that kept Americans forging ahead. From the depths of minorities and rural audiences in the 1920’s sprang the Blues, diversified in style which later gave birth to ‘rhythm and blues’, merging Blues with Christian spirituals, gospel, and Appalachian folk music.
To mention just two of the musical pioneers of this era, Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger wrote about the times, hitchhiking and hopping freight trains. After the depression there was an uplifting spirit that beckoned thoughts of prosperity, and music was a vibrant part of that movement.
The guitar was essential to roots music in the 1930’s, with brands like Kel Kroydon, Recording King, Harmony, and Stella in vogue. Catalog companies Montgomery Ward and Sears & Roebuck were pioneers in commissioning guitars to be built across the nation. A chicken in every pot, a guitar in every household.. Cost? Just $5 at the time!
