Ko'olau

Ko'olau ukes are hand built in our facility in Wahiawa, on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. For many years Ko’olau Guitar and Ukulele has been building some of the finest quality ukes money can buy, allowing the customer to pick from many woods and decorative options. The company was founded and is still run by John Kitakis, whose career began as a furniture maker. He moved from the mainland US to Hawaii forty  years ago, then for a period of time went back to the mainland  doing warranty repair work  for Martin,Taylor, Gibson, Guild and other guitar manufacturers, and in between  built custom  guitars and mandolins.

Eventually he, his wife and children returned to Oahu  to begin Ko’olau Guitar & Ukulele Company.  All of John’s children worked in the family business, from sorting screws to sweeping floors. His oldest son, Noa eventually chose to pursue stringed instrument making, and now manages all Ko’olau production.  His youngest son, Andrew also joined the family doing repairs and  assisting in Ko’olau construction and finishing, but eventually established his own retail guitar and ‘ukulele business.

Composed using only the finest material, this custom tenor ukulele was created using traditional and time-honored methods of construction. Ko'olau ukuleles are abhorrent of mass production and created using hand-tools in the old world fashion; they are truly musical works of art. Each custom design is the product of a liberal amount of artistic licensing or built to spec. Each piece is delivered with pride only after being tested, signed and dated.

All necks, for all models are made of quartersawn Mahogany. Mahogany has been accepted in stringed instrument manufacturing as the most stable and lightweight wood, the least likely to warp or twist due to variations in weather and humidity. Although pretty to look at, Koa is not as stable for necks.

This beautiful work of art features Koa top, back and sides, Ebony front and back binding, Peghead Tuners, custom Abalone rosette and fretboard markers. A gorgeous oil finish completes this gorgeous custom ukulele.

This instrument is in Excellent + Condition with no wear to mention.
