National NRP Tricone Baritone Black Polychrome Finish Pre-Owned 2007
National is known for building a variety of instruments, ranging in price and decoration from simple wood bodied guitars, to fully engraved brass beauties.
Nationals have been played by many blues legends, but they definitely were not playing one with a finish like this. No two of the Black Polychrome finishes are alike.
The Tricone design was originated in the 1920's and was based on the same principle as the mica disc on a Victrola. The designers settle on a very thin, conical shaped aluminum resonator design, used in a set of three connected with a T-bar inside an all metal body.
Three were used due to the mellowed sound and increased sustain it produced, as opposed to using one large cone which was louder, but brighter in tone.
The bellowing and rich tone the Baritone exhibits is sure to inspire even the most blocked and burnt out players. The neck has slightly larger profile (1.88") than the standard model and uses a heavier gauge set of strings, but still plays, feels, and responds like a National should.
This instrument has been customized with a Black Polychrome finish with Ivoroid Fretboard binding.
