1953 Vintage Gibson ES 140 Electric Archtop

This vintage Gibson ES-140 looks fabulous. It plays beautifully and has an amazingly big smooth tone for such a small instrument. It plays easily and every note is true and clear. The P-90 pickup with "dog ears" in neck position works great. The P-90 absolutely screams, just like a vintage Gibson P-90 should! It has the capability of sounding jazzy or bluesy. All in a T-Bone Walker sort of way.

Introduced in 1950, the Gibson ES-140 was unique in the marketplace. It has a full-depth, cutaway archtop guitar in a compact 3/4 body size. A scaled-down version of the ever-popular ES-175, was the ES-140. This one offered big guitar performance for the player seeking a more petite body size, or just travelling light.

This original full depth version was built only until 1957. Afterwards the model continued as a thinline only. Lightweight and remarkably resonant, the 140 sits handily under the arm, and the fast scale length makes stretch chords and fast runs a breeze. The legendary P-90 pickup provides a clear, open tone unduplicated before or since.

This example has been maintained in wonderful condition. The neck is slim and gently rounded in a C profile. It plays effortlessly, with smooth low action over fine original frets. Tipping the scales at an astonishing 3lb. 8oz., the ES-140 is truly the ultimate vintage travel guitar.

The tuners are the original plastic ones and still work. It features a 12 3/4" wide full depth body, 22 3/4" short scale, pointed cutaway, one P-90 pickup with “dog ears” in neck position, single bound top and back, dot fingerboard inlays, silkscreen logo, sunburst finish.

This guitar has obvious wear as expected from a 1950's vintage instrument. However, none of the wear extends through the finish. The detailed photos below capture most of the hazing and cracking which has occurred on the finish. It has moderate fretwear. Original chipboard case included.
