1978 Santa Cruz FTC-1 Prototype Cutaway Arched Back Maple and Spruce
The Santa Cruz FTC, flat top cutaway, was introduced in 1978. It featured a flat top and a carved, arched back. This particular guitar is a prototype from that year and features a spruce top, maple back and sides, a cutaway, asymmetrical headstock. It also has deco inlays on the fingerboard. The inspiration for this model comes from the Gibson j-185 small-jumbo guitars.
The model was designed to provide the clarity and punch of an archtop, with the warmth and sustain of a flattop. Richard has stated in interviews that this was one of their best designs. It worked very well for jazz and fingerstyle playing but also for blues and other roots music as well.
The design was difficult to make, as well as market, so the model was eventually changed to a flat back model with less inlays, called the "F." The FTC would remain on the cover of the SCGC catalog for years, eventually catching the attention of Eric Clapton who placed an order for an FTC after seeing it in a guitar magazine.
This guitar shows wear consistent with the early build date. There is some light finish checking, documented in the photos. There are numerous dings and scratches that are captured in the detail photographs. The tuners show oxidation. There is grain filler in the back of the neck. Original case is included, and also shows wear. Check out the specs on this pre owned Santa Cruz. It could be just what you've been missing.
