1988 Martin J 65M Solid Spruce and Highly Figured Maple

Martin guitars have been prized for their tone, consistency, quality, and attention to handcrafted detail. Professional and amateur musicians in every category of music hold Martin guitars in high esteem. Among the extensive list of famous musicians who have owned and played Martin guitars are Elvis Presley, Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Eric Clapton, Joan Baez, Sting, Johnny Cash, Gene Autry, Hank Williams, Jimmy Buffett, Jimmy Page, Tom Petty, Willie Nelson, and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. More than 150 artist signature-model collaborations with many of the era’s greatest guitarists have raised more than a million dollars for the charities of each artist’s choosing.

Martin made a number of flattop guitars with maple back and sides over the years, but never offered them in regular production. In 1984, the company developed a line of maple guitars that was introduced at the NAMM trade show in early 1985.

Included were four M and J size models plus a Dreadnought D62LE that was part of the Guitars of the Month program for that year. Standard 60 series models introduced included the J-65m. Unlike other Martin styles, in the 60 Series each number was usually made in only one body shape.

Traditional Martin quality is reflected in these fine highly figured maple bodied guitars. Solid Spruce tops are a perfect complement. Added features are gold tuning machines with distinctive pearl style buttons, tortoise pickguard and heal cap. Additionally this Martin J-65M features tortoise body binding, mother of pearl fingerboard inlays and a zipper pattern back strip.

This 1988 Martin J 65M Solid Spruce and Highly Figured Maple guitar is in excellent condition with only surface scratches and a few small dents on the top, back, sides, neck and pickguard as can be seen in the detailed photos below. The low profile neck has been reset and a fret job completed by noted Martin guitar repair guru Richard Starkey. It has no fretwear and includes the original hardshell case.
