1995 Bourgeois 20th Anniversary Slope D Bearclaw Sitka Spruce and Brazilian Rosewood ID-7870
1995 Pre Owned Bourgeois 20th Anniversary Slope D Bearclaw Sitka Spruce and Brazilian Rosewood
To commemorate his 20th anniversary as a master luthier, Dana Bourgeois wanted to celebrate...and in a big way! He built a limited edition run of twenty slope dreadnaught instruments in true "luthier's choice" fashion, using a variety of tonewoods, but with exceptional appointments. Saving the best for last, he built the final four of Brazilian Rosewood and highly bear-clawed Sitka spruce. This instrument is number 19 of the 20 and is absolutely gorgeous.
This Pre Owned Bourgeois is in excellent condition with only a few very minor dents and scratches which we have attempted to capture in the detailed photos below. There is very minor fretwear and it includes the Original Hardshell Case.
The Bear Claw Sitka top, which is a bit stiffer than a standard sitka top, offers superb balance and great tonal response. Brazilian Rosewood is an extremely rare tonewood with deep bass and brilliant trebles that was used on the famous vintage guitars we have all grown to love. An international trade embargo on Brazilian rosewood products guarantees that the relatively few sets remaining in this country will continue to spiral in price as the supply dwindles. Brazilian brings remarkable darkness, depth, and warmth, while exhibiting glorious overtones across the entire tonal spectrum.
As Brazilian Rosewood is in short supply and no one really knows how much will be available in the years to come, this is an instrument that is sure to climb in rarity and value.
The slope shouldered dreadnought is only about 1/4" wider than a standard dreadnought, but what a difference! Voiced for a more open, though less driving, sound than the Country Boy, the Slope D happily accommodates a wide variety of playing styles including country, blues, old timey, pop, contemporary, and--you name it. And if you're a fingerstyle player looking for a dreadnought-sized guitar that can handle fingerpicks or bare fingers as well as flatpicks, the Slope D is definitely your guitar!
This guitar could be considered a "banjo killer" on steroids. The BRW and Bear Claw Sitka Spruce combined with genuine mother of pearl & abalone inlays on the ebony finger board, a unique pyramid-belly bridge with hand-carved fossilized mammoth ivory and abalone bridge pins with a bone saddle, give this guitar powerful clarity, sustain, and shimmering overtones. Dana Bourgeois made a real statement with this guitar--a visual and sonic stunner!
This guitar was a true inspiration and after the initial twenty were sold, Ricky Skaggs asked Dana to build a special guitar just for him. Ricky nicknamed his the "Tuxedo Guitar," suitable for awards show presentation, with its abalone purfling and rosette, triple ivoroid bound, body, neck, and "snakehead" headstock (which have aged like ivory), fingerboard and headstock MOP inlays in an abalone fleur-de-lis motif--topped off with an abalone 1 23/32" nut and gold Waverly tuners. Even the end pin is made of fossilized mammoth ivory.
