1997 Gibson J 200 Ron Wood Signature Sitka Spruce and Maple 91 of 100 ID-7853
1997 Gibson J 200 Ron Wood Signature
Ron Wood loves to play his Gibson 1950s SJ-200 with customized double pickguards. It has been his companion acoustic for many years and has come to be known as a Ron Wood trademark acoustic within the ranks of the Stones.
In 1997, Ron sent Gibson a hand drawing of a customized SJ-200 that would forever be called his own. From this drawing, master luthier Ren Ferguson created the Ron Wood Signature J-200 which would be a limited edition made by the Gibson Montana Custom Shop. To best describe this “Ron Wood Work of Art” is to visualize a Gibson J-200 set aflame. Each inlay pattern is a complex composition of Abalone and Mother of Pearl flames, and Ron’s trademark double pickguards are each hand engraved by Mr. Ferguson.
This special guitar was only available for a limited time. Only two custom runs for this signature acoustic were made available; one in Antique Natural finish and the second in a colorful TripleBurst finish. Each run was numbered and limited to 100 pieces and Ron Wood personally signed each label.
This instrument is number 91 of 100 Antique Natural finish models. It features a Sitka Spruce top with Maple back and sides. The signature model has the same headstock size, name location and binding as Wood's original. He's added flame-pattern inlay on the fingerboard and flames on the double pickguards. The headstock features his caricature/signature.
It is equipped with the LR Baggs Element Pickup System. Unlike typical undersaddle acoustic guitar pickups that are dependent on string compression for their sound, the Element was engineered to mirror the soundboard’s actual movement as you play. At the heart of the pickup, a flexible film sensor only 2 thousands of an inch thick picks up the guitar’s most delicate nuances. Tracking the motion of the top rather than a direct string attack suppresses “quack” caused by compression and unlocks the Element’s unrivaled dynamic range.
This 1997 Gibson J 200 Ron Wood Signature Sitka Spruce and Maple is in excellent condition with a few small dents and scratches which we have attempted to photograph below. Additionally, it has what appears to be a factory repair on the side and some slight finish checking on the peghead and neck. It has very minor fretwear and includes the original hardshell case.
