1997 Martin 000 28EC Eric Clapton Signature Model ID-8089
1997 Martin OOO 28EC Eric Clapton Signature Model #1236
As advertising manager for Martin; Dick Boak had Chris Martin's permission to contact Eric Clapton as Boak had been receiving so many calls regarding just what Clapton was playing on his incredibly popular Unplugged record. Eric Clapton has relied on Martin OOOs throughout acoustic career, resulting in huge increases in sales and interest from the 90s and onward. In 1995, Martin collaborated with Clapton and released the first of many signature models - the 000-42EC. Wildly popular and rather expensive, the impact of the 000-42EC resulted in a simpler and more affordable, yet equally as spectacular model. With Clapton's tremendous input, the 000-28EC was introduced to great acclaim early in 1996. The 000-28EC fits the bill, and this particular one has opened up beautifully!
Each 000-28EC bears an interior label, individually numbered in sequence. This instrument is number 1236 out of the thousands that have been produced. We are pleased to offer this unique, immaculately cared for, low production numbered, and incredible sounding guitar. Clapton himself has called 000-28EC a "utilitarian in the very best sense of the word" - and we would agree wholeheartedly!
The 000-28EC shares some characteristics with famed pre-war 000s, including a scalloped X bracing pattern. The 14th fret neck joint extends the reach beyond the typical 12th fret joint on 000s, but is still frets effortlessly up and down the fingerboard due to its short scale. The profile of the neck is a slight modified V with a 1 3/4" nut width. The combination is a nice complement that fills out your left hand without too much heft. The 000-28EC is surprisingly warm and rich, lending itself nicely to fingerpicking, yet with enough headroom for strumming.
It has the smaller "000" body size that Clapton prefers and that is particularly popular among fingerstyle and blues guitarists who like a clear and balanced sound together with the string flexibility that the shorter 24.9" scale length allows. It's top is Sitka Spruce with a vintage toner finish: the 2-piece back and sides are Indian Rosewood with a gloss finish. The body is bound with grained ivoroid. A genuine ebony fingerboard features the pre-war Style 28 snowflake pattern in a blond pearl, and Eric Clapton's signature is inlaid in mother-of-pearl between the 19th and 20th frets.
A few years of playing has opened up the Sitka Spruce top; it is responsive and mellowed on the top end, not to mention an absolutely handsome patina in terms of the color of the top. Hands down one of the nicest Martin 000s we have played! The Indian Rosewood brings the guitar balance and warmth, and when coupled with Sitka Spruce brings the guitar strong fundamentals, quick response, warm round trebles, and with the Sitka top can be strummed or finger-picked with ease.
This 1997 Martin 000 28EC is in excellent condition with some minor pickguard and body scratches which do not penetrate the finish and slight finish delamination on the back and sides of the neck. Given the location of the delamination, it is our opinion that this instrument has been refretted. It has moderate fretwear and includes the original Hardshell Case.
