2002 Martin HD 28VS Sitka Spruce and Indian Rosewood

Under the leadership of C.F. Martin IV, Martin and Co. has always built each of their guitars with extreme quality and beauty. All Martin guitars have always used top notch woods that are expertly inspected and selected by the wood experts at Martin. Nothing else sounds like a Martin guitar, and many of the most famous small builders in the world use Martin's original designs as foundations for their instruments. Since its debut in 1931, the D-28 has remained the standard by which all large-bodied, steel-string guitars are measured. The tone of the Martin D-28 Acoustic Guitar is what separates it from all other guitars. It has a solid Sitka spruce top with glossy finish, special East Indian rosewood for the polished back and sides, and genuine ebony fingerboard and bridge. With its rich, resonant warmth and punchy volume, the D-28 is particularly well-suited to music styles requiring loud, powerful rhythm accompaniment.

With this reissue of the classic HD-28vs, Martin ensured every detail of this instrument was faithful to the original. It's even been finished in special toner for an aged look! With a slightly larger body and a slotted head, the HD-28VS is a modern re-creation of the classic herringbone Dreadnought. Made from solid East Indian rosewood with a solid Sitka spruce top, it also features a solid black ebony fingerboard, and herringbone inlays around the rosette.

This is a classic combination that is highly versatile for many playing styles. Sitka can be played fingerstyle or with a flatpick and can excel at both. It is ideal for flatpickers who don't require the stiffness of Adirondack, offering more volume and responsiveness from a lighter touch. When combined with rosewood on the back and sides, Sitka is very lush and has a warm, rich low end.

This instrument has had a professional Gruhn Appraisal which can be seen in the detailed photos below and specifies the following modifications. "The bridge has been reshaped and a new saddle has been installed, the bridge pins are replacements, the tortoise shell grain pickguard is a replacement, the nut is a replacement and has a shim under it, the front of the peghead has been refinished and the torch style 45 peghead inlay appears to have been added at a later date, the tuners are replacement engraved Waverley gears with wood buttons, and a strap button has been installed on the heel of the neck. In all other respects the guitar conforms to the typical specifications of the model for the period in which it was made."

The HD28VS sounds exactly like a fine guitar should sound. Flat Pick, Finger Pick, Finger strum and any other method gives you great balance, strong mellow base, clear mids and highs without twang.

This 2002 Martin HD28Vs is in very good condition with minor, surface only scratches the top, back and sides. We've done our best to capture these in the detailed photos below. It has very minor fretwear and includes the original Martin Hardshell Case.
