2002 Santa Cruz Tony Rice Professional with German Spruce and Brazilian Rosewood
Never intended to be a copy of Tony's iconic 1934 D-28, the Santa Cruz Tony Rice Professional model represents over 30 years of collaboration between the legendary flat picker and master Santa Cruz luthier, Richard Hoover. The Tony Rice model is voiced to showcase his stellar lead work with influences from Clarence White to John Coltrane and delivers exactly what the contemporary flat picker needs: substantial treble and mid-range for rapid lead lines, clean note separation for definition and the traditional bass boom without the woofy bottom end of some of the older Martins. According to Tony, most of his modern recordings are recorded using his Santa Cruz models.
Tony Rice stands amongst the greatest guitar players ever, regardless of musical genre. He spans the range of acoustic music from Bluegrass to jazz and even singer songwriter folk. To be sure, he is likely the single greatest innovator of flat picked acoustic music since the legendary Clarence White rewrote the book for us all. Tony has enjoyed a long and fruitful musical career alongside of master players such as JD Crowe, Norman Blake, and David “Dawg” Grisman. He has virtually re-written the rules for acoustic music with such classic albums as Manzanita, Devlin, Blake and Rice, and Tone Poems.
The Tony Rice Professional Model has been further refined to offer the same specifications as used on Mr. Rice’s personal guitar. Old growth Brazilian Rosewood of the quality seen in the best vintage instruments and German Spruce chosen from master stock from the Italian/Swiss border are the materials of choice.
The gorgeous, Highly Figured Brazilian rosewood offers deep, growling lows while the Master Grade German top provides a fast response with rich complex overtones.
German Spruce, being more flexible than Adirondack, is the perfect compromise for many players who love flat picking but also enjoy playing finger style. We all can't play like Tony, so German is a much better choice for many players, as it is more forgiving and doesn't require quite as much strength to pull the tone out of the guitar.
The Santa Cruz string balance comes from Richard Hoover's masterful top voicing. Richard tap tunes each top to ensure it is voiced specially for that specific body cavity and this one is no exception... the guitar is voiced beautifully for maximum power and clarity while maintaining the famous Santa Cruz string balance up the entire neck.... it's easy to see why Tony prefers recording with these modern masterpieces.
This guitar has been gorgeously appointed with Ivoroid Bindings on the body, neck and peghead. Gold Waverly tuners with Butter-Bean Buttons, Herringbone purfling, Style 45 Snow Flake fingerboard inlays, and finished off with Brazilian rosewood headstock overlay with MOP Tree of Life inlay.
This guitar has also been equipped with the LR Baggs Anthem pick up. At the heart of the Anthem is a revolutionary microphone engineered to capture a dynamic studio-mic’d sound for any live performance. The TRU•MIC mounts to the underside of the bridge plate and hovers just 3 mm above its surface to take advantage of the PZM or “boundary” effect. This proprietary mounting system, combined with noise cancellation, frees the mic to perform as if it were outside of the guitar in a studio and maintain remarkable feedback suppression for the stage. The result is a balanced frequency response with excellent clarity for the purest sound you have ever heard amplified. LR Baggs paired the Element pickup with the TRU•MIC to provide solidity and punch for low frequencies.
Additionally, To enhance the play ability, a shorter (25.25 inch) scale and Tony’s slim neck profile provide fast and effortless action. The heirloom tone woods and intelligent design make this instrument the quintessential contemporary bluegrass dreadnought. In Tony’s own words, “This is a guitar you can go to war with.”
This 2002 Santa Cruz Tony Rice Professional with German Spruce and Brazilian Rosewood is in excellent condition and recently had a complete set-up, including fret dressing and leveling at the Santa Cruz Guitar factory. Richard Hoover personally looked over the guitar and was impressed with the sound and condition of this instrument. There are a couple of very minor spots of finish checking on the top and a few small surface dents and scratches which we have attempted to capture in the detailed photos below. It has very minor fret wear and includes the original hard-shell case.
