2005 Gibson LP STD 58 R Tobacco Sunburst

This 2005 Gibson LPR8 Plain Top is in excellent condition. It has no fretwear and only one small, minor dent. The dent is locatied on the back of the neck, near the neck joint. Additionally, there are a few very light scratches on the side of the lower bout. These can be seen in the detailed photos below. Includes the original hardshell case and warranty card.

In July of 1958 Gibson introduced the newly renamed Les Paul Standard. They hoped to correct Gibson’s waning sales of solid body electric guitars. They had been on the decline ever since 1953 when the company shipped 2,245 instruments.

For the 1958 Standard Plaintop, Gibson decided to arrange the maple top in two “bookmatched” pieces. They are glued together at the center seam. This gave each guitar its very own distinct look. It marked the beginning of the guitar world’s fascination with figured maple tops.

The 1958 Les Paul Standard reissue produced today by Gibson Custom is true to all of the original instrument’s features and characteristics. This includes Gibson’s traditional carved “plain” maple top. It also includes a solid, non-weight relieved mahogany body. Gibson’s legendary Burstbucker pickups deliver all the subtle variations of true, classic humbucker tone. This is done by using historically “unmatched” bobbin windings and Alnico II magnets.

Other historical appointments include CTS potentiometers, bumble bee capacitors and rolled crème-colored fingerboard binding. Additonal features include single-ply crème binding around the body, and period-correct switchwasher and jackplate.

Why plain top? Well, some Les Pauls came with figured maple tops. However, the greatest proportion of those early sunburst Les Pauls by far had relatively plain maple tops. If you're looking for vintage vibe in a Les Paul that's as historically accurate as anything Gibson has built over the past few decades and don't want or need a figured top then look no further. The 1958 Les Paul Standard Plain Top is just what you're looking for.

It has the deep, elegant top carved with cream single-ply binding on the top. Another aspect of the sunburst finish is the way it has aged. Some '58s still have the cherry sunburst color. Others have faded to different degrees. This is in part because of variations in the stains used. These colors have been given names by collectors and they've stuck. These include Faded Tobacco and Iced Tea. The Faded Tobacco has a bit of blue in the red part of the "burst". Both of these finishes are very attractive. Gibson decided to use them in these reissues and the result is simply stunning!
