Larrivee OOO 60 Sitka Spruce and Rosewood
Jean Larrivee studied classical guitar but soon turned to building after meeting Edgar Monch (German Luthier) in his early twenties. Jean became Edgar’s apprentice and built a few classical guitars in his workshop before moving on to continue his passion from his home in Toronto, Canada. After some years in the workshop, Jean built his first steel string acoustic in 1971, catering for the thriving folk scene of Toronto. To most people Larrivee might be known for their unique cutaway and gorgeous inlay designs. The Florentine being the extreme cutaway first used, a sharp design that really made Larrivee stand out. The later development of the Venetian cutaway with its softer shape has since then become a more popular choice and is today offered on many models. The Larrivee inlays that you might have seen on head stocks are mostly done by Jean’s wife Wendy Larrivee. Ironically, the first Larrivee guitars didn’t have any inlays at all, not even any dots! So it seems Wendy not only completed Jeans private life but also his guitars. Jean Larrivee is a proud builder who doesn’t compromise on his builds. The Larrivee OOO-60 is an ideal 12 Fret fingerstyle instrument for players who prefer a little bit more low end than most OM instruments can offer. The 12 fret body design moves the bridge into a more central location on the top, giving you substantially more bass than on a similarly sized 14 fret body joint guitar. This guitar exhibits great warmth with deep rich lows and sparkling highs and upper mids. The sustain on this 000-60 is really exceptional. Fingerstyle pickers will find that the wider nut width of 1 13/16" will easily accommodate complex chordal playing. Additionally the sustain, richness and depth of the rosewood overtones are exactly what fingerstyle pickers are searching for.
This Larrivee 000-60 features a Sitka Spruce top. Sitka has a lower stiffness-to-weight ratio than Adirondack Red Spruce. A positive side-effect of this more flexible soundboard is that it doesn't require as much strength (or string attack) to produce it's signature balanced sonic tone. A player with a lighter attack or even fingerstyle players will find Sitka Spruce much more suited to their playing style. When paired with Rosewood, you get a guitar that is extremely well balanced with a lush, almost natural reverb quality. This guitar plays like a dream, is comfortable, and sounds like an old friend!
