2005 Martin D-18 Authentic 1937 Series Dreadnought Adirondack Spruce Hot Hide Glue Adirondack Bracing ID-5285
2005 Martin D-18 Authentic 1937 Series Dreadnought Adirondack Spruce Hot Hide Glue Adirondack Bracing
This special edition Martin D-18 acoustic guitar is Martin's loving recreation of the original 1937 guitar, now a highly sought-after collector's item. Crafted with mahogany back and sides, a solid Adirondack top with the X-brace and scalloped braces of the period, hide glue, vintage toner on top, ebony bridge with long saddle (2-5/16" string spacing), and a tortoise pickguard. The neck is also formed exactly as the original and reinforced with a traditional non-adjustable T-bar. Ebony fretboard (1-3/4" nut, 25.4" scale), small abalone position dots, fossil ivory nut and saddle, ebony bridge pins, 30's style hardshell case.
The tone is very large with booming basses... exactly what Martin is famous for! Lead lines are full and thick up and down the neck with a larger than life G chord, perfect for any Bluegrass jam. The authentic neck is quite a bit larger than the modern day standard and feels great, just like the vintage D-18s! The greater neck mass no doubt adds to the tone of this instrument.
The Adirondack Spruce top means that you can play this guitar quite hard before breakup, however, with hot hide glue construction, lightning fast response is gained and makes the Adirondack Top very easy to play. Hide Glue was the original glue used on the early Martin guitars but has been phased out by many luthiers due to the added time it takes to work with... not to mention it is very messy! Hot Hide glue sets up like glass, offering a more immediate and efficient transfer of energy throughout the top, making the overall guitar more responsive.
This guitar has a few marks on the headstock, as seen in the detail photographs. There are some small dents on the the top, which are pictured but are difficult to make out in the photograph because they are so small. There is some light finish scratches. Original hardshell case included.
