2006 Bourgeois Country Boy Deluxe Quilted Sapele and Adirondack Spruce

Dana Bourgeois is known around the world for his superb craftsmanship and also as one of the foremost authorities on the voicing, as well as the selection and utilization of fine tonewoods. As testimony to these great instruments, they have become a favorite of many professional country and bluegrass players, such as Ricky Skaggs, Cody Kilby, Bryan Sutton, Dailey and Vincent, and Sean Watkins. If there is one thing Dana Bourgeois knows, it’s building a knockout dreadnought. The feature immediately noticed on this special Bourgeois Country Boy is the highly figured quilted Sapele back and sides. Sapele is a large tree native to tropical Africa. Sapele is very similar to mahogany, in both density and the tone it produces. Due to the extremely gorgeous figuring, it is generally hard to come by in the US since it tends to be much more valuable as veneer and prices for the figured solid wood stocks are now very high.

The tone is dry and woody, with clarity and note definition that the best mahogany guitars offer. Like mahogany, Sapele provides a quick velocity of sound, relatively lightness of weight, and noticeable midrange overtone attenuation. We find this particular set of Sapele provides a balanced tone with a warmer high end than many mahogany guitars. Each note has commanding presence, yet is balanced and well represented. Chords ring with powerful, driving volume and lead notes are clear, punchy, and distinct.

This guitar was put into its case after it's purchase at the 2006 NAMM show and shows virtually no playing wear. There is a small dent under the strings in-between the soundhole and the bridge, pictured below. There is also a mark on the headstock that appears to be from a string change, visible in the detailed photographs. The original hardshell case is included.
