2007 Santa Cruz Tony Rice Dreadnought Sitka Spruce and Indian Rosewood

The Santa Cruz Tony Rice represents over 30 years of collaboration between the world's foremost flatpicking icon and SCGC's founding luthier, Richard Hoover. Richard asked if he could design Tony a custom instrument that would benefit his playing and tonal requirements, and there began a lifelong friendship in 1979.

Today's TR model incorporates decades of refinement in response to players' demands and the sophisticated evolution of the master's technique. The TR Model is voiced to showcase his stellar lead work with influences from Clarence White to John Coltrane. Tony's guitars delivers exactly what the contemporary flatpicking artist needs: substantial treble and midrange for rapid single-line lead, clean note separation for definition and the traditional bass boom without the woofy bottom end of some of the venerable Pre-war dreadnoughts.

This Tony Rice has a Sitka Spruce top, and has a bold, even tone. It also features aSanta Cruz Logo Inlay at the 12th fret. Sitka Spruce provides a rich, complex tone and is perfect for many players who play fingerstyle as well as flatpick. German Spruce is stiffer than Sitka, providing more headroom and power, yet more flexible than Adirondack so that it responds well to a lighter attack. This allows the guitar to be played fingerstyle while maintaining a high level of comfort, without sacrificing the invaluable headroom offered by a stiffer spruce.

This Santa Cruz Tony Rice D features a Sitka top paired with Indian Rosewood back and sides. Sitka Spruce is a top tonewood that is favorable for many players, as it is one of the most versatile tonewoods available. In regards to stiffness, Sitka is much more flexible than Adirondack, therefore exhibiting increased responsiveness and a richer low end when played at moderate levels. While not quite as powerful for the heaviest of pickers, Sitka lends itself quite nicely for fingerstyle playing as well, allowing you to cover much more musical playing styles than an Adirondack dreadnought will be capable of... not to mention that many players simply don't play hard enough to comfortably drive an Adirondack top. Sitka Spruce is in many ways the perfect compromise!

The Indian Rosewood brings the guitar balance and warmth, and when coupled with Sitka Spruce brings the guitar strong fundamentals, quick response, warm round trebles, and can be strummed or finger-picked with ease.

Additional appointments on this instrument include a herringbone top purfling and rosette, ivoroid body and fretboard bindings, nickel waverly tuners, Ebony fretboard with SCGC script logo at the 12th fret, Ebony peghead overlay and bridge.

This guitar is in excellent condition with only minor surface scratches on the top, back, peghead and sides as well as some finish checking on the upper bout near the neck as seen in the detailed photos below. It has no fretwear and includes the original hardshell case.
