Santa Cruz Tony Rice Professional Adirondack Spruce and Brazilian Rosewood

Tony Rice stands amongst the greatest guitar players ever, regardless of musical genre. He spans the range of acoustic music from Bluegrass to jazz and even singer songwriter folk. To be sure, he is likely the single greatest innovator of flat picked acoustic music since the legendary Clarence White rewrote the book for us all. Tony has enjoyed a long and fruitful musical career alongside of master players such as JD Crowe, Norman Blake, and David “Dawg” Grisman. He has virtually re-written the rules for acoustic music with such classic albums as Manzanita, Devlin, Blake and Rice, and Tone Poems. Never intended to be a copy of Tony's iconic 1934 D-28, the Santa Cruz Tony Rice Professional model represents over 30 years of collaboration between the legendary flatpicker and master Santa Cruz luthier, Richard Hoover. The Tony Rice model is voiced to showcase his stellar lead work with influences from Clarence White to John Coltrane and delivers exactly what the contemporary flatpicker needs: substantial treble and midrange for rapid lead lines, clean note separation for definition and the traditional bass boom without the woofy bottom end of some of the older Martins. According to Tony, most of his modern recordings are recorded using his Santa Cruz models.

This custom Tony Rice Professional Model has been further refined to offer similar specifications as used on Mr. Rice’s personal guitar, with some very special upgrades. Old growth quarter-sawn Brazilian Rosewood of the quality seen in the best vintage instruments and Adirondack Spruce chosen from master stock, are the materials of choice.

The gorgeous set of quarter-sawn Straight Grained Brazilian rosewood offers deep, growling lows while the Adirondack top provides a fast response with rich complex overtones.

The Santa Cruz string balance comes from Richard Hoover's masterful top voicing. Richard tap tunes each top to ensure it is voiced specially for that specific body cavity and this one is no exception... the guitar is voiced beautifully for maximum power and clarity while maintaining the famous Santa Cruz string balance up the entire neck.... it's easy to see why Tony prefers recording with these modern masterpieces.

This guitar also was built with the custom Adirondack Bracing and Hot Hide Glue option. This is a powerful combination equating to a dramatic increase in power and pure tone. Adirondack Braces are lighter and stiffer than Sitka, therefore they are more responsive and offer a more efficient transfer of energy through the top. When glued using Hot Hide Glue, that same effect is multiplied yet again... offering even greater resonation and power.

This guitar has been gorgeously appointed with Gold Santa Cruz tuners with butter-bean buttons and is finished off with Herringbone purfling, ivoroid bindings and Brazilian rosewood headstock overlay.

Additionally, To enhance the playability, a shorter (25.25 inch) scale and Tony’s slim neck profile provide fast and effortless action. The heirloom tone woods and intelligent design make this instrument the quintessential contemporary bluegrass dreadnought. In Tony’s own words, “This is a guitar you can go to war with.”
