Collings 03 Maple A with Torrefied Adirondack and Flame Maple Pre-Owned 2014 ID-11283
Collings 03 Maple A with Torrefied Adirondack and Flame Maple
With the exception of the Baby, the 0 is our smallest guitar and is offered with the same shorter scale found on the 12-fret 00. Although measuring only 13.5 inches in width (smaller than a typical classical guitar), the Collings 0 has tone and volume that belies its first impression as being less than full-sized. It can double as a travel guitar or a small OM, performing both roles equally well.
The same neck and wood options offered with larger Collings models are available on the 0 as well, giving players an almost infinite range of tonal possibilities. This particular Collings 03 is a special one for sure. It features not only a Torrefied Adirondack top, but also Torrefied Flame Maple back and sides.
The Adirondack Spruce as well as the Flamed Maple on this guitar has been treated with a process called Torrefaction. The commercial version of this process, known as, “thermo curing”, “wood torrefaction” or “roasting”, was developed in Finland and was originally used on flooring, building sidings, and outdoor furniture, where it enhanced stability, durability, and appearance. During this process the wood is heated in an oxygen-free environment at a relatively low temperature.
This process, reduces the oils, sugars, and resin content of the wood thus reducing mass and weight and increasing stiffness. As these elements are basically cooked off, whats left behind is cellulose and lignin--the “glue” that binds cellulosic fibers together. Once processed, mass and weight are reduced, absolute stiffness is increased and internal damping is decreased; stiffness-to-weight ratio and velocity of sound (the rate at which vibration transmits through solid material) are dramatically increased.
The result is a similar chemical transformation that naturally occurs in wood over decades of air drying. This produces similar characteristics we associate with the aged cell structure of vintage instruments, after the natural 'gassing off' of the cell lining over an extended period of time.
The custom appointments on this wonderful guitar are a 1 3/4" nut width, long diamond and square inlays, abalone rosette and gold Waverly tuners with snakewood buttons.
This instrument is in Excellent Condition with some light surface scratches through out the top, back, and sides as well as a few light finish scratches on the face of the headstock.
Includes Original Hardshell Case.
