Collings 360ST Electric Alder Tobacco Sunburst

An Alder Collings with 3 single coil pickups, a tremolo bar, and a 25 - 1/2" scale length? Don't change the channel! Yes, it's true, and we are proud to have one of the first Alder 360 ST's from our friends in Austin. We all know Bill Collings has been making some of the most highly regarded acoustic guitars in the world for quite some time, so when he decided to build electric guitars, musicians were chomping at the bit to see what would happen. The flawless construction, the incredible attention to detail, and the Collings quality are all here. With the newest addition to the line - the Collings 360ST - Collings has redesigned a classic guitar with players in mind and while it has an affordable price tag, the meticulous construction is nothing short of astonishing.

The 360 body shape resembles a Les Paul, but stretched in the lower bout. It also happens to be a bit thinner than a traditional Paul, which your shoulders and back will thank you for at the end of the last set on a long night. The two piece Alder body has an ergonomic angle cut into it, so it rests comfortably against your chest whether sitting or standing, very reminiscent of the Strat shape that it is roughly based on. The neck joins at the 16th fret on the bass side, however, the redesign of the angled neck joint allows the treble side to join at the 19th fret. This makes for an unencumbered visit to the higher frets an effortless process.

The knobs are traditional "top hat" type, but in typical Collings detail, the knobs are recessed into the body, giving an even greater sense of class. Underneath those knobs is 50's style wiring leading to 3 Jason Lollar Blackface Single Coil pickups and a traditional 5 way "blade" pickup selector. True to form, Collings has taken a different approach to the tone circuit on the 360ST, wiring it more like an original Tele circuit. What this means is that you have a "Master Tone" knob for the entire guitar! This is a wonderful addition for those of us used to traditional 3 pickup guitars, where you can only control 2 of the pickups - ever. In this case, no matter what pickup configuration you are in - you can control the overall tone of the instrument by the one knob. Additionally, in true Collings attention to detail, they have made their own "Bakelite" phenolic resin pickup covers, which gracefully arch out of the body and smoothly transition to the top of the pickup cover. This is the kind of small detail that set Collings apart from other builders in the world of custom builds. Yes, they will out source the pickups to one of the best in the business, however, they took matters into their hands and created some of the classiest upgraded pickup covers we have ever seen.

The Bridge is a new custom Gotoh tremolo, with 6 individual adjustable saddles, two point fulcrum system, and a "pop" in type Trem arm that screws in for the ultimate in stability. Once in place, the trem arm is very smooth in it's control over vibrato, Mr. Beck would enjoy getting to know this one! The Neck features a gorgeous flamed maple with a beautiful sunburst applies to it as well. The shape is a large "C" that will bring to mind a old Tele - it fills up the hand nicely.

Unplugged this guitar is resonant and lively, but plugging it in takes it to another level. The overall tone has a prominent midrange, clear treble and a full bass that has a defined piano like attack. The Blackface Single Coil pickups incorporate scatter wound wax potted coils with Alnico 5 magnets degaussed to typical vintage 60s strat pickup specs and a vintage style cloth covered lead wire. Think the ultimate "Strat" tone with the legendary playability and flawless construction that Collings is know for.

We have been waiting to see when Bill Collings would turn his merry eye towards traditional 25-1/2" guitars, to see what his take on them would be, as well as the subtle updates would be. We are supremely impressed and why wouldn't we be? The combination of appointments, tonal response, playability and build quality raise this head and shoulders above the pack.

We have included a recording of the new 360, played through one of Carr's latest designs - The Sportsman - a wonderfully versatile 6V6 based amplifier. Here are the settings from the amp (all based on clock face representation): Volume at 11, Treble at 11, Mid at 1, Bass at 7, Reverb at 7, Headroom at 1. You will first hear the instrument being played while rolling up and down the Volume, then rolling up and down the Tone knob. A short selection is then played on each pickup selection starting with the bridge pickup and moving forward through each position. 1.Bridge 2. Bridge and Middle(detent) 3. Middle 4. Middle and Neck(detent) 5. Neck
