Collings AT 17
One of the rarest and most labor intensive instruments in the Collings line up, Bill Collings' elaborately appointed 17" archtops represent the pinnacle of Collings craftsmanship. From the voluptuous curves to the seamless intersection of the neck and cutaway, every last detail sings quality. Only a handful of archtops of this size are built each year, we are very fortunate to have such a beautiful piece of Collings Guitars History.
This Guitar is uniquely special as an instrument & model that was very close to Bill Collings' heart. To this day Collings has no record of this instrument due to the fact that Bill would build them in his off time hours, this model was built and signed(on the inside in 1992) by Bill all by himself. Bill dated his signature in 1992 but the paper label is dated 1/93 which suggests that he completed the guitar for the Annual NAMM show that is held in Anaheim CA every year. Even though the demand for these instruments were very high, Bill would rarely sell these instruments to dealers, instead he would sell them to his friends in the industry, other guitar builders, or even the occasional artist that had made a good impression on him.
As Bill's involvement in his very well known hot rod shop got demanding, the production of these instruments slowed and then eventually ended, leaving the demand high with so little left in the market.
This Instrument was dutifully crafted with a Carved Italian Spruce Top, and Big Leaf Maple Back & Sides. Italian Spruce is light enough to vibrate freely yet strong enough to withstand the tension of steel strings. This helps give it a similar sonic quality to red spruce, it’s powerful, clear and vibrant. Italian Spruce is a perfect top for archtop guitar players who are looking for clarity in every note. Big Leaf Maple is tone wood that provides a powerful fundamental and even harmonics throughout, it is clear and present, but without pronounced peaks and valleys in the that can come through. It’s a great tone wood for strumming & finger picking without sacrificing clarity, and definition. The Ebony Fingerboard makes this guitar a complete treasure to play, and the action is so low it provides very little effort to make this one of a kind instrument sing!
